Twenty frescoes from “The Assumption” Cathedral located in the island town of Sviyazhsk (Tatarstan Republic, Russian Federation)—dated back to the times of Tsar Ivan IV “the Terrible”—were chemically analyzed in situ with a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometer. The investigation focused on identifying the pigments and their combinations in the paint recipes. One hundred ninety-three micropoints randomly chosen from the white, yellow, orange, pink, brown, red, grey, black, green, and blue areas were measured for major and minor elements. Abstract Statins, inhibitors of 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, are known to effectively reduce plasma cholesterol and reduce the mortality and morbidity of atherosclerotic disease. Recent investigation suggests that statins influence vascular biology through mechanisms other than decreased plasma cholesterol. Statins can inhibit the activation of the beta-2 integrin CD18 by inhibiting the signaling molecule RhoA and can block LFA-1 (an integrin that pairs CD11a with CD18 on lymphocytes) from binding its ligand ICAM-1. Abstract:
Hepatitis B is a life threatening infectious liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HBV among food vendors in Wurukum, a highly commercial section of metropolitan Makurdi in Benue State. The test was carried out with the use of an immunochromatographic micropoint HBsAg test strips and a HBsAg buffer screen for the virus. Out of the 250 non-vaccinated food vendors sampled, 27(10.8%) had HBV infection, with more in males (21.7%) than in females (6.6%). No significant difference (p>0.05) was found among age groups in spite of t
