Abstract:
Cell migration is of crucial importance for many physiological processes, including embryonic development, wound healing and immune response. Defects in cell migration are the cause of chronic in ammatory diseases, mental retardation and cancer metastasis. Cell movement is driven by actin-mediated cell protrusion, substrate adhesion and contraction of the cell body. The emergent behaviour of the intracellular processes described above is a change in the morphology of the cell. This inspires the main hypothesis of this work which is that there is a measurable relationship between cell morpholog

Abstract:
The Siple Coast ice streams are long, narrow bands of ice within the Antarctic ice sheet. They move significantly faster than the surrounding ice ridges, and therefore discharge significantly more ice. Observations suggest that their fast flow is due to sliding along a water-saturated bed, while the bed of the neighbouring ridges generally appears to be frozen. The ice stream velocities and widths vary on decadal to centennial time scales, and these variations include the migration of the ice stream margins, where the fast flow slows down to the speed of the surrounding ice. In this thesis a new method is proposed to estimate major periods of migration from one region into another using phased, non-recombined sequence data from the present. It is first shown through appropriate simulations based on the structured coalescent that previous inferences based on the idea of founder sequences sufer from the fundamental problem that it is assumed that migration events coincide with the nodes

Collective cell migration is a fundamental process, occurring during embryogenesis and cancer metastasis. Neural crest cells exhibit such coordinated migration, where aberrant motion can lead to fatality or dysfunction of the embryo. Abstract:
Migratory species undertake prolonged seasonal journeys; monitoring these movements is challenging but can sometimes be achieved by observations that taken locally and, ideally, using remote methods. Amongst the best known examples of migrating fish in Europe, are Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) that migrate between river and seawater. Characteristics of habitat suitability, feeding opportunities, predation, as well as salmonid sensitivity and needs, vary throughout successive stages of their anadromous life cycle. Since the marine stage is the longest but is also ch

Abstract:
There are a large number of unlined and historical landfill sites across Britain, contaminating groundwater and soil resources as well as posing a threat to human health and local communities. There is an essential requirement for robust methodology when carrying out risk-based site investigations prior to risk assessment and remediation of landfill sites. This research has focused upon the methods used during site investigations for two reasons. Firstly, the site investigation is often conducted using field instruments and methods that do not account for the heterogeneous conditions found at

Abstract:
This thesis presents a mathematical model of the nanoporous anode within a dyesensitised solar cell (DSC). The main purpose of this work is to investigate interfacial charge transfer and charge transport within the porous anode of the DSC under both illuminated and non-illuminated conditions. Within the porous anode we consider many of the charge transfer reactions associated with the electrolyte species, adsorbed dye molecules and semiconductor electrons at the semiconductor-dye- electrolyte interface. Each reaction at this interface is modelled explicitly via an electrochemical equation, res
