Abstract:
The Guianas are an important migratory field in the Caribbean migratory system, whereby goods, objects, currencies, and populations circulate for different reasons: geographical, cultural proximity, climatic, geopolitical and socioeconomic factors. From the 1960s and 1970s, Haitian migration increased in the Guianas. Five decades later, after the January 2010 earthquake, the migratory spaces were intensified in the region, Brazil became part of them as a country of residence and transit to reach French Guiana and Suriname. In 2013, the routes were altered. Some migrants started to use the Republic of Guyana to enter Brazil through the border with Roraima, in the Amazon, or to cross the border towards Suriname and French Guiana. This article is divided into two levels. First, it describes the way in which migrants' practices and trajectories intersect national borders in the Guianas. Then, it analyzes the migratory system, documents and papers, and the problems that the different Haitian migratory generations raise in space and time. The ethnographic research is based on the Triple Border Brazil, Colombia and Peru, but also in Suriname, French Guiana and Haiti.

Abstract:
The multiple events at the transition from non–craniate invertebrate ancestors to craniates included the gain and/or elaboration of migratory neural crest and neurogenic placodes. These tissues give rise to the peripherally located, bipolar neurons of all non–visual sensory systems. The brain was also elaborated at or about this same time. Were the peripheral and central events simultaneous or sequential? A serial transformation hypothesis postulates that paired eyes and an enlarged brain evolved before the elaboration of migratory neural crest–placodal sensory systems. Circumstantial evidence for this scenario is derived from the independent occurrence of the combination of large, paired eyes plus a large, elaborated brain in at least three taxa (cephalochordates, arthropods and craniates) and partly from the exclusivity of the diencephalon for visual system–related distal sensory components versus the restricted distribution of migratory neural crest–placodal sensory systems to the remaining parts of the neuraxis. This scenario accounts for the similarity of all central sensory system pathways due to the primary establishment of descending visual pathways via the diencephalon and midbrain tectum to brainstem motor regions and the subsequent exploitation of the same central beachhead by the migratory neural crest–placodal systems as a template for their organization.

Abstract:
The task of combining evolutionary migration models with stochastic utility theory is undertaken in a series of three interrelated papers. The present, first, paper deals with the evolution of migratory systems and its dynamics are drawn mainly from work by Haag and Weidlich. A migratory system is defined and then the foundations upon which the evolution of such a system is based are described, including an approximation due to Kurtz which allows the most probable state of the evolutionary model to be represented as a dynamical system. This paper closes with a discussion of disequilibrium, which is central in this series. Disequilibrium is related to the concept of a steady state, the existence of which is established for nonlinear migratory systems of the type discussed here.

Abstract:
Over 450 dams have been constructed in the upper Paraná River basin in Brazil during the past 40 years. River regulation by these dams is considered a primary factor in the reduction of fish diversity and depletion of migratory species. In contrast to the upper Paraná Basin, only two large dams (both with upstream fish passage) have been constructed in the lower La Plata River basin. Fishery managers in the lower basin are concerned that existing and planned dams will further deplete populations of migratory fish species that constitute important recreational and commercial fisheries as has occurred in the upper basin. We assessed the sustainability of fisheries in the lower basin in the face of increased river regulation by using literature information to describe the efficiency of the fish passage systems used to mitigate river regulation impacts on fisheries. Our analysis shows that fish passage systems at both lower basin dams, Yacyreta and Salto Grande, fail to transfer sufficient numbers of upstream migrants to sustain populations of migratory species. Fish passage efficiency of target species in the fish elevators at Yacyreta is less than 2%. Fish diversity in the fish elevators is low because about 85% of the fish belong to only three non-migratory species (Pimelodus maculatus, Oxydoras kneri and Rhinodoras dorbignyi). Large migratory species targeted for passage rarely comprise even 5 % of the fish number in the passage system. The two Borland locks at Salto Grande Dam cannot dependably pass large numbers of migratory species because passage efficiency is dependent upon interactions of powerhouse and spillway operation with tailrace elevations. Most species in the Borland system were either a small catfish (Parapimelodus valenciennis) or a engraulid (Lycengraulis grossidens). Again, the targeted migratory species were not abundant in the passage system. We conclude that existing fish passage technology in the lower basin is inadequate and that improved fish passage designs are required to conserve migratory species. These designs must be based on integrated information from geomorphology (habitat), natural fish behavior, fish swimming capabilities, and detailed population studies.

