Doll, Jason C. "A Windows application to compute back-calculations of fish body lengths using Visual Basic 6.0." Virtual Press, 2003. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1259749.

Full text
Abstract:
A windows based computer program to compute fish back-calculated lengths at age was created using Visual Basic 6.0© programming language. The objective of this project was to develop a computer program that is user-friendly and requires minimal user input to produce back-calculations. This program incorporates the familiar windows based graphical user interface and can compute up to 10,000 fish with a maximum age of 50 years. The input data can be imported from an Excel spreadsheet or manually entered directly to the program. Back-calculated lengths were computed using the traditional Lee method [ (L; = a + [ (L, - a) ( S; / Sc ) ]. Additional related statistical outputs are also included. The output data can be viewed using Excel where it can also be formatted for individual use. The program was compared with DisBcal using yellow perch age and length data. Results of the comparison were nearly identical with differences due to a rounding function of the output data.

Abstract:
Multi-tier enterprise systems consist of more than two distributed tiers. The design of multi-tier systems is considerably more involved than two tier systems. Not all systems should be designed as multi-tier, but if the decision to build a multi-tier system is made, there are benefits to this type of system design. CSCources is a system that tracks computer science course information. The requirements of this system indicate that it should be a multi-tier system. This system has three tiers, client, business and data. Microsoft tools are used such as Visual Basic (VB) that was used to build the client tier that physically resides on the client machine. VB is also used to create the business tier. This tier consists of the business layer and the data layer. The business layer contains most of the business logic for the system. The data layer communicates with the data tier. Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL) is used for the data store. The database containsseveral tables and stored procedures. The stored procedures are used to add, edit, update and delete records in the database. Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) is used to control modifications to the database. The transaction and security features available in the MTS environment are used. The business tier and data tier may or may not reside on the same physical computer or server. Active Server Pages (ASP) was built that accesses the business tier to retrieve the needed information for display on a web page. The cost of designing a distributed system, building a distributed system, upgrades to the system and error handling are examined.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

In the last few years there has been a proliferation of GPS receivers and receiver manufacturers. Couple this with a growing number of DoD test programs requiring high accuracy Time-Space-Position-Information (TSPI) with diminishing test support funds and/or needing a wide area, low altitude or surface tracking capability. The Air Force Development Test Center (AFDTC) recognized the growing requirements for using GPS in test programs and the need for a low cost, portable TSPI processing capability which sparked the development of the Desktop GPS Analyst. The Desktop GPS Analyst is a personal computer (PC) based software application for the generation of GPS-based TSPI.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates problems in hierarchical games. Mathematical models are used in tennis to determine when players should alter their effort in a game, set or match to optimize their available energy resources. By representing warfare, as a hierarchical scoring system, the results obtained in tennis are used to solve defence strategy problems. Forecasting in tennis is also considered in this thesis. A computer program is written in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), to estimate the probabilities of players winning for a match in progress. A Bayesian updating rule is formulated to update the initial estimates with the actual match statistics as the match is progressing. It is shown how the whole process can be implemented in real-time. The estimates would provide commentators and spectators with an objective view on who is likely to win the match. Forecasting in tennis has applications to gambling and it is demonstrated how mathematical models can assist both punters and bookmakers. Investigation is carried out on how the court surface affects a players performance. Results indicate that each player is best suited to a particular surface, and how a player performs on a surface is directly related to the court speed of the surfaces. Recursion formulas and generating functions are used for the modelling techniques. Backward recursion formulas are used to calculate conditional probabilities and mean lengths remaining with the associated variance for points within a game, games within a set and sets within a match. Forward recursion formulas are used to calculate the probabilities of reaching score lines for points within a game, games within a set and sets within a match. Generating functions are used to calculate the parameters of distributions of the number of points, games and sets in a match.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Sintering is an ever-growing area, which requires qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results that justify its effectiveness. This is explained because the results can fundament the decision-making process in sintering. Therefore, in this paper, a coded computer program is introduced to outline and speed up the analysis of the sintering process. This software was designed in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0®, which enables it to be installed on any Windows®-based device. If adequate values of input data are typed in and operating instructions are followed, the software can provide the following output data related to a flat cylinder: (a) initial density; (b) final density; (c) specific area variation; (d) shrinkage; and (e) densification. The developed software contributes to accelerating and standardizing the analysis of the sintering process, also serving as a baseline for future improvements.

The introductory (and only) C programming course at the freshmen’s year of Animation Engineering (AE) degree proved to be a challenge, despite 20 years of experience in teaching programming courses. Examples of data abstraction and understanding of control structures and expressions in the C programming language had to be brought closer to students who have shown interest in computer graphics and animation, and thus have chosen to pursue AE degree. Instead of a classical first program - “Hello world”, their first program should show a simple graphical object even it is just a single point. Specifically, students will programmatically control the execution of C program from a console window, whereas graphical window will be used as program’s output. We have chosen to use the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 integrated development environment (IDE) for this course as it is commonly used in our other C programming courses. Therefore, it had to be adapted to the needs and skills of the AE students. This was accomplished by enabling students to draw graphical objects on a simple 2D graphics canvas but without the need to possess any knowledge of computer graphics. For that purpose, several graphical libraries, including: openBGI, GDI, OpenGL and DirectX, were considered to accommodate the graphical component in the chosen IDE. They were compared according to ease of use, debugging support and documentation availability, from the perspective of absolute programming beginners. We have found that none of them are suitable for first time programmers. Because of this, we have implemented a lightweight wrapper graphical framework that abstracts and hides the underlying complexity of libraries used for drawing on a graphical canvas and window management. The framework offers clean design and ease of use. It provides only a small subset of 2D drawing and window management functions. All framework functions have a reduced number of parameters compared to their underlying counterparts as they set as many parameters as possible to predefined values. In addition, the names of functions are shorter than their counterparts. This way, students have to memorize less and can produce working code faster which should enhance their productivity. This framework, combined with compelling examples and assignments, should help students learn programming with ease.

