Full textThis research seeks to analyse the impact of migration on family relations of Turkish immigrants in Italy, and the way ties with the country of origin can affect their migration experiences and future plans. These aspects have been analysed in a qualitative study, exploratory in nature, through 38 interviews with Turkish migrants identified by snowballing who are currently residing in Northern Italy. The semi–structured interview is the main research instrument and consequently, it provides the main sources of primary data for this research. The main focus of the interviews was on family relations and the migration experiences; interview questions were outlined around a few major topics such as the history of the family, their migration choice, the comparison between ‘here’ and ‘there’, the migration experience, the changes that it produces at the level of family relations, the difficulties and community networks. By considering such an understudied community in Italy as the Turkish –within a perspective of family relations– this research seeks to provide an original contribution both to the study of the Turkish migration and to family studies in general.

Full textThe study’s aim is to describe the construction and representation of identity during the adolescent transition. Hypothesizing circularity and reciprocal determination between individuals and society, the study deals with the topic of identity as the result of reflexivity and lifetime chances which are offered by the context. Attention is focused on adolescents with foreign origins, chosen as the subject of study because they are called to experience identity transition in a way which is broadened due to their migratory experiences, and exemplified by paths involving Self-construction which their Italian peers also follow. The analysis thus underscores the generational analogy between Italian and foreign adolescents and the plurality of definitions of identity, also irrespective of any migratory experience. The study followed the visual sociology approach, both in theoretical and analytical terms as well as at the level of empirical research. The 12 Italian and foreign adolescents who were interviewed spoke about themselves through images and videos. 3 types of identity construction were identified thanks to these presentations: relational, planners and dreamers, and a reciprocal connection between individuals and society, and the plurality of paths in the transition to adult life were confirmed.

Full textMigration is a complex and circumstantial phenomenon generating somehow forms of disorientation on the migrants, since the physical relocation influences also the emotional sphere. On one hand, migrants might feel the raising of homesickness and the desire to go back home, but, on the other hand, the willingness to cancel their roots and to broadly adapt themselves to the new society. These feelings of disorientation might be positively overcome through the practice of the creative writing, giving the chance to everybody to express themselves in hybrid texts through the host country language, shaping, in this way, a unique cross-cultural bridge thanks to distinctive cultural and literary features of their homeland. The research framework is focusing, from both a general and specific perspective, on the African migrant writing in Spain through the selected works of four authors: Laila (2010) by the Moroccan writer Laila Karrouch, Las tres vírgenes de Santo Tomás (2008) by Guillermina Mekuy from Equatorial Guinea, Una vida de cuento (2006) by the Cameroonian Boniface Ofogo and Amina (2006) written by the Senegalese Sidi Seck. The analysis of these texts is well-framed within two main flows: the family and the relationship with the host society, linked to the study of the vocabulary related to the above mentioned themes. The reader can feel emotional dynamics and domestic dimensions inside the family microcosm which are beyond the mere concept of “migration”, but where most of cultural pattern contacts arise. The host reality reflects this contact through the dialogue between natives and foreigners, whereas initial conflicts become afterwards opportunities to get closer and to better know each other, leading to the concept that diversity does not divide but connects and improve.

Full textThis study is an exploration of the commitments among migration, transnational dynamics and family structures inside a specific context, the Peruvian one. By a critical comparison with the disciplinary paradigms used in the anthropology of migration, transnationalism and transnational families, and in multi-sited ethnography, I have attempted a theoretical and methodological reading based on the original family and the social context not only as part of a complete peripheral vision of the migrant, but as a specific subject of research. My goal is to verify locally the impacts of external migration of one or more members on the family structures and dynamics, on the codes and roles of the original parental nucleus, as well as to find, transnationally, the networks, the rituals or the practices of connection among those who leave and those who remain, the speeches and the migration cultures developed and shared. The study was conducted in Peru from 2009 until 2011. The research field was based in two main locations on the coast of Peru: Lima, the capital, and Chiclín, a rural village in the northern region of La Libertad. Thanks to the techniques of ethnographic practice of inquiry, a prolonged stay in the locations and my participant observation, I worked with adult members of both sexes coming from three different familiar groups distributed in the two places mentioned above, selected on the basis of departure contacts provided by some of their family members emigrated to Italy during the period 1990-2000. The study of the migration figures normally considered marginal has leaded both to upset partially the transnational perspective and adjust it to the same social actors, and to analyze, rebuild and re- theorize wider migration dynamics.

