Abstract:
The advent of microprocessors has created the possibility of developing low cost adaptive controllers for small process plants which in the past badly needed but could not afford such controllers. To examine the practicality of developing advanced low cost microprocessor based controller, this thesis describes the development of a non-linear adaptive controller for a nylon crimping plant which is a typical example of small process plants. In order to test the algorithm on site, an algorithm development/implement device basing on a novel multi-tasking concept was developed. This novel microproc

It is generally accepted that transient faults are a major cause of failure in micro processor systems. Industrial controllers with embedded microprocessors are particularly at risk from this type of failure because their working environments are prone to transient disturbances which can generate transient faults. In order to improve the reliability of processor systems for industrial applications within a limited budget, fault tolerant techniques for uniprocessors are implemented. These techniques aim to identify characteristics of processor operation which are attributed to erroneous behavio

Abstract:
A microprocessor control scheme for variable speed switched reluctance motor(SRM) drives is discussed. A particular implementation derived from first principles of the SRM is presented. The Intel 8088 microprocessor is used for the design implementation. It is shown that given the control requirements of the SRM like firing different phases according to rotor position and phase currents, a microprocessor controller is a good choice. The controller is economical since it uses standard TTL chips. The slow response at low speeds is also discussed. Experimental results performed on a static induct

The thesis describes a novel 4-quadrant DC-DC converter, supplied by a 28V DC voltage source, with an output voltage which may be continuously varied between +180V and -180V DC. A prototype 1.2kW DC-DC converter was designed and built, with emphasis given to the optimization of both the converter size and efficiency. This was achieved by means of a computer-based simulation study, which determined the optimal switching frequency and the size of the inductors and capacitors while maintaining a high unit efficiency. The control of motor speed is achieved by a completely digital technique, which does not require any analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog converters. Abstract:
The theory of soft variable structure control, which produces robustness to parameter variation and fast transient response, is discussed in this thesis. The digital implementation techniques are presented in the aspects of sample rate, prefilter design, hardware selection, and microprocessor arithmetic operation. Simulation and experimental results showed good performance in negative speed range, but this controller created unwanted high armature current fluctuation in positive speed range. The reasons turned out to be the limitation of sample rate, noise from the tachometer, and high gain

Abstract:
Many industrial and consumer devices rely on switch mode power converters (SMPCs) to provide a reliable, well regulated, DC power supply. A poorly performing power supply can potentially compromise the characteristic behaviour, efficiency, and operating range of the device. To ensure accurate regulation of the SMPC, optimal control of the power converter output is required. However, SMPC uncertainties such as component variations and load changes will affect the performance of the controller.
