The order Microcoryphia, commonly known as bristletails, is considered as the most primitive one among living insects. Within this order, two species, Coreamachilis coreanus and C. songi (Machilidae: Machilinae), display the following contrasting reproductive strategies: parthenogenesis occurs in C. coreanus, whereas sexual reproduction is found in C. songi. Os arqueognatos são considerados o grupo irmão de todos os demais Hexapoda (Grimaldi & Engel 2005). São conhecidos como traças-saltadoras. Os nomes Archaeognatha e Zygentoma foram propostos como subordens de Thysanura. No mesmo ano, foi usado o nome Microcoryphia para Archaeognatha sensu Börner por Verhoeff (1904), que deu a esse táxon o status de Ordem. O mesmo foi classificado como subordem de Thysanura por Remington (1954) e como ordem por Ross (1965).