Abstract:
Recent increases in human disturbance pose significant threats to migratory species using collective movement strategies. Key threats to migrants may differ depending on behavioural traits (e.g. collective navigation), taxonomy and the environmental system (i.e. freshwater, marine or terrestrial) associated with migration. We quantitatively assess how collective navigation, taxonomic membership and environmental system impact species' vulnerability by (i) evaluating population change in migratory and non-migratory bird, mammal and fish species using the Living Planet Database (LPD), (ii) analysing the role of collective navigation and environmental system on migrant extinction risk using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifications and (iii) compiling literature on geographical range change of migratory species. Likelihood of population decrease differed by taxonomic group: migratory birds were more likely to experience annual declines than non-migrants, while mammals displayed the opposite pattern. Within migratory species in IUCN, we observed that collective navigation and environmental system were important predictors of extinction risk for fishes and birds, but not for mammals, which had overall higher extinction risk than other taxa. We found high phylogenetic relatedness among collectively navigating species, which could have obscured its importance in determining extinction risk. Overall, outputs from these analyses can help guide strategic interventions to conserve the most vulnerable migrations. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Collective movement ecology'.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the mid-20th century, the Chilean City system has diversified, increasing its presence in intermediate cities, while its migratory flows have become more complex. Despite its continued demographic importance, Santiago has registered net emigration over the past 15 years, partly as a result of suburbanization, and partly as a result of the effective reorientation of migratory flows towards cities located some distance away. The qualitative effects of inter-city migration include the erosion of the basis of human resources of those undergoing a prolonged economic crisis. This emerging migratory scenario requires new theoretical approaches.

Abstract:
Knowledge about migratory connectivity, the degree to which individuals from the same breeding site migrate to the same wintering site, is essential to understand processes affecting populations of migrants throughout the annual cycle. Here, we study the migration system of a long-distance migratory bird, the Montagu's harrier Circus pygargus , by tracking individuals from different breeding populations throughout northern Europe. We identified three main migration routes towards wintering areas in sub-Saharan Africa. Wintering areas and migration routes of different breeding populations overlapped, a pattern best described by ‘weak (diffuse) connectivity’. Migratory performance, i.e. timing, duration, distance and speed of migration, was surprisingly similar for the three routes despite differences in habitat characteristics. This study provides, to our knowledge, a first comprehensive overview of the migration system of a Palaearctic-African long-distance migrant. We emphasize the importance of spatial scale (e.g. distances between breeding populations) in defining patterns of connectivity and suggest that knowledge about fundamental aspects determining distribution patterns, such as the among-individual variation in mean migration directions, is required to ultimately understand migratory connectivity. Furthermore, we stress that for conservation purposes it is pivotal to consider wintering areas as well as migration routes and in particular stopover sites.

Abstract:
Root-knot and cyst nematodes have sophisticated mechanisms to invade their plant hosts to reprogram the plant developmental program to induce feeding structures essential for nematode survival and reproduction. This has a detrimental effect on the plant as this sedentary endoparasitic interaction affects the growth and yields of many crop plants. However, other migratory endoparasitic nematodes that do not establish root feeding sites are as aggressive on many crop plants. With new information gained from the genome and transcriptomes of the migratory endoparasitic nematode, Pratylenchus spp., this review compares the different lifestyles and the pathogenic interactions these nematodes have with their plant host. Pratylenchus spp. utilises a common arsenal of effectors involved in plant cell wall degradation and the manipulation of plant host innate immunity. The absence of specific cell reprogramming effector genes may explain its migratory endoparasitic lifestyle, making it relevant to pest management approaches in Australia.

Bhala, Maclean J. "Non-migratory antiozonant system for natural rubber." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1997. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12428.

