[Transformed Materials] is an exploration into today's design methodologies of architecture production. The emergence of architectural form is questioned in relation to the temporal state of design intent and the physical material construct. At a time when there is an increased awareness of the current state of technology, material innovation and methods of fabrication, there are new speculations of what materiality is and can be. This thesis will propose an architecture that emerges through an exploration of the material concept that directly informs and expresses the fundamental ideas of the project. Building methods have changed widely over time, and are co-responsible for creating a dialog between functional requirements, technological invention, and material implication that reflects the current cultural state. Today's architectural products have in a sense reverted back to thin surfaces. Current cultural issues such as socioeconomic, environmental impact, transportability, efficiency, lightness, storability, technology, and mass production, have over time created a state of "thinness ". This project tries to offset the current trend of building by accepting the norms of architectural products, and reinventing their role within a contemporary language that explores more deeply the material qualities and properties associates with it. This thesis will use steel as the primary building material. Steel is a material that has become standardized in how it is shaped and formed, thus its ability to produce an architecture has been reduced purely to a dogmatiC approach of engineered solutions or preconceived results. Steel, is artificial by nature; if we suspend our preconceptions of steel, could the material be designed such that its role is critical in defining space, structure and program in a tectonic system? The area of research and examination will be focused on the design of a Material Research Center (mRC). located in Milan, Italy.

Ma recherche est une étude qui reconstitue le milieu littéraire, culturel et intellectuel dans lequel se trouve l’écrivain italien Franco Fortini (1917-1994) pendant son séjour en Suisse. La section centrale de la thèse est une édition critique de La guerra a Milano qui, d’un côté, fait ressortir la leçon originaire destinée à être publiée en Suisse, et qui de l’autre rend évident, à travers l’apparat critique, l’évolution des variantes introduites par les éditions de presse. Le texte qui fut publié en 1963, en effet, issu d’un travail de correction effectué vingt ans plus tard, fut privé des passages en italique qui, décrivant la condition de réfugié du jeune écrivain, créaient un remarquable contrepoint à la narration historique. Le texte du ’63, de plus, n’a plus un rôle autonome, mais est accompagné (ou mieux – contre la chronologie – anticipé) par le récit Sere in Valdossola. Avoir récupéré cette forme originaire du texte, en la préférant aux deux éditions (1963 et 1985), nous a fait pencher pour une édition qui mette en évidence la leçon de Z (1943-44) et signale en apparat soit les variantes génétiques (celles de Z, placées dans le premier paragraphe), soit les variantes évolutives des éditions de presse (à recenser dans un second paragraphe). Dans l’appendice on a reproduit aussi la leçon du manuscrit, accompagnée d’un apparat qui signale les variantes internes. Un bref commentaire final comprend des notes explicatives du texte (des traductions des passages en langue étrangère, des références à des personnages ou à des évènements historiques, etc.). Ma recherche permettra ainsi aux chercheurs (et, plus tard, par une éventuelle publication de la thèse à des lecteurs plus nombreux) de connaître un document inédit d’un des auteurs italiens les plus remarquables de la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle
My research examines the literary, cultural and intellectual milieu in which the Italian writer Franco Fortini (1917-1994) lived during his stay in Switzerland. During this stay, in fact, Fortini tied many friendships with Italian and French intellectuals, such as Ignazio Silone, Adriano Olivetti, Gianfranco Contini, Starobinski, Paul Eluard, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. The central section of the thesis is a critical edition of La guerra a Milano which, on one hand, highlights the original lesson to be published in Switzerland, and on the other, makes clear, through the critical apparatus, the changing variants introduced by the new editions. The text was published in 1963, in fact, after a twenty-years-long correction work, and was deprived of the italicized passages describing the refugee status of the young writer, that created a remarkable counterpoint to the historical narration. The 1963 text has an autonomous role, but it is accompanied (or better - against the timing - advanced) by the story in Sere Valdossola. To have recovered this original text, instead of the two editions (1963 and 1985), highlights the lesson of the typescript (1943-1944). In the appendix we have also reproduced the lesson of the manuscript, accompanied by notes that signal internal variants. A brief final comment includes explanatory notes of the text (translations of foreign-language passages, references to characters or historical events, etc.). My research will thus enable researchers (and, later, thanks to eventual publication of the thesis, many others readers) knowing an unpublished document of one of the most outstanding Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century. La guerra a Milano is Fortini’s first text to be written in its entirety and to be reissued during the postwar period with the publication of Sere in Valdossola (1963)