Abstract:
Yarn quality is an essential concept, usually defined by the customers which demands simultaneous achievement of several requirements concerning the yarns characteristics. For the cotton type yarns, the tensile properties represent the most important parameters for assessment of yarn quality, because these features are key factors regarding the yarns behaviour in post-spinning operations (warping, weaving and knitting) and have a determinant contribution to the properties of final textile product. Hence, an accurate prediction of these characteristics is very important, from both technological and economic points of view. Providing the conditions for obtaining yarns with specified characteristics requires suitable selection of fibres used in blends, correct setting of the structure parameters of yarns and the processing conditions of the fibrous material, in close correlation with the yarn's end-use requirements, the manufacturing technology and the technical level of equipment. Finding an optimal variant of fibre blend involves considerable amounts of work, time and money. Therefore, the use of dedicated software for designing fibre blends may contribute to reduce these drawbacks and allows obtaining optimal blend recipes faster and more effective. The paper presents a software application developed primarily as a tool for teaching students the principles of rational design of fibre blends intended for cotton yarns with specified characteristics, but it can be also used by the spinning companies. The PFirB software is part of a package developed to support the teaching activities with the students from the Faculty of Textile-Leather and Industrial Management in Iasi, was created with Microsoft Visual Basic and Visual C++ and runs in a Windows environment.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the manufacture of textile products has become a highly competitive activity and the success across the global textile market depends on many factors. Higher productivity, increased flexibility, constant quality products and quick response to the market requirements are competitive advantages that companies can achieve by using IT instruments. Production of high quality yarns is based on an assembly of technological and mechanical factors that are closely correlated with the characteristics of processed raw material. Designing the manufacturing technology in spinning mills is an important stage within the complex process of yarn manufacturing. It aims at obtaining the spinning plan that ensures the coordination of the equipment's operating parameters and the correlation of its production capacities. Establishing the spinning plan parameters requires a large amount of work and assumes extended knowledge concerning the raw material characteristics, the spinning technology, the type and technical performances of the equipment, the level of yarns quality. Given the diversity and the large volume of data and calculations required to achieve the spinning plan, the efficiency of this activity may be increased by using specialized software designed for this purpose. This paper presents a software application used as a teaching instrument for technological design in spinning mills. The PFirLB software gathers all the information and provides the tools required to design the manufacturing technology in tow spinning mills. It is used for student training in order to teach them the skills for technological design, required by their future work as engineers in a spinning mill. The software was created with Microsoft Visual Basic and Visual C++ and runs in a Windows environment.

Abstract:
In spinning mills, the optimum correlation between the raw material properties, the yarn's characteristics and the manufacturing technology, is a key point for the production of good quality yarns. Beyond of its significant influence on the yarn characteristics, the raw material determines also the yarns' cost, representing up to 80% of it. Using the blending technique, in which fibres with different properties are combined in order to obtain mixture with average characteristics, it is possible valorising all types of fibres and producing yarns with desired characteristics. In this regard, the yarn designer has to choose the appropriate fibres and setting the right values for blend ratios, in order to obtain the best correlation between the fibres blend properties and the yarn characteristics. The paper presents a software application used as teaching tool for designing the fibre blends. The PFirL software gathers all the information and provides all the tools required for design of the fibre blends in wool spinning mill. It has a modular structure that includes independent procedures; these can be performed individually or in the logical order imposed by the algorithms underlying the program. The software is used to teach the students the principles of rational fibre blend design and to train them in accordance with the requirements of engineering profession. This tool enables the creation and verification of fibre blends in accordance with the yarns destination, mixture composition and manufacturing technology. It evaluates the spinnability of the designed blends and offers useful information for predicting their behaviour during processing, as well about the yarns' characteristics. The software was created with Microsoft Visual Basic and Visual C++ and runs in a Windows environment.

Abstract:
The increase in popularity of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) raises the issue of effective student feedback. Instructors can examine students' opinions and evaluations through multiple methods, such as eliciting them in feedback forms, or analyzing statistics that are automatically generated on the course platform about students' participation and achievements. While feedback forms can provide valuable information on students' learning experiences, including their interest and emotional reactions, they are vulnerable to low response rates and to various forms of recollection bias. For example, human memory privileges the final elements of an activity over its initial or middle periods (Kahneman 2010). Eliciting feedback on an entire activity also lacks the granularity required to determine what specific aspects were most and least interesting. While the analysis of automatically generated indicators compensates for the low response problem, it also fails to deliver finely-tuned information on student engagement with specific elements of the course. In order to address this issue, we have developed Expressio, an automatic student feedback solution based on affective computing. We start from Ekman's emotion classification, distinguishing six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger and disgust. We rely on several technologies and devices: Creative Senz3D Camera, Intel Perceptual Computing SDK, OpenCV, Windows API and Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. Expressio is a program that identifies user expressions as they occur during an online activity and displays them on the screen in a GUI. Our solution also affords training the program for a more accurate and personalized identification of emotions. Expressio can be integrated with a MOOC to allow the transmission of continuous feedback regarding student interest and emotional experiences during the course, based on automatic detection of facial emotional expressions.