Full text
Abstract:
The current research on non-migratory antiozonant systems for natural rubber follows a tripartite study involving the formulation of a coating compound with static and dynamic ozone testing of the coatings, a review of some commercial in-mould coating techniques and analysis of diffusion of a commercial antiozonant through a coating. An outline of the mixing of Nipol 1312, a low molecular weight nitrile butadiene rubber grade produced by leon Chemicals Inc., with other ingredients to produce a coating composition is also given. Test pieces of the natural rubber substrate were placed in pre-coated mould cavities and cured under compression to achieve covulcanisation between the substrate and the coating. All ozone tests were carried out under standard ASTM DI149-911D518-91 conditions. Results show that the formulated nitrile rubber coating compound is able to protect natural rubber from ozone attack with no migration of the antiozonant as in classical chemical antiozonant systems. An up to date patent search on in-mould coating techniques and systems was carried out and evaluated in conjunction with some current commercial coating methods. In this overview, more emphasis is laid on the nature of the coating material which subsequently determines the appropriate coating technique, than on the specific in-mould coating process applied. Post-mould coating work with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on natural rubber substrate was also assessed. An experimental and theoretical study of the diffusion of the antiozonant N,Isopropyl N-phenyl-pphenylenediamine (IPPD) through a protective coating on a natural rubber substrate is made in the project. This study shows that the protective coating is able to reduce the loss of antiozonant through diffusion while giving the rubber adequate protection from ozone. The study also demonstrates that the combination of a commercial antiozonant and a protective coating gives enhanced product service life and provides protection to damaged regions of the coating.

Abstract:
Migration is one of the pillars of the relationship between Brazil and Portugal. Over this assumption, this study aims to understand the formation, the maintenance over time and current configuration of Luso-Brazilian immigration system. Starting from Population Geography, the thesis dialogues with the main disciplines of geographical science, notably Political Geography and Economic Geography, as well as other human sciences like Sociology and Anthropology. A periodization is adopted in an effort to articulate the migration and geographical imaginations seen as result and an inductive process of geopolitical orders. This diachronic perspective takes as bottom line the formation of portuguese territorial state and, later, the formation of brazilian territorial state. The research seeks to emphasize, particularly, how brazilian and portuguese immigrants, men and women, participates on the recent transformations of Brazil and Portugal. Since the end of this decade, there is a situation in which migration flows and counterflows are virtually equivalent. Quantitative and qualitative data were used to demonstrate that portugueses in Brazil and brazilians in Portugal, those whom emigrated from 2000 until now, have different profiles in terms of age, sex, educational level and labour market insertion. The analysis of the similarities and differences between these groups of immigrants led to the consideration that they do face barriers and different challenges, but combine a contribution to a redefinition of a historical and asymmetrical relationship, strongly marked by the sharing of a Luso-Brazilian population.

Dawson, Rebekah Ilene. "On the Migratory Behavior of Planetary Systems." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10955.

Full text
Abstract:
For centuries, an orderly view of planetary system architectures dominated the discourse on planetary systems. However, there is growing evidence that many planetary systems underwent a period of upheaval, during which giant planets "migrated" from where they formed. This thesis addresses a question key to understanding how planetary systems evolve: is planetary migration typically a smooth, disk-driven process or a violent process involving strong multi-body gravitational interactions? First, we analyze evidence from the dynamical structure of debris disks dynamically sculpted during planets' migration. Based on the orbital properties our own solar system's Kuiper belt, we deduce that Neptune likely underwent both planet-planet scattering and smooth migration caused by interactions with leftover planetesimals. In another planetary system, Beta Pictoris, we find that the giant planet discovered there must be responsible for the observed warp of the system's debris belt, reconciling observations that suggested otherwise. Second, we develop two new approaches for characterizing planetary orbits: one for distinguishing the signal of a planet's orbit from aliases, spurious signals caused by gaps in the time sampling of the data, and another to measure the eccentricity of a planet's orbit from transit photometry, "the photoeccentric effect." We use the photoeccentric effect to determine whether any of the giant planets discovered by the Kepler Mission are currently undergoing planetary migration on highly elliptical orbits. We find a lack of such "super-eccentric" Jupiters, allowing us to place an upper limit on the fraction of hot Jupiters created by the stellar binary Kozai mechanism. Finally, we find new correlations between the orbital properties of planets and the metallicity of their host stars. Planets orbiting metal-rich stars show signatures of strong planet-planet gravitational interactions, while those orbiting metal-poor stars do not. Taken together, the results of thesis suggest that suggest that both disk migration and planet-planet interactions likely play a role in setting the architectures of planetary systems.
Astronomy