The design of an airport terminal building can be viewed as a specialized case of the design of a large building. One of the major planning and design issues of typical large buildings is that of accommodating multiple uses. Airport terminals are not mixed-use in the sense that commercial and residential space share the same building, but they are from the point of view that they enclose some very specialized functions together with commercial, hotel, office, and meeting space. The trend has been to increase these functions at airports since they are highly concentrated nodes of long range transportation. The particular uses depend largely on the city which the airport serves. The airport's location and proximity to a city should also influence its architecture. The image, materials, and theme of any building are important, but especially so for a terminal which is to welcome people from distant locations. These considerations were applied to a specific case: the design of a new terminal building for Malpensa International Airport in Milan, Italy. The main effort here was to develop a major terminal facility based on a local theme. the arcade.

For Milan Kundera, the question of identity is one of the essential questions around which a novel is constructed. The novelist attempts to define the issue by exploring the existential themes that are tied to it. These themes are examined from different angles with the aid of what the author calls "motifs". Our study is centered on one of those motifs, that of the mirror, through which the author explores the "enigma of the ego". The typological analysis of this motif in Kundera's ten novels brings out in the characters two fundamental attitudes with regard to their identity. The first consists in clinging to it, which results in the character's disquiet, while the second consists in freeing oneself from it, which leads to a better understanding of reality as well as to a certain form of wisdom.

Abstract:
This study suggests a combined reading, between memory and displacement, of three different Milan Kundera novels where characters are exiled (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Ignorance). Our hypothesis is that the displacement comes with a change in the way that the exiles remember the past: since they cannot count on linear memory (related to the modern regime of historicity) to conserve a link with a past from which they are spatially separated, they resort to a new kind of memory that we propose to define as variational memory. To define this term, the Homeric intertext will serve as an interpretive key: the figure of Ulysses, called upon by the narrator of Ignorance concerning the theme of exile and nostalgia, gives the opportunity to see how variational memory (memory by return of motifs) is built like an answer to the impossibility of epic memory (idealistic memory of a perfectly conserved past) and the failure of linear memory (which is always falsifiable).
Cette étude se propose de faire une lecture croisée entre la mémoire et le déplacement dans trois romans de Milan Kundera dont les personnages sont des exilés (Le livre du rire et de l'oubli, L'insoutenable légèreté de l'être et L'Ignorance). Notre hypothèse est que le déplacement s'accompagne chez les exilés d'un changement dans leur façon de se souvenir du passé : ne pouvant plus compter sur la mémoire linéaire (propre au régime moderne d'historicité) pour conserver un lien avec un passé dont ils sont spatialement séparés, ils recourent à ce que nous proposons de définir comme un nouveau type de mémoire: la mémoire variationnelle. Afin de définir ce terme, l'intertexte homérique nous servira de clef interprétative : la figure d'Ulysse, convoquée par le narrateur de L'Ignorance à propos du thème de l'exil et de la nostalgie, permet de voir comment la mémoire variationnelle (mémoire par retour de motifs) se construit en réponse aussi bien à l'impossibilité de la mémoire épique (mémoire idéale d'un passé parfaitement conservé) qu'à l'échec de la mémoire linéaire (mémoire par définition toujours falsifiable).