Full textTo join different approaches in the study of petroleum systems, as to couple the study of surface seeps with geochemical and structural analysis, is a leading aspect in a development strategy for hydrocarbons. The occurrence of pore water in the deep sedimentary successions and its overpressure due to the thick covering sequences, which is enhanced by the hydrocarbons generation at depth, are primary controls for the fluid migration and emission at the surface through the cold seeps. The results from this study provide new elements to understand the role of mud volcanoes study in the frame of petroleum exploration, and new important evidences for the petroleum systems in the areas considered.

Full textThis study explores the connections between migration processes and experiences of health and illness, investigating migration flows from Latin America to Emilia-Romagna. At the same time, the study examines the debate around the spread of Chagas disease, a 'neglected tropical infection' endemic in Central and South America that, given the increase in transnational migration flows, is currently being reconfigured as 'emerging' in the countries of destination. Adopting the theoretical and methodological paradigms of medical anthropology, public health and migration studies, the nature of the relationship between 'neglected' and 'emerging' is analyzed within the policies that shape European migration flows, with specific reference to the Italian case. The issues addressed relate to the legitimacy of the social actors involved in publicly framing the phenomenon, to the visions that inform the health policies for Chagas disease, and to the impact of these visions on the health care practices. Part of the research has been conducted within the hospital ward where the first service for Chagas disease diagnosis and treatment in Emilia-Romagna was established. An ethnography within and outside the service has been developed, involving the main actors in the research field - Latin American migrants and health professionals - with the aim of collecting visions, logics and practices starting from investigating the legislation that regulates access to the public health system in Italy. Through the collection of biographical narratives, the study sheds light onto particular migratory pathways and life trajectories in the local context; reflects upon the validity of categories such as 'Latin American', used in the scientific community in tight connection with Chagas disease; redefines the meaning of a culturally sensitive approach, within a broader re-thinking of the forms of inclusion and participation aimed at addressing health care needs and subjective ill health experiences.

Full textIn 1990, the publication of the book Immigrato by Salah Methnani and Mario Fortunato marked the beginning of a socio-literary movement that will be called by the scholars as letteratura italiana della migrazione. Since then, the number of these immigrant authors grew exponentially and currently there is even an idea of a second generation of writers. These authors are from worldwide and present a wide variety of literary styles, whose socio-cultural contributions are still stigmatized under the name of migrant literature. There are some recent studies that propose to change the nomenclature, trying to mitigate the stereotypical effects about these writers and their works, although the clear difference between immigrant and Italian productions still remains. This study was proposed to understand, at first, what are the invariable production conditions that made all the books written by immigrants to be considered as belonging to the same group alike. In this context, we should put on discussion both critics and the foreigners works to search for a criteria and common characteristics that could explain the situation in which these authors are. Within the rich production of the letteratura italiana della migrazione we choose to work directly with the short story Perla Nera, by Rosana Crispim da Costa, a brazilian woman who lives and writes in Italy, whose production reveals this duality. By analyzing the specific characteristics of this text, we will try to identify if, for the matter of fact, this work can be considered as italian-immigrant or if, on the other hand, the text itself provides some interpretative clues that would lead to other ways of classification.

