Abstract:
Introduced by Mikhail Bakhtin, the notion of ‘speech genres’ (Bachtin 1979) is fundamental to discourse studies. It enables to describe messages from various fields within a uniform methodology, and discover (inter)dependencies between literary works and the repertoire of genres used in other areas of communication, whilst also providing tools for comparison of the repertoire of forms of speech used in various cultures. The article outlines the main threads of the research done in Poland in reference to the Bakhtin concept. The most essential accomplishments include: (i) a description of numer

This paper analyzes socio-cultural identity finding its expression in creative activity. As a methodological basis the dialogic approach of Mikhail Bakhtin is used. It allows typologizing ways of constructing and expressing identity. There are three main types: direct, object, and double-voiced (ambivalent) identity. A particular case of double-voiced identity is stylized identity, implying reproduction of some value and behavioral patterns while maintaining a certain distance towards them. Stylization-identity is considered on the example of the historical reenactment subculture. Theoretical

Within the field of meaning (re)production, the newly fashioned media theories have been stemming from Marshall McLuhan's and Mikhail Bakhtin‘s “hybrids” and generating what we are presently experiencing as flexible theoretical phenomena, exposed to immediate change and constant altering, due to the overflow of media-related materialities. Orbiting the ancient concept of ekphrasis, this study aims to immerse the product resulted from the literary description of a work of art in the conceptual works-in-progress known as intermediality and remediation. In this paper, I study the bodies in Mare Kandre’s two novels Bestiarium (1999) and Xavier (2002), with the help of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the grotesque. I examine the worldview that is portrayed in the novels – focusing on the attitude towards death – and seek answers to the following questions: how do the human bodies look and how do they relate to their surroundings? What does the way they are portrayed say about the world the novels portray? And what role does laughter play in the novels? I also examine the similarity between a grotesque body, and a gothic monster. As a result, I fi

This study aims to examine the norm-breaking body in Sara Stridsbergs literary fantasy Drömfakulteten (2006) or The Faculty of Dreams (English translation, 2019) which explores Valerie Solanas’ life. Solanas is known for the feminist text SCUM Manifesto (1968, Swedish translation, 2003) and for shooting the artist Andy Warhol.  Solanas has a very distinct separation between body and mind that is apparent in the novel. She ignores her body and whishes not to be aware of it. She only ever thinks about her manifesto, which becomes her mind. To explore the norm-breaking body, my essay is based on

In this essay Murakami Haruki’s novel The Wind Up Bird Chronicle was analysed from the perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope. The aim was to explore the concept of time and space as presented in the novel. In particular, the analysis focused on how Bakhtin’s chronotopes can be applied to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, how the chronotopes can enhance our understanding of the novel, and finally how the chronotope theory can be applied to the concept of ‘magic realism’ that is often used to describe Murakami’s authorship. Four chronotopes, presented by Bachtin, were selected and