Abstract:
During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why he chose to publish his work in French rather than in Czech. This thesis analyzes the themes of language and memory in connection with exile in two of Kundera's novels, Le livre du rire et de l'oubli (1978) and L'Ignorance (2000). We contend that these concepts serve as anchors and tethers, stabilizing forces meant to help exiled characters recreate their identity outside of their homeland. By exploring notions of language and memory in these novels, Kundera demonstrates how the experience of exile affects the human condition during the latter half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
This thesis engages with migration literature in Italian keeping at the centre of the analysis its dissemination. I argue that this approach offers new insights into the ways migration dialogues with contemporary Italian literature - and, more generally, with contemporary Italy - with a focus on the work of translingual authors writing in Italian. The aim of this research is not to engage critically with the body of texts written by migrant writers. Rather, it focuses on sites of dissemination of this production, analysing the aims, content, and outcomes of selected case studies from this perspective. Key concerns are the public perception of migration and growing attention in the media: this thesis seeks to explore to what extent these tensions emerge when migration literature is communicated to a wide public audience and whether they affect the way in which these writers and their works are presented. This thesis considers these case studies in relation to the scholarly debate on transnational and migration literature in Italian. Thanks to the notion of 'cultural intermediary', I discuss the role and prerogatives of agents involved, for example the creative nature of their work. The case studies cover a range of time that spans from the early nineties to 2017 and they include: initiatives devoted specifically to migration literature such as series of book launches and workshops (Centro culturale Multietnico La Tenda in Milan, Seminari della Sagarana); television broadcasts (with a focus on three television broadcasts on the Italian public television channel RAI 3); educational materials for schools; and writers (Compagnia delle poete and Gabriella Ghermandi). Thanks to this approach, this thesis inserts some crucial moments of the dissemination of migration literature in Italian into a polycentric network of initiatives that uses the internet as a means to communicate and as a repository of materials. The thesis demonstrates the impact that these modes of dissemination have had not only on reception, but also on artistic practices and the production of literary texts.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the intersection between scientific practices and political economy from the time of Maria Theresa's and Joseph II's reforms in the Habsburg State of Milan to the Cisalpina and Italian Republics. It is structured in four parts, corresponding to the themes of "appropriations", "technologies", "spaces" and "soils". Each of these parts comprises of two chapters, with the exception of the last one on "soils". Part I, named "Appropriations", explores how the Società Patriotica took on board the practices and debates which originated in the context of French Physiocracy, such as economic milling and the question of the scale of land-holdings, and analyses how they were appropriated to fit the political economy of the State of Milan. Part II, titled "Technologies", takes into account the attitudes of Milanese reformers, public officers and naturalists towards mechanical arts and, in general, towards technology for the achievement of the felicità and utilità pubblica. Part III of the dissertation has been named "Spaces". It focuses on the travels of naturalists Domenico Vandelli, Paolo Sangiorgio and Lazzaro Spallanzani, using them as starting points to examine the significance of natural history practices, such as travelling and collecting, for an understanding of contemporary political economy. Part IV, titled "Soils", examines a series of texts about the management and making of salnitro, showing their relevance in the context of the newly founded Italian Republic. Overall, the thesis aims to acknowledge the complexity, as well as the intellectual debts, of the production of political economy and scientific knowledge in the State of Milan, and pushes forward the debate on the Italian Enlightenment, by opposing those narratives which have represented it as a marginal and peripheral case in the broader and more "international" European Enlightenment.

For several critics, Milan Kundera's novels illustrate the disenchantment of the world and the demystification of all myths. In this thesis, we accept this point of view while insisting on the persistence of sacred elements in the works of Kundera. We formulate the hypothesis of the "inoculation" of a sacred part (i.e. myths, scenes and figures of the Holy Bible, etc.) in the prose of the novel---"le caractere concret, quotidien, corporel de la vie", as Kundera wrote---in order to anchor this often unstable matter and alleviate the brevity of the character's life. Our analysis of three novels (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Farewell Party and The Joke) reveals an oscillation between the sacred and the prose within the works of Milan Kundera. This movement is illustrated, in the text, by the motif of the baroque angel.

