Credentialism, exploitation and de-networking are important concepts that characterise the vulnerability of socially excluded migrants. Abstract:
In the wake of financial crisis the UK Coalition government has emphasised an ‘enterprise for all’ agenda for economic growth that, paradoxically, marginalises migrant entrepreneurs within an ‘immigrant reduction’ agenda. While migrant entrepreneurs may be written off as ‘failing’ within economic theory and policy, my research shows instead that the value of migrant enterprise is far from marginal. Focusing on Ghanaian and Polish migrant enterprise within and through London, I recentre our understanding away from the spatially partial (trans)national frameworks used in previous studies, toward

Fung, Daisy. "Migrant narratives, chronicity and HIV in London." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16227.

Abstract:
This thesis explores chronicity amongst a small group of migrants living with HIV and other illnesses in London. It elucidates their engagements and experiences with self-care, particularly in light of tenuous citizenship. Drawing on field work in London from 2010-2011 with support groups for persons with HIV, largely made up of refugees and asylum seekers, I look at how social vulnerability and frustrations of claims to citizenship are crucial factors in creating conditions for doubt – reservations that centre less on living normally with chronic illness, than living and pursuing a life.
