Abstract:
Although school-sponsored extracurricular sport remains one of the most popular and effective ways to increase adolescents' physical activity levels, it is designed to include a small number of a school's elite athletes. Fewer schools offer intramural sports, and little is known about participation in these activities. The purpose of this study is to compare variations in how students participate in interscholastic and intramural school sport programs. Using a sample of seventh and eighth graders in two southeastern middle schools, results indicated that school sport participation levels were higher in intramurals than interscholastic sports for all studied categories of students except for White girls. In addition, students participating in intramural sports played nearly twice as many sports during the school year as students participating in interscholastic sports. Gender and race differences in school sport participation both confirm and contradict previous research and suggest that schools should consider cultural factors when planning sport programs for diverse populations of young people.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the determinants for adolescent participation in sports and to determine the impact of an alternate model of sport delivery (i.e., school intramural sports). More specifically, this study used the theory of planned behavior to highlight factors that might contribute to young people's decisions to play sports and to determine what impact an alternate model of sport delivery would have on intention to participate in sport. Three hundred and three students in grades seven and eight completed measures of their participation in intramural and extramural sports and items related to the theory of planned behavior. In addition to results that showed a relatively large number of students participating in school intramural sports, notable differences in the relative contributions of the predictor variables of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were found across different sport-participation subgroups. Suggestions for future research are made in the context of the limitations of the study.

Abstract:
Background:This study’s purpose was to assess the opportunities for North Carolina adolescents to be physically active in extracurricular middle school environments and to compare opportunities across community types. Methods:Data were analyzed based on the results of an electronic questionnaire distributed to a sample of 431 schools with a response rate of 75.4% (N = 325).Results:Nearly all schools offered interscholastic sports while fewer than half offered intramurals or noncompetitive activities to students. “Open gym” was offered at only 35% of schools, while 24% of schools offered extracurricular activities to students with disabilities. Overall, 43.4% of schools offered special transportation to students who participated in some extracurricular physical activities. Schools in rural areas generally offered fewer programs and had fewer supports than schools located in more urbanized areas. Over two-thirds of rural schools offered no extracurricular programs other than interscholastic sports. Conclusions:Schools can be important settings for physical activity. North Carolina’s middle schools and its rural schools in particular, are falling short in efforts to provide extracurricular physical activity programming recommended by researchers and policy groups.1−6 Lower accessibility to extracurricular physical activities may partially contribute to higher levels of physical inactivity found in the state.

Abstract:
Improving preparticipation screening of candidates for sports necessitates establishing the prevalence of high-risk cardiovascular conditions (hr-CVC) that predispose young people to sudden cardiac death (SCD). Our accurate, novel protocol chiefly involved the use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) to estimate this prevalence. Middle and high school students from a general United States population were screened by means of questionnaires, resting electrocardiograms, and CMR to determine the prevalence of 3 types of hr-CVC: electrocardiographic abnormalities, cardiomyopathies, and anomalous coronary artery origin from the opposite sinus with intramural coronary course (ACAOS-IM). We examined the range of normal left ventricular size and function in the main study cohort (schoolchildren 11–14 yr old). We defined diagnostic criteria for hr-CVC and compared the cardiac measurements of these younger participants with those of older children whom we examined (age, 15–18 yr). From 5,169 completed diagnostic studies (mean participant age, 13.06 ± 1.78 yr), CMR results revealed 76 previously undiagnosed cases of hr-CVC (1.47% of the total cohort): 11 of dilated cardiomyopathy (14.5%), 3 of nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (3.9%), 23 ACAOS-IM cases (30.3%; 6 left-ACAOS and 17 right-ACAOS), 4 Wolff-Parkinson-White patterns (5.3%), 34 prolonged QT intervals (44.7%), and 1 Brugada pattern (1.3%). Cardiomyopathies were significantly more prevalent in the older children. Of note, we identified 959 cases (18.5%) of left ventricular noncompaction. If our estimate is accurate, only 1.47% of school-age sports participants will need focused secondary evaluations; the rest can probably be reassured about their cardiac health after one 30-minute screening study.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of participation in school sports teams of students studying in middle school on their levels of school engagement. The relational screening model was used in the study. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 610 students selected by the random sampling method and studying at middle school level (fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades). For analysis of the data obtained from the participants by means of the ‘School Engagement Scale’, descriptive statistics were calculated and interpreted with independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Based on the research findings, the mean level of school engagement of the participants was found to be 3.62 ± 0.51. In terms of the gender variable, a significant difference in favour of female participants was found. With respect to another variable, that of state of participation in school teams, it was determined that as length of participation in school teams increased, mean level of school engagement of the participants also increased. In conclusion, it was determined that participation in school teams made a positive contribution to students’ engagement in school, and it is recommended that in order to further increase students’ level of school engagement, measures should be taken to ensure students’ participation in school teams.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify potential recreational activity interests of Hopkins County middle school students, thereby assisting the Hopkins County Family YMCA in teen program development. In addition, the study investigates potential constraints these students encounter. One hundred and twenty-five students from four public middle schools participated in the recreation needs assessment. The recreation needs assessment instrument consisted of five activity categories (arts and crafts activities; dance, drama, and music activities; literary activities; nature activities; and sports and games). Category activity selections were limited to those activities the Hopkins County Family YMCA was willing and/or capable of offering considering current human, facility, and fiscal resources. Overall, the adolescent's selected photography, basketball, and modern dance lessons as the top three recreational activities. The assessment's findings also indicated the number one reason for nonparticipation in after school or weekend recreation activities is "I'm too busy to participate" regardless of gender.