A Paris comme à Milan, l’implantation des communautés catholiques d’origine chinoise, qui se sont développées tout au long du XXe siècle, a suivi le rythme des fluctuations de l’histoire migratoire du continent asiatique. Prenant la mesure de l’enjeu de l’accueil de ces nouveaux fidèles, les autorités ecclésiastiques françaises et italiennes ont mis en place un certain nombre de structures et de dispositifs particuliers. A travers une étude ethnographique comparative, cette thèse propose d’analyser la façon dont les institutions ecclésiastiques de chaque pays accompagnent la structuration de ces groupes de fidèles chinois. Au cours de ce travail de recherche, nous nous sommes intéressés notamment aux différents parcours de vie de ces croyants, ainsi qu’aux motivations à la base de leur foi catholique. Plus particulièrement, nous avons analysé la façon dont ces éléments influençaient leur pratique quotidienne du catholicisme. Nous avons également étudié le rôle que ces communautés catholiques jouent en termes de maintien du lien de ces migrants chinois avec leur pays d’origine et leur culture
Chinese Catholic communities living in Paris and Milan developed throughout 20th century following Asian migration flows. Being aware of the challenge of welcoming these new believers, French and Italian church authorities implemented specific structures for Catholic migrants. Through a comparative ethnographic study, this thesis offers to analyze how ecclesiastical institutions in Italy and France follow the structuring of Chinese faithful groups. During this research, we focused on churchgoers’ life stories and motivations behind their Catholic faith. More specifically, we analyzed how all these elements influenced their daily practice of Catholicism. We also studied the role that these Catholic communities play in terms of keeping connections between Chinese migrants and their culture

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to investigate the importance of Italy, as a real and imaginary country, in British Romanticism, particularly in women's writings. Since the heyday of the Grand Tour, Italy has been approached as an alien and distant country, but also as a liberating and stimulating reality. Italy as an 'other country' constitutes an important element in the delineation of British Romanticism. The opposition between North and South, which was developed and consolidated by Romantic authors, constitutes the theoretical frame for this work. As part of southern Europe, Italy stands in opposition to Northern societies. North and South, however, are not simply in opposition; they merge and interconnect in the literary production of the time. Italy and Great Britain exemplify the dialogical connection between apparently irreconcilable opposites. In women's writings, Italy is exploited as an alternative imaginary setting onto which they can project their anxieties, their artistic ambitions and their dreams of literary success. The role of Italy in women's writings is important to demonstrate their participation in contemporary social, national and political issues. The work focuses first on travel reports and the real encounter with Italy. Then it analyses the imaginary figurations of Italy in Gothic literature and in poetry at the end of the eighteenth century. With the beginning of the nineteenth century, the idea of Italy as a morally liberating and artistically stimulating country is consolidated in the works of Stael and Byron. The representation of Italy as an ideal country for women artists makes their support of the Italian fight for independence particularly important. Since Italy represents a feminised and politically enslaved country, women associate its effort to gain freedom with their own struggle for political and social emancipation.

Abstract:
This study, an investigation into Ambrose of Milan's thought on the human body, is based on his writings which provide a panorama of intellectual and spiritual development recorded over the course of his twenty-three year bishopric (A. D. 374-397). Adding to earlier research, this study proposes an examination of one major idea within this remarkable man's literary legacy. Although he never wrote a specific treatise on the subject, his works are imbued with the genesis, nature, meanings and religious significance of the human body. Ambrose's anthropological thought is permeated with the tridimensional dynamic of God, humanity and the world. From this essential premise, his thoughts, beliefs and attitudes flow. In his deliberations, descriptions and interpretations about the human body, he subjugates both Classical and Christian sources to his perceived task, a Christian understanding of human nature. The framework follows an incremental pattern which describes and interprets bodily nature. Seven interpretative levels provide a systematic model of inquiry for textual and conceptual analyses. Special emphasis is given to Ambrose's adaptation of the Stoic infrarational faculties. The interpretative levels describe the human body as constituted, created, healthy, controlled by passions, mediated by reason, celebrated and transformed. This theoretical construct illuminates the data drawn from his writings in an orderly fashion.

