Abstract I picked up once off a book barrow in Berne a mid-nineteenth-century brochure, which was a set of lectures given by a von Stein about the theatrical relations of Schiller to Goethe. I have an idea that the lecturer was the son (or grandson?) of Goethe’s Frau von Stein, but I have lost the brochure and cannot be certain. Abstract:
The origins of Sosostris in Tippett’s opera The Midsummer Marriage (1946–52) are traced back to a passage in Aldous Huxley’s Crome Yellow (1921) in which a character disguised himself as ‘Madame Sesostris, Sorceress of Ecabatana’.
