ABSTRACT The subject of the article is the experience of social exclusion present in five contemporary novels on childhood and adolescence spent in the Swedish folkhem, by Jonas Gardell, Lena Andersson, Mikael Niemi, Torbjörn Flygt and Susanna Alakoski. In the first part of the article I am discussing social exclusion as a term used in the debate about the Swedish welfare-state in crisis. The second part is an analysis of the literary texts, using a sociological perspective. I am focusing there on portraits of the children that are main characters in the novels, the children whose personal identity is being shaped in the shadow of the collective dream of a perfect society. Asking a question about the specifically Swedish character of those children’s sense of exclusion, I am referring to the words of the social democratic leader Per Albin Hansson, who in his speech of 1928, presented a vision of Sweden as a happy and fair common home (folkhem), in which there is no place for either favored citizens (“darlings”), or for second-class citizens (“stepchildren”).

Our times of ecological disasters and climate crisis inspired the author Mikael Niemi to write the novel Fallvatten (2012). The narrative deals with what happens when a dam in a hydro-electric power plant bursts, and creates a tsunami-like flood. The purpose with my essay was to make a thematic analysis of this novel from an ecocritical, ecofeministic and postcolonial perspective. The genre and its importance for the themes and the shaping of the novel were also noticed in the essay. My questions were: Does the author use an ecocritical, ecofeministic and a postcolonial approach in the novel? If he does, how is that shaped in the narrative? Is the story adversarial to civilization and/or technology? Is Fallvatten an ironic novel? If it is, what is the irony about? What are the characteristics of the genre ecothriller, and why can the novel be placed in this genre? How does the genre influence the themes used and development of the story? By using the method of close-reading I have made a thematic analysis of the novel Fallvatten, with a theoretical frame of ecocriticism, ecofeminism and postcolionial theory. The results of the analysis demonstrated that this novel can be regarded as an ecocritical, ecofeministic and postcolonial “rewriting”. In the narrative nature is personified and depicted as an active agent who takes vengeance on humanity’s greed. The author is deconstructing dichotomies and stereotypes about the view of both gender and nature. He is also depicting the Sami cultural identity as hybrid and heterogeneous.  Fallvatten can be placed in the genre of ecothriller, because the environment is a premise for the story and it also includes an intense and increasing suspense. The genre has enabled the author to create a polyphonic and rhapsodic novel containing several protagonists with a variety of points of view. In the story, the protagonist´s personal problems get exposed, and forces of good and evil within them reveals, trough their encounter with the disaster. Fallvatten might be adversarial to civilization, but not to technology. In the story technology is depicted positively and it often seems to be indispensable. The narrative contains several Bible-references, which seems to be meant as a parody. But I don´t consider Fallvatten to be an ironic novel. Instead, I see it as a seriously meant story written with a sense of humor and with an ironical tone. I believe the author handles weighty subject matters in the novel with humor and irreverence because it works in a subversive way, with an ecocritical, ecofeministic and an anticolonial aim.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the didactic potential of Mikael Niemis novel Popularmusic from Vittula as it relates to working with the fundamental values of the Swedish schoolsystem from two perspectives. The first of these relates to how the novel portrays gender, witha particular focus on masculinity and how it interprets itself, femininity, and the world aroundit. The second of these perspectives relates to how it portrays the national minority grouptornedalingar and their situation in Sweden. This paper aims to illustrate not only how thesetwo perspectives are portrayed but motivate why they are useful in the work with fundamentalvalues. To answer these questions this paper utilizes the qualitative method of close reading in theanalysis of Niemis novel. The theoretical lense through which this is done includes researcherMalin Alkestrands definition of didactic potential as well as a repertoire of gender study andpostcolonial terminology, such as otherfication, masculinity and boyology. The study findsthat the didactic potential of Mikael Niemis text as it relates to gender lay in how it breakswith the traditional gender norms of rural masculinity. Another important factor is how thetext highlights the role of femininity and music in shaping the new male identity of thenovel’s protagonist, Matti. The study also finds that the didactic potential in Niemis portrayalof tornedalingar lay in its emphasizing of the political nature and origins of the historicotherfication of said ethnic minority.

[Handledare: David Mighetto, Docent, fil. dr]    1.   Introducción   1.1.   Síntesis Esta tesina trata de si es posible traducir la novela sueca Populärmusik från Vittula del autor Mikael Niemi al español, una obra con muchas palabras y expresiones específicas de la cultura sueca, sin perder partes fundamentales de carácter lingüístico-cultural. La novela fue traducida al español por Martin Lexel y Cristina Cerezo en 2005. Me interesa analizar cómo han traducido fenómenos culturales, nombres propios y frases hechas. Sin embargo, es importante puntualizar que el propósito no es encontrar errores en la traducción al español, sino investigar cómo se ha hecho la traducción y ver si ésta puede transmitir al lector español el mismo conocimiento y las mismas asociaciones culturales y ambientales que se dan en la novela original. Hay investigaciones anteriores que muestran las dificultades que pueden surgir al traducir fenómenos específicos de una cultura a otra, en particular en casos en que no existe un equivalente lingüístico directo en la lengua meta (la lengua a la cual se traduce el texto). El primer capítulo empieza con la hipótesis y el objetivo del estudio. Luego viene el trasfondo científico y el marco teórico. Allí presento diferentes problemas que se encuentran haciendo una traducción y diversas estrategias de traducción. Además, presento las categorías descriptivas que uso en mi investigación. Al final del capítulo están el corpus y el método de la presente investigación. En el segundo capítulo hay una presentación cuantitativa del estudio, donde pongo en evidencia cómo se han traducido los diferentes fenómenos que encontré al leer paralelamente la novela original y su traducción al español. En el tercer capítulo expongo la discusión del resultado que encontré haciendo la elaboración cuantitativa de los datos, y doy ejemplos de mis categorías y subcategorías que serán usadas para comprobar mi hipótesis. En el último capítulo, el de las conclusiones, establezco que los traductores, en general, han traducido los fenómenos en conformidad con lo que dicen los antecedentes científicos, pero que también existen casos que no lo han hecho de forma esperada, algo que puede causar que en lectores hispanohablantes de la traducción en español se susciten asociaciones de palabras o frases distintas de las que experimentan lectores de la novela original.   1.2.   Hipótesis En Un rock'n'roll en el Ártico, la traducción del sueco al español de la novela Populärmusik från Vittula, se han perdido partes fundamentales de carácter lingüístico-cultural existentes en el texto original.     1.3.   Objetivo, propósito y presentación del problema El objetivo de la presente investigación es analizar desde una perspectiva lingüístico-cultural la novela Un rock’n’roll en el Ártico, que es la  traducción del sueco al español de la novela Populärmusik från Vittula, para tratar de presentar cómo refleja la traducción la vida en Pajala en los años sesenta, que es la época en la que se desarrolla la acción de la novela fuente. En otras palabras, concretamente analizo cómo se han traducido reduplicaciones, nombres propios, frases hechas, palabras compuestas por sustantivos, símiles y sustantivos referidos a la naturaleza y a la cultura, que son típicos del idioma sueco. Estas palabras y expresiones no exigen explicación en el texto sueco; sin embargo, pueden ser difíciles de comprender para un hispanohablante si son traducidas en forma directa y sin explicación contextual.