Abstract:
Evidence on comparative quality of life and housing of Italians at origin, and emigrants in two destinations was gathered from field research, and from three surveys: one, of residents of the town of origin (n = 153), Larino, in the province of Campobasso, and the other two, of residents of major destinations of Larinesi emigrants--Montreal (n = 118), and Milano (n = 73). The main working hypothesis was tested that the best quality of life is found among emigrants living in Montreal. The research also explicated the historical connection between policies of migration and housing concerns in Canada and in Italy.
Quality of life was measured using a battery of structural, objective and subjective indicators that were calibrated for relative comparisons between the two cities of destination by the re-analysis of two large surveys (Milano n = 966; Montreal n = 461), and by the use of of official statistics.
Multivariate analysis results showed that in comparison to the town of origin, Montreal produced the best and most distinguishable socio-demographic context and Milano the best geographic context. The objective indicators based on the ratios of income to need and those based on income relative to each city, are most influential in Montreal. Subjective indicators such as attitudes and lifestyles are more consistently related to levels of education than to place of residence.
High rates of house ownership among the Larinesi in Montreal, and changes in their patterns of use of space which accompany permanent resettlement--especially those regarding the use of an extra kitchen--were found to be explainable in terms of the "housing culture" of the town of origin.

L'Affaire Salman Rushdie possède des caractéristiques spécifiques---le contexte politico-historique, la particularité de la fatwa promulguée par Khomeyni, la critique de l'altérité par la fiction---qui participent d'un débat riche en idées à partir duquel il est intéressant de dégager une réflexion particulière sur la compréhension du social aujourd'hui en Occident. Dans le présent travail, nous étudierons trois réflexions utilisant chacune un cadre d'analyse spécifique pour aborder l'Affaire: Milan Kundera et le roman européen; Claude Lefort et l'idéal démocratique; Fethi Benslama et le pouvoir de la fiction de l'origine. Il sera intéressant, au final, de constater que bien que l'angle d'analyse différé, les conclusions tirées par ces auteurs pointent dans une direction similaire, que nous résumerons en quatre temps: (1) le roman est un outil de questionnement de la réalité; (2) le questionnement de la réalité s'articule autour d'une remise en cause des fondements de la société, plus précisément autour d'une réflexion sur l'origine; (3) la remise en question de ces fondements repose sur la valorisation du doute, lequel est indissociable de la division et du conflit; (4) la réflexion sur l'Affaire Rushdie amené à constater que les sociétés occidentales traversent une période de transition qui se caractérise par une difficulté à défendre les valeurs qui leurs sont propres quand elles sont confrontées à l'altérité.

