AbstractSome flightworthy alate exules of Aphis fabae Scopoli reproduce before taking off while others do not. This difference in behaviour is influenced by crowding and has previously been taken as an indication of the urge to migrate, although it has never been conclusively demonstrated. In this study, the flight performance of those aphids depositing some nymphs before take-off (‘flyers’) was compared with those which did not (‘migrants’). In fact, no significant difference was found between migrants and flyers in any of the aspects of post-take-off flight or settling behaviour tested. In t

Migration as a phenomenon is present in the whole history of mankind. It is an unexplained urge for people to change, which is expressed in the search for security, happiness and opportunity for development. At different times, migration plays an important role in the lives of individuals, countries and continents, and becomes an important factor in the development of civilizations, their destiny and security. Politics plays a key role in the development and construction of migratory behavior in society. As a factor, it is related to the security of people, their interests in which their right

Resightings of dyed, staging Dunlins showed that the mean length of stay was 23.4 days. Applying this figure on data from the running bird counts I estimated that 33,928 Dunlins used the area during autumn 1996. Hence Tipperne qualify as a site of international importance with 1% of the flyway population using the area. The maximum number of Dunlins observed in a single autumn count in 1996 was 12,172 individuals. This substantial discrepancy suggests that maximum number is an inadequate measure of volume and with that of site quality. Analysis of a ten years period showed that maximum numbers

Canada’s provinces and territories govern species at risk across most of Canada, with the federal Species at Risk Act generally covering only aquatic species, migratory birds, and species living on federal land. More than a decade after a 2012 report by the environmental law charity Ecojustice on species at risk protection in Canada, we use the same criteria to evaluate the current state of provincial and territorial species at risk legislation, and we provide updates on changes in each jurisdiction since 2012. These criteria are as follows: whether at-risk species are being identified, whethe

Abstract We examined the changes in abundance between 1969 and 1986 of 19 forest-dwelling, mostly migratory bird species breeding in New Hampshire at 2 different scales: one local (an intensively studied 10-ha plot in unfragmented forest) and the other regional (Breeding Bird Surveys statewide). Twelve of the 19 species exhibited similar trends at both scales. Eight neither increased nor decreased, and 4 (Least Flycatcher, Winter Wren, Wood Thrush, and Swainson's Thrush) declined significantly. Others increased, decreased, or remained steady at one or the other scale. Overall, more species dec

Gendered readings of Irish oral tradition were rare in the early nineties, especially in such readable form. I happily urged this example of Éilís’s work on my students of Modern Irish and retained most of her findings in memory. Rereading it thirty years later, however, I’m led among the small drumlin farms of north-west Cavan, where my

The study examined the obstacles to agricultural development in the Hadjer Lamis region of Chad, over the period from 2005 to 2015. Agriculture is one of the professions that founded civilization, and the first revolution of humanity in the history of mankind. It is a human activity that has been widely adopted by most peoples, because about half to two thirds of the world's population depends on it, including Chad, like other developing countries that largely depend on agriculture, where more than 60% of the population works there. It also contributes significantly to economic and social deve

Abstract Dawn was cool and bright in Havana on Tuesday, February 25, 1947. A brisk wind whipped away the high clouds remaining from yesterday’s rains as a golden glow began to unveil the skyline of the city. Newspaper vendors broke the silence with their cries, and bottles clinked on sidewalks and in doorways as milkmen completed their rounds. The rumble of buses and the clanging of streetcars were just beginning. Soon, as if driven by a sudden migratory urge, thousands would board them, joining others on foot and in cars. Chapter four turns to two novels, now widely accepted as part of the Latino “canon” and central modernist texts, to argue for a form of Mexican Ameircan manhood that rewrites citizenship as non-migratory labor. As part of a national literature, this economic citizenship urges pragmatic integration through economic cooperation. By championing the economic capacity of Latinos not as laborers but as managers, inventors, and entrepreneurs, these texts engage with early twentieth-century ideals about productivity and the division of labor, critiquing notions of the so-called “self-made man” and ref
