Abstract:
AbstractSince the mid-80s, new classes of superconductors have been discovered in which the origin of superconductivity cannot be attributed to the electron–ion interactions at the heart of conventional superconductivity. Most of these unconventional superconductors are strongly correlated electron systems, and identifying (or even more difficult, predicting) the precise superconducting state has been, and sometimes remains, an actual challenge. However, in most cases, it has been demonstrated that in these materials the spin state of the Cooper pairs is a singlet state, often associated with a ‘d-wave’ or ‘$$s +/-$$ s + / - ’ orbital state. For a few systems, a spin-triplet state is strongly suspected, like in superfluid $$^3$$ 3 He; this leads to a much more complex superconducting order parameter. This was long supposed to be the case for the d-electron system Sr$$_2$$ 2 RuO$$_4$$ 4 , and is very likely realized in some uranium-based (f-electron) ‘heavy fermions’ like UPt$$_3$$ 3 (with multiple superconducting phases) or UGe$$_2$$ 2 (with coexisting ferromagnetic order). Beyond the interest for these materials, p-wave superconductivity is presently quite fashionable for its topological properties and the prediction that it could host Majorana-like low energy excitations, seen as a route towards robust (topologically protected) qubits. The aim of these notes is to make students and experimentalists more familiar with the d-vector representation used to describe p-wave (spin triplet) superconductivity. The interest of this formalism will be illustrated on some systems where p-wave superconductivity is the prime suspect.

Abstract:
In this, study, an attempt is made to analyze the corticomuscular coupling of the brain and muscular system in the low-frequency components during ramp descent (RD) and stair descent (SD) locomotion. For this purpose, magnitude squared coherence (MSC) is computed from the simultaneous EEG and EMG signals recorded during the ramp and stair descent tasks. The MSC is extracted from the low- frequency bands such as delta (0.1–3 Hz) and theta bands (4–7 Hz). The study utilizes a publicly available database consisting of simultaneous recorded EEG, lower limb EMG and full body motion information from ten healthy subjects. The results show that there exists corticomuscular coupling between motor cortex (C1, C2 and Cz contacts) and tibialis anterior muscle activities during RD and SD. In addition, the MSC differs for both the tasks and frequency bands. In delta band frequencies, the MSC is found to be higher in C2 regions. In the case of theta, the MSC is higher in C1 during RD and in Cz during SD. Therefore, the MSC associated with the low frequency components could be used to detect walking intentions.

Abstract:
This chapter reports on the evaluation of Clever Health, an Australian e-health project. The evaluation took place from mid-2007 through 2010 and consisted of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to capture awareness, expectations, and use of Clever Health components—which included video-conferencing for patient care, professional development, and peer support—and to compare initial perceptions and expectations to perceived changes in awareness and uptake of Clever Health components. The study found that while use of components increased at a satisfactory pace, health services and professionals struggled with change management issues, which, in turn, impacted changing work practices. Findings suggest that it is imperative to address and integrate the human factors of e-health delivery in the rollout of future e-health programs. The study proposes a robust evaluation framework for future telemedicine projects that uses a patient-centred unit of analysis and examines the costs and benefits that accrue for different stakeholders.

The aim of this paper is to propose an automated coding system to assist physicians in the assignment of ICD codes to EHR. For this purpose, we created a pipeline of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Deep Learning (DL) models able to extract the useful information from French medical texts and to perform classification. Personal and public involvement in healthcare provision has become an essential part of the governance framework of the National Health Service (NHS) today. Patient safety, quality, and responsiveness of care are the main priorities of national healthcare providers. Yet in practice, there are significant limitations to the introduction of a true patient- or person-centred approach, which will be described in this chapter. Two case studies have been included to illustrate the challenges to implementing a true person-centred approach in the NHS. The first relates to the Mid-Staffordshire Hospital Trust where hundreds of patients died as a result of sub-standard levels of care. The second focuses on a family's struggle to access a joined-up package of care for a Parkinson's disease sufferer in a primary care setting.

The decades immediately before the Great Famine witnessed a significant shift in the civil role of the parish vestry in Ireland and a related transformation in how communities managed beggary in their locality. Parochial officials included officers of health, whose responsibilities included the removal of iterant beggars from local thoroughfares for the purpose of mitigating the spread of epidemic disease.

Chapter 3 introduces many of the topics of the book by tracing the evolution of UN system budgeting from the mid-nineteenth-century international unions, several of which are predecessor organizations of today’s UN specialized agencies, through the interwar League of Nations to the main geopolitical changes after World War II. This historical perspective demonstrates the continuity in some of the budgeting dynamics throughout more than a century. It shows how principal and agency complexity in the UN are based on early design decisions in the League of Nations. It highlights how voluntary funding of the League of Nation’s Health Organization looked similar to today’s financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, suggesting that principal complexity has always included actors beyond states. And the chapter explores how the complexity of the IO bureaucracy responsible for managing money and discord evolved from small, host-state supervised bureaucratic units to today’s major administrative operations.