Full textHuman Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hMSC) are currently tested in several clinical trials. In spite of hMSC efficacy is frequently linked to their ability to reach the affected site, little is known on their migratory behavior and the underlying mechanism. This study was designed to investigate the migratory behavior of hMSC and to test the involvement of Akt, also known as protein kinase B. Akt protein expression and phosphorylation was investigated in hMSC western blotting analysis. Cell migration was assessed by transwell, wound healing and time lapse in vivo motility assays. MSC results fairly migratory and Akt was strongly activated at basal level. Furthermore, the characterization of the major regulatory proteins and effectors, upstream and downstream of Akt, has led to the conclusion that the cascade of reactions of this signaling pathway in hMSC follows a canonical pathway. Pharmacological inhibitors were used to determine the potential mechanism responsible for cell migration and invasion. Blocking PI3K/Akt pathway resulted in decreased hMSC migration. The use of pharmacological inhibitors specific for individual Akt isoforms allowed us to discriminate the different role of Akt1 and Akt2 in the migration of the hMSC. Through our analysis, we demonstrated that pharmacological inactivation of Akt2, but not that of Akt1, significantly decreased cell migration and invasion. Although these results are not fully comprehensive for the understanding of the phenomenon, in the complex indicate that the activation of Akt2 plays a critical role in allowing the migration of the hMSC. The demonstration that the Akt2 isoform is required for the chemotaxis of direct hMSC, makes this kinase a potential pharmacological target to modulate the migration of such cells.
Baldi, Giada. "Una migrazione controllata : selezione e controllo politico dei migranti italiani in Belgio nel secondo dopoguerra (1946-1956)." Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100199.
Full textThe thesis deals with the post-war Italian assisted migration to Belgium (1946-1956) and it is particularly focused on the "political aspects" of the selection of migrant workers and on the "political control" of their activities in the receiving country. Despite the economic origins of this migration flow, my intention was in fact to study all the political issues concerning the management of the phenomenon, with reference both to the two national contexts of departure and arrival, and to international political circumstances, marked by the Cold War. The principal aims of my research were, therefore, to reconsider the interconnection between economic and political factors; to delve into the divergent strategies and political interests of the two countries involved in organising such working exodus; and to examine the real implications of political questions on migrants’ lives. The dissertation is composed of two main parts. In the first part, I have examined the recruitment system implemented in Italy, as well as the selection of candidates carried out by the Belgian Commission and by other Belgian officials at the Migration Centre in Milan. In the second part, instead, I have studied the political control over Italian migrants with respect to associations, social care and services, trade unions and newspapers on the one hand, and on the other hand, I have taken into account police surveillance and expulsion measures related to the Belgian ban on foreigners getting into politics

Full textThis research focus on antifascist migration from Liguria to France, explaining how it has been mostly toward the South-East and Paris. It doesn't target general studies: its focal point, indeed, is on common people and migrant families’ experience. The “Common people” expression must be historically, socially and culturally contextualized. By examining the topics of Ligurian subjects involved in the Interwar period exile, identified in their own original territory, the common people category becomes a precious instrument to evaluate society network dynamics from inside. The regional study allows to follow transnational networks with a strong native town or party identity, a typical Italian migration modality in France, which organized itself in “petits villages italiens” rather than the American model of “Little Italies”

Full textThis thesis investigates the migration of inventors by studying their contribution to the innovation at both destination and in their home country, after controlling for individual characteristics such as gender, education, experience, company mobility and others. In addition, we decompose the flows of migrants by entry channel in the destination country, such as the education channel, the multinational channel or when the inventors change of company and investigate the selection of migrants and the productivity gap between natives and migrants. Also, in the analysis, we decompose the cohort of entry in the destination country to compare the productivity differences among migrants themselves. Finally, we study whether return migrants are more productive than their non-migrants’ colleagues in origin countries, as a function of their experiences abroad