Abstract:
The place of sports in academic institutions has been analyzed at length for several years. However most studies focus on the participation of high school and university students in school sports. Very little research exists to suggest a positive or negative correlation between academic achievement and participation in interscholastic sports at the elementary level. As a result the relationship between academic performance and participation in school sports among elementary students in grades 4 and 5 was investigated in this study. Through an independent-samples t test analysis of 1,605 fourth and fifth grade boys and girls, it was determined that students who participated in school sports were likely to have higher standardized test scores in both reading and math as measured by the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program. This was true of both male and female students. Additionally students of African-American, Asian, and Latino ethnicity who participated in interscholastic athletics also performed significantly higher on standardized tests than did their peers who did not participate in school sports. However it was determined that no significant relationship existed between participation in school sports and attendance at the elementary level. The results of this study suggest that there exists a positive relationship between interscholastic sports participation and academic achievement.

Abstract:
In the current study, the relation of the frequency of sport participation and gender to CRF, muscular strength and flexibility, body composition, physical activity self-efficacy, and physical self-concept in a sample of 629 sixth graders were examined. Because both physical activity and sport participation have been related to similar outcomes, activity through physical education was controlled by including only 6th graders who were part of a required school class. MANCOVA analyses demonstrated that sport involvement was significantly related to improvements in physical fitness (i.e., CRF and muscular strength), physical activity self-efficacy, and physical self-concept (CRF and muscular strength). The interaction between sport involvement and gender was not significant, suggesting these relationships existed equally for the boys and girls.

碩士
國立臺灣體育運動大學
休閒運動管理研究所
105
The purpose of this study is from the perspective of institutions to find the reason of low sports participation of Taiwanese students, through related theories explain. First, we used Historical Analysis and Documentary Analysis, and the theory of “New institutionalism” is most illustrative for this study. Then we conducted investigation and analyzed questionnaires from middle high school students of Taichung city. The result showed 1) The variable of formal institution “Academic pressure” had no significant correlation in students’ sports participation; there was no significant pressure increase in school work and parental expectation of academic achievement. 2) The variable of informal institution “National character” had no significant correlation in students’ sports participation; students didn’t force themselves to do something reluctantly, so students’ personality is closer to Individualism instead of Collectivism. 3) Practical feature “National character” had a significant correlation in students’ sports participation; sports celebrity idolatry had great influence in students’ sports participation. In summary, the government’s education policy has influence on student’s academic pressure, and can increase students’ sports participation by positive perspectives, like increasing the times of sports games and professionalism in sports.

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺東大學
健康促進與休閒管理碩士在職專班
97
The purpose of this research is to understand the considerations and the obstructive for sponsoring sports camps for elementary school and middle school students. In the research, the research subject was the sponsors of sports camps for elementary schools and middle schools in Taiwan area (excluding Kinmen County and Lienchiang County), and the Stratified Random Sampling method was utilized. 400 schools were drawn out for surveying; there were a total of 800 surveys sent out. A total of 579 surveys were returned from 329 schools. After statistical analysis and discussion, the survey was concluded as follows: 1. More than 80% of the elementary schools and middle schools hold their own sports camps, and those sports camps mostly are held during summer and winter vacations. Mostly, there is only one sport and one team to participate in each camp. Ball games are most popular, and a camp mostly is held for 3 to 4 hours a day for 5 days. Participants pay the fee. 2. Senior sponsors are mostly like to witness more decision-making factors than younger sponsors, especially for those who are more experienced in teaching, teachers at the bigger schools, more experienced in sponsoring activities and graduates of sports related academies, and they usually think comprehensively. They tend to consider “supports from administration” the most and “activity expenses” the least among those decision-making factors. 3. Sponsors at smaller schools are most likely to witness constraint factors more than those whom are at the bigger schools. Sponsors with no experience tend to encounter more constraints. They tend to consider “Activity Resource” the most and “field and equipments resources” the least among those constraint factors. 4. In conclusion, “supports from administration” is the most witnessed among decision-making factors, and “activity resource,” “administrative resource,” “personal cognition,” “quality of students,” and “funding resource” are the least among constraint factors.

However, in the case of the author, I have never seen someone in my colleague actually introduce the innovative teaching mode into the first-line teaching scene. In order to complete my research papers during the training, Try to introduce the sports education model to observe in your own class, I hope that the experience gained will be recorded and shared with the educational practitioners who are willing to try. The purpose of this study is to study the impact of the introduction of the "sports education model" into the physical education curriculum on the learning motivation and learning performance of middle school students. The research object is the middle school teachers and students in the Tainan area. a total of 6 people, Divided into 2 teachers and 4 students. The research results are as follows: 1. The "study willingness and learning achievement" of the physical education students in the "sports education mode" is significantly higher than that of the students in the traditional teaching mode. 2. Teachers who are exposed to the “Sports Education Model” are highly affirmed by this innovative teaching and will continue to expand into other classes and courses in the future.