Tierney, Lauren. "An Agent-Based Model of Wildlife Migratory Patterns in Human-Disturbed Landscapes." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19266.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, human decision-making has led to significant landscape impacts in the western United States. Specifically, migratory wildlife populations have increasingly been impacted by rural urban development and energy resource development. This research presents the application of agent-based modeling to explore how such impacts influence the characteristics of migratory animal movement, focusing on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Western Wyoming. This study utilizes complex adaptive systems and agent-based modeling frameworks to increase understanding of migratory patterns in a changing landscape and explores thresholds of interference to migration patterns due to increased habitat degradation and fragmentation. The agent-based model utilizes GPS-collar data to examine how individual processes lead to population-level patterns of movement and adaptation. The assessment incorporates elements from both human and natural systems to explore potential future scenarios for human development in the natural landscape and incorporates adaptive behaviors, as well as animal-movement ecology, in changing landscapes.

Abstract:
Increasing number of pregnancy applications (apps) are complementing healthcare systems to educate expectants and improve their maternal well-being. Using similar kind of applications for people from multicultural background might have varied impact on their pregnancy experiences. Especially for immigrants, cultural beliefs first set in their home country, might conflict with practices followed in country of residence and information provided in digital resources. This study aimed to compare the perceptions on pregnancy app usage by first-time expectants living in Sweden from native and migrant perspectives. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews through an online platform, Zoom, and explored the users’ opinions on app’ usage. Twelve first-time expectants were recruited through snowball sampling technique using social media group. Data was then analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis. The findings indicate the importance of understanding healthcare practices and social support in country of residence. Participants expressed that they developed a connection with unborn through pregnancy apps. However, app usage raised conflicts between user expectations from knowledge gained by apps and information provided by healthcare system, also exposed potential problems faced by immigrants due to different approaches followed by Swedish healthcare system. Participants using English apps expressed that they are receiving updates according to American healthcare system, while participants using Swedish apps asserted that they are getting relevant information adapted to Swedish society. The study advocates that the apps are not well-suited for migratory background users and provided possible solutions to improve existing pregnancy apps for maximum number of users to benefit.

Abstract:
Classified as a grade IV tumor of the central nervous system, Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) arises from the glia. A poor understanding of tumor metastasis and limited treatment options have led to increase in deaths of patients suffering from GBM. Studying glioma behavior using aligned structures that mimic native glioblastoma metastatic path is challenging. In this study, we utilize a previously described non-electrospinning platform to manufacture aligned 3D structures called STEP nanonets that not only allows the study of individual cell-nanofiber interaction, but also allows the calculation of migratory forces using beam mechanics. In particular, the blebbing dynamics, force generation, and the effect of an actin disruptor, Cytochalasin D have been investigated on a glioma cell line (DBTRG, Denver Based Tumor Research Group). It was observed that cell pulled onto the nanofibers causing measurable deflections when they were in spread and non-blebbing conditions. In non-spread configurations while attached to fibers, the cells acquired spherical configurations and resumed blebbing. The average migratory force generated by cells exposed to DMSO (control, 1:1000 dilution) using nanonets of 2μm by 400nm fibers was 0.58±0.06nN. Actin disruptor, Cytochalasin D severely compromised the ability of the glioma cells to migrate causing no deflection of the fibers. Forces exerted by tumor cells on their native microenvironment affects their ability to metastasize, invade and proliferate. While the result presents actin disruptor as a potential target to minimize metastasis, the influence of other cytoskeleton disruptors can also be studied using the platform. Moreover, the results obtained from the study can be utilized to better understand the individual cell – nanofibers interaction which can shed light on how cells interact with their native environment during metastasis.

Abstract:
Electric fields have been shown to induce cell migration (galvanotaxis) and cell shape changes (galvanotropism) in many cell types, such as neural crest cells, embryonic cells, and chondrocytes [1–3]. In this study, a novel microfluidic system was developed to study individual cellular responses to applied electric fields. These microfabricated channels are made from commercially available poly-dimethyl-siloxane (PDMS). This gas permeable, tough, and transparent polymer provides a sterile tissue culture environment and permits visualization of cells using epifluorescence microscopy. In conjunction with the device, a custom computer program was written to quantify the migratory behavior of cells by analyzing changes in position and cell shape. The flexibility of the channel geometry allows for a wider range of chamber resistance and applied currents (achieving a particular field strength) that may permit further study into the underlying mechanisms of electric field directed cell migration and orientation.
