Abstract:
This paper describes a dataset of polychaetes (Annelida) from 14 midlittoral rocky shore sampling sites in Greece and Italy (Mediterranean Sea). The dataset combines the outcome of four different projects studying the hard substrate midlittoral zone in the Mediterranean between 1984 and 2009. Samples were collected by scraping and collecting the organisms from a framed area. The maximal sampling depth was 1.5 m. In total, 123 polychaete species were recorded, five of which are new records for the respective biogeographic sectors of the Mediterranean. The dataset contains 788 occurrence records

The seasonal variations of growth in Chondrus crispus Stackhouse were studied by using a vital, fluorescent, cell-wall stain called Cellufluor. In situ growth is not only apical but is extended at least to the upper half of the thallus; it is slow at the beginning of spring, increases towards the end, slows down at the beginning of summer, and increases again to reach a maximum in autumn. It is minimal during winter. The same pattern of growth occurs for the two dissimilar studied forms of the alga, although the rate is greater in the infralittoral than in the midlittoral form.

Abstract:
AbstractThe calcified red macroalga Lithophyllum byssoides, a very common midlittoral species in the western Mediterranean Sea, is a significant ecosystem engineer capable, under exposed and dim light conditions, of building wide and solid endemic bioconstructions near the mean sea level: the L. byssoides rims or 'trottoirs à L. byssoides'. Although the growth of the species is relatively rapid for a calcified alga, the construction of a large rim requires several centuries of near stable or slowly rising sea level. As the time scale of their formation is measured in centuries, L. byssoides bi

Abstract Marine caves, often overlooked hotspots of biodiversity, provide unique habitats for specialized species. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Rosh HaNiqra is a midlittoral cave renowned for its vibrant epilithic algal community. In the study reported here, we explored the light environment, algal composition, and ecological dynamics of the Rosh HaNiqra cave. Light measurements revealed that illumination in the cave ranged from 0.5 to 2.5% of the sunlight recorded at the mouth of the cave, with variations across seasons and times of day, peaking during summer, and an increase in red wa

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Patella ferruginea, an endemic marine mollusc of the western Mediterranean, faces a severe threat due to historical overexploitation, habitat loss and habitat vulnerability. This specie forms reproductive populations on sheltered dikes within Alboran Sea ports, presenting a persistent management challenge. Investigating both recruitment rates and preferences in artificial habitats, as well as early life stages, is crucial for its conservation. Three experiments, focusing on recruits under 25 mm, were conducted, with two exclusively in Ceuta's port in the Strait of Gibraltar. The first