The creation part of this thesis will take the form of four short stories. The first one is the story of Jonas. The day of his solemn vows, Jonas leaves the monastery after having seen a woman who has awaken in him a desire of freedom absent until then. The second tells the story of Denise, a waitress in a restaurant stuck in a feeling of deep solitude. She regains contact with the world through a cat that awakes in her the desire to share her life. The third story will be of Maryse, the woman whom Jonas saw. Maryse is a country girl who had left her small town to live with her fiance in the city. She leaves him to regain the purity and calm of her small country town. The last story is the story of Jean, Maryse's fiance. After she leaves, he goes looking for his missing cat, witch will lead him to Denise.
The notion of chance is omnipresent in the works of Milan Kundera. Concentrating mainly on three novels, La Valse aux adieux, L'Insoutenable Legerete de l'etre and L'Immortalite---where the author proposes a "Theory of chance"---this study focuses on the foundations and consequences of chance in the fictitious world of Kundera. L’époque moderne est marquée à Milan par l’empreinte de Charles Borromée, archevêque de 1564 à 1584. Canonisé en 1610 pour être donné en modèle du parfait évêque dans toute la chrétienté, Charles Borromée conçoit avant tout son rôle historique à l’échelle lombarde, par une mainmise sans précédent sur l’écrit. Quand les études se sont arrêtées sur la discipline sociale imposée par les évêques tridentins, le parti de cette thèse est de porter l’attention sur le phénomène du gouvernement de l’écrit borroméen, de l’épiscopat de Charles à celui de son cousin Frédéric Borromée (1595-1631). Les individus pris en compte ne se limitent pas aux familiers de la maison de l’archevêque. Sont retenues les trajectoires les plus saillantes de ceux qui écrivent pour l’archevêché et forment son « atelier ». Le corpus examiné réunit des écrits savants et hagiographiques, aussi bien qu’administratifs et juridiques. En observant les formes prises par l’écrit et les contraintes du service de l’archevêque par la plume, on lie ensemble deux histoires d’ordinaire dissociées : la fabrique d’un modèle d’évêque et les pratiques d’écriture commandées par le gouvernement épiscopal. La thèse présente successivement la formation de l’atelier de l’archevêque aux lendemains du concile de Trente, la fabrication locale de l’autorité de Charles Borromée au début du XVIIe siècle, enfin la sortie du modèle de l’atelier, avec l’institution, par Frédéric Borromée, d’une bibliothèque érudite peuplée de lettrés de métier, la Bibliothèque Ambrosienne (1609). Modern Milan is marked with the seal of Carlo Borromeo, archbishop from 1564 to 1584. Though his canonization in 1610 establishes him as a model for the entire Christian world, Carlo Borromeo defines his historical role mainly within the boundaries of Lombardy, where he secures an unprecedented control over the written production. Whereas previous studies have focused on the social discipline enforced by the Tridentine bishops, this thesis draws the attention on the Borromean governance of the written production, from Carlo’s to his cousin Federico’s archbishopric (1595-1631). Its scope is not limited to the members of the archbishop’s family: the remarkable careers of individuals writing for the archbishop, members of his « workshop », are thoroughly studied. The examined sources encompass hagiographic, learned, as well as administrative and legal texts. Through an analysis of these various kinds of writings and of the constraints weighing on whoever served the archbishop with a pen, this thesis links two usually separated historical topics: the elaboration of a model of bishop and the specific practices imposed by a Modern bishop in the written production. We examine successively the forming of the archbishop’s workshop just after the Council of Trent, the local elaboration of Carlo Borromeo’s authority in the early 17th c. and finally Federico Borromeo’s dissociation from the model of the workshop through the setting up of a college of learned men endowed with an erudite library, the Ambrosiana (1609). The description of the mechanisms, shapes and media of the texts written for the archbishop of Milan sheds light on a conception of power in Modern Times

The subject of my research is the female consort and her court. I focus on three Austrian Archduchesses: Giovanna, Barbara and Eleonora Habsburg who came down to Italy in the second half of the sixteenth century and married into the ducal houses of Florence, Ferrara and Mantua respectively. My thesis compares the structures, roles and relationships in these three contemporary female courts, and analyses the consorts’ reliance on personal consumption, gift-giving and patronage activities to assert their power, position and identity. My research is primarily based on the unpublished letters and accounts preserved in the three state archives of Florence, Modena (which contains the Este archive) and Mantua. My thesis starts with a background chapter on the history of the three Duchesses, and then turns to address each Duchess’s financial situation, the organisation of her court, her attitude to her husband and her new family and the particular circumstances of her life. This chapter sheds new light on the position of the consort, and sets the stage for the exploration of her patronage and consumption. My first case-study focuses on clothing. I examine the Duchesses’ choices in dressing themselves and their courts and analyse their treatment of clothing as a valuable visual language. My second case-study focuses on the gifts of food that were sent to and from the Duchesses. I discuss their function as items of relatively small economic value in the creation of patronage relationships and in the process of social and political mediation. The central tenet in my case-studies is that objects could act as coded messages, with multiple meanings which can be dissected by studying owner, receiver, means of transmission and the type of object itself. My approach employs material culture as a means for enriching current knowledge of a particularly under-researched subject: the female consort.