Full textThe thesis aims to investigate, with a descriptive approach, the role of the practices of welcoming, inclusion, help and care, expression and emancipation of migrant women in Italy, starting from a reflection on the dramatic dimension of female migration. The heart of the research is the investigation of performing arts and practices, and especially of social theatre, whose methodology is particularly effective in the social inclusion of migrant women, as it focuses more on processes than on products, more on actions than on representations, more on the community than on the audience, more on relationships than on mediations. The role of social theatre in the practices of inclusion for migrant women is investigated in particular in the context of the Metropolitan City of Milan, in the face of an accurate mapping of the most significant projects that use media, arts, performance and culture for the inclusion of migrants, carried out in connection with the University Research project Migrations|Mediations and with the PRIN project Performing the social. In particular, we get to highlight and discuss the critical issues of some social theatre experiences with migrant women which, for different reasons, could not have a full realization.

Particularly, the forms of this kind of communication have been in depth analysed within adolescents of foreigner origins living in Milan. Aims of the research were: 1) outlining communication and socialisation practices technologically mediated (such as the use of cellular phone to exchange photos, videos etc. or the participation in social network), typical of the target group; 2) highlighting the role of these new communication practices in shaping peculiar relationship between migrants and indigenous culture, in terms of integration/differentiation processes; 3) defining if and how such behaviours enable a space of creativity, selfdetermination and cultural mediation between multiple belongings; 4) identifying any strategy of identity constructing in transnational terms.

Full textThe present study and analysis examine the transformations in the representations and the models of the female identity occurring in migratory contexts, particularly focusing on those from the first to the second generation. The aim of this research is both to study the strategic step for the integration process of the foreigner and the evolution of our society from the point of view of the birth of new identities. The study develops into two sections. A theoretic one that deeply goes into the analysis of the development of the identity concept from west cultural tradition until post-modernity. This approach takes into account the cultural dimension and the gender belonging, especially considering the family and the adolescence. The second part - empirical - summarizes the results of a qualitative research carried out between 2005 and 2006 interviewing the members of eight Albanian families living in Italy, composed of at least one adolescent daughter. The results show that the Albanian community, that despite living in our country for some decades now is still stigmatized, through the hopes of its second female generation and the "seal capacity" of the family, is able to creatively build hybrid identities, as well as original possibilities of integration.

Full textThe contemporary context seems to be marked by a great human challenge which calls each of us into question about the meaning of educating in this time of plurality. The time we live in is characterized by the migration phenomenon , the stable presence of citizens of foreign origin living in the Italian territory and by a globalization of the human person. The present work has examined, within the framework of qualitative research and the current social context, the life stories of Ghanaian-born parents living in the province of Bergamo and Brescia. This was carried out in an attempt to problematize multiple pedagogical categories related to the parenting function. The result is an interesting cross- section that shows the importance for these parents to maintain a bond with the country of origin, the need to open up to the context in which they live, and the challenge found in the relationship with their children born and/or raised in their country of residence. The research has shown how pedagogy, by accepting these experiences, is able to promote reflections and spaces of interest in which mutual differences are an opportunity for common growth within the multiplicity of cultures.

Full textPupils with disability coming from migratory backgrounds are frequently present in current, multi-ethnic and in constant changing society and school. Scientific attention to the phenomenon in Italy is still limited. The purpose of the work is to analyse educational and didactic aspects of this category of children, which are characterized by a double inclusion difficulty, through the understanding of migratory dynamics and cultural representations of health, illness and disability. Transcultural questions of migratory shock and different conceptions of health, illness and disability in the world and in foreign countries are addressed in this study with respect to the inclusion of pupils with disability and pupils coming from migratory backgrounds in Italy, for the purpose of focusing on “children with disability coming from migratory backgrounds”. An exploratory field research at schools in the province of Piacenza, with interviews to teachers and analysis of scholar documents, has allowed a practical understanding of the phenomenon. Theoretical and experimental research conducted support a trans-cultural special Education and Didactics approach, which considers children with disability coming from migratory background and their needs through a multidimensional view: both disability and different cultural belonging need to be addressed through a global and integrated action and method.
