The discourse of the Bible plays a prominent role in shaping the narrative of Russian literature in the Middle Eastern context during the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This paper focuses on the Biblical discourse being formed within the Middle Eastern prose of S. S. Kondurushkin from the 1900s to the early 1910s. It is the time spent by the writer in the Middle East that motivated him to capture the essence of daily life in the region through a series of stories published in “Russkoe Bogatstvo” magazine. One of the most famous works of aljamiado literature (literature in Spanish in Arabic script) is the Poem of Yusuf (“Poema de Yúçuf” in Spanish). The poem was written by an anonymous Morisco poet at the end of the XIII – the beginning of the XIV centuries. The poem is based on the most common plot among the Moriscos – the twelfth sūrah of the Qur'an. The challenge to classicists to read Josephus ‘as literature’ is an awkward one, because it throws into relief the crooked, appropriative practices we undertake in the name of literary criticism.