My thesis explores the extent to which people's nationality informs their engagement with popular culture and strategies of social distinction (Bourdieu 1984). I address this question by studying the emergence of popular music criticism as a new cultural sector in Italy, and more specifically the practices of critics working during the 1970s. Drawing on Bourdieu's field theory (1996), and combining archival research, social history and discourse analysis, the thesis explores the different dimensions of criticism as a social practice. On the one hand, it analyses the social biography of critics and the boundaries of music criticism as a cultural field; especially as regards class, gender and place. On the other hand, it studies the way critics evaluated different forms of Anglo-American popular music – such as rock, jazz and soul – and how their aesthetic claims and distinctions were received by their audience. The thesis argues that the social trajectory of critics shaped the way they distinguished themselves from national culture and, as a result, their cosmopolitan critique of Italian cultural and political institutions. Furthermore, the thesis argues that the social diversity of critics' audience, and their active contestation of critics' claims, made the music press a space for reflexivity about the inequalities shaping both the field and Italian youth culture. From a theoretical point of view, the thesis expands Bourdieu's field theory taking into account: a) the effects of global forces on the construction of national cultural fields; b) the impact of aesthetic experiences on the habitus (Bourdieu 1984) and practices of cultural producers; c) the forms of reflexivity and critique enabled by specific fields of practice. The thesis provides an original contribution to the study of media, music cultures, taste and cultural production.

Authors often explore the details of identity and body politics through their writing. Czech author Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being deals heavily with the marginalized and oppressed body, considering how such bodies function, how they perceive themselves, how they are perceived by others, and how such bodies are, by nature, a defiance of an established hegemony. The novel considers the exiled body and how such exile can deliver freedom, cause further marginalization, or craft an ambivalent mixture of the two. The oppressed and marginalized body, as understood through literature, acts not just as a mirror of society but also as an avenue for navigating a subject as dense as identity and body politics.

Book Summary: The essays in this collection explore the languages - artistic, symbolic, and ritual, as well as written and spoken - in which power was articulated, challenged, contested, and defended in Italian cities and courts, villages, and countryside, between 1300 and 1600. Topics addressed include court ceremonial, gossip and insult, the performance of sanctity and public devotions, the appropriation and reuse of imagery, and the calculated invocation (and sometimes undermining) of authoritative models and figures. The collection balances a broad geographic and chronological range with a tight thematic focus, allowing the individual contributions to engage in vigorous and fruitful debate with one another even as they speak to some of the central issues in current scholarship. The authors recognize that every institutional action is, in its context, a political act, and that no institution operates disinterestedly. At the same time, they insist on the inadequacy of traditional models, whether Marxian or Weberian, as the complex realities of the early modern state pose tough problems for any narrative of modernization, rationalization, and centralization. This is the very first historically informed investigation to offer an account of the origin of the elzeviro. The elzeviro was a very particular typology of newspaper article unique to the Italian press, printed in the two, two and a half or three columns on the left-hand of the cultural section of every daily political newspaper between 1903-4 and the end of the 1970s. Even though, by the end of its life span, the elzeviro had acquired a special meaning, that of a text with no narrative content, an almost gratuitous literary exercise, nevertheless for millions of Italian readers, for almost fifty years it represented the only contact with literary production. This thesis recovers the elzeviro to its journalistic dimension, retracing its origins in the transformation of the communicational space of the newspaper between 1870 and 1920. The original contribution of this research consists in the very first definition of the elzeviro as a newspaper article that originates as the answer to the modernisation of journalism occurred at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the primacy of news began to undermine the legitimacy of the subjective moment of the opinion. The foundation of the elzeviro lies in claiming a territory that was felt to be the province of opinion: literary journalists demanded that subjectivity not be discarded, and proved that the operation could be undertaken through an alternative instrument for the interpretation of reality: that of literature and culture. Literary journalists carved out their own personal space within the newspaper, where they were not forced to comment on news but could instead decide what constituted news and how to comment on it. The elzeviro is the account of the discovery of this news: for this reason, its discursive and colloquial dimension is the basis on which that type of article is organised, as the textual organism is bound by the aim of communicating news values.

