The principle aim of this study was to isolate a chemical for the "safe anaesthesia" of abalone under commercial farming conditions. "Safe anaesthesia" implied that the anaesthetic had no immediate detrimental or long term sublethal effect on the abalone, that it was safe for the farmer, the consumer and the environment. Four chemicals, magnesium sulphate (MgS0₄), ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), 2-phenoxyethanol and procaine hydrochloride were shown to effectively inhibit the in vitro contraction of isolated tarsal muscle of Haliotis midae. I compared various MIDAS (mixed data sampling) regression models to predict volatility from one week to one month with different regressors based on the records of Chinese Shanghai composite index. The main regressors are in 2 types, one is the realized power (involving 5-min absolute returns), the other is the quadratic variation, computed by squared returns. The inclusion of soya as a dietary protein source in the formulated feed, Abfeed® S34 (Marifeed Pty (Ltd), Hermanus) for farmed abalone, Haliotis midae has resulted in larger gonads during reproductive seasons compared to the gonads of abalone fed kelp or diets that included fishmeal as the only main protein source. This is mainly because in many cases, the replacement of the boronic acid for the respective MIDA boronate has a positive result in the reaction yield. We forecast US GDP sampled quarterly over horizons ranging from one quarter to three years. Using AR-MIDAS models we study three lag polynomials: the Almon lag, the exponential Almon lag and the beta lag, and nine macroeconomic variables, sampled weekly or monthly. Our benchmark model is an AR(1) and we compare forecast errors using RMSE. In all instances the AR-MIDAS achieves lower forecast errors compared to the benchmark model. The predictor sampled weekly generally performs better compared to other predictors, which are sampled monthly.
