Abstract:

We study the formation and spreading of a turbulent jet of bubbles in microgravity. This has been analyzed from the recordings obtained in previous experimental campaigns of microgravity. Results have been compared with a simplified model of passive bubbles, in which bubbles are advected by the mean flow and dispersed due to the local degree of turbulence at each point of the jet. Thanks to the expertise obtained with this part of the thesis, we have designed and built a new experiment that has been used 36 times in the 4.7 s drop tower of ZARM (“Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgra

Two-phase liquid-gas flow has a wide variety of applications in space, including active thermal control systems, high-power communications satellites, heat pumps and space nuclear reactors. Two-phase systems have many potential advantages over current single-phase systems due to reductions in system size, weight and power consumption. The mechanisms of pressure drop, heat transfer coefficients, void fractions, and flow regimes must be well understood under microgravity conditions in order to design reliable two-phase systems. Current commonly use viscosity measurement techniques cannot be used for all types of fluids. For fluids in the under cooled region a new method of measuring the viscosity is required. A process of viscosity measurement, by measuring the speed of droplet coalescence in a microgravity environment, was developed. This paper analyses validation experiments performed on the International Space Station. Four experiments were analyzed. Two of the experiments provided results consistent with the known value for the viscosity. One of the experiments did not provide sufficient data for a