The varying degrees culminate when dreams and reality merge: how does the line that distinguishes the two become blurred? Can it be defined or delimited, and above all, on which thematic ground?

The thesis is framed in the disciplinary field of urban sociology and aims to analyse municipal entrepreneurship support policies promoted by the cities of Milan (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain), with a focus on the experiences of young people up to the age of thirty-five who have benefited from the different measures during the years 2012 to 2016. The concept of entrepreneurship, explicitly and sometimes implicitly accompanied by that of self-employment, is central in many policy agendas at many levels of government. In Europe, indeed, the growing concern about the persistence of high levels of unemployment, especially among young people, combined with the consolidation of activation as a paradigm in the reorientation of public actions for social inclusion, have made entrepreneurship a key instrument not only for economic development strategies, but also for activation policies (inclusive entrepreneurship). At the local level, European cities are particularly active in supporting inclusive entrepreneurship, being also able to count on the fact that new economic opportunities have found fertile ground in urban contexts, driven primarily by the growth of the service sector and a distinctive capacity for innovation. However, despite its relevance, this issue has been scantly addressed in the literature. In this context, the thesis proposes an interpretative framework for exploring this object of study that incorporates, on the one hand, neo-Marxist-inspired and neo-Weberian approaches to urban policy and governance and, on the other hand, the socio-economic literature and theoretically relevant institutional documentation on entrepreneurship, including within the framework of studies on the reorganization of the welfare state. The critical reading of the reference literature has led to two analytical macro-approaches. The first highlights the thesis of the convergence of urban policies towards neoliberal modes of governance, and welfare models based on market needs and competitiveness instead of social cohesion. A trend that entrepreneurship support policies seem to exemplify. The second highlights the peculiarities of the European city, identified with the resistance of the compromise between growth and social inclusion objectives, and supports the opposite thesis of the divergence between cities, the relevance of the political dimension and the local policy actors. Within this framework, the research has focused on how local political actors interpret, invalidate or reproduce the mainstream approach to entrepreneurship support policies and the role played in this respect by institutional factors and political aspects. Besides, the investigation included the analysis of the implications in terms of redistribution of risks and opportunities among the young people interviewed. To this ends, the research has availed itself of a qualitative methodology, case-based comparative analysis and the technique of the interview. The study revealed the heterogeneity of municipal entrepreneurship support policies concerning ideas and values, objectives, measures and tools, as well as the experiences of the young beneficiaries. Finally, the thesis highlights how policy orientations, local political paradigms, institutional legacies and governance arrangements interact to shape specific and different approaches to entrepreneurship support policies in the two cities, and how these influence the capacity to govern socio-economic changes.

This is a thesis about English and American imaginative identification with Italy in the period 1848–1865, facilitated by and expressed through periodicals and newspapers. At the centre of the thesis sits New England magazine The Atlantic Monthly, which during the Civil War emerged as a vehicle for abolitionist literature, but which also published extensively on Italy. The Risorgimento, the movement that sought Italian unification, triumphed in 1861—the same year that the battle of Fort Sumter signalled the start of the American Civil War that would last until 1865. This thesis investigates the transatlantic relationship between the Risorgimento and the Civil War as it emerged in The Atlantic Monthly, The Springfield Daily Republican and other nineteenth–century publications, and it does so through contextualised readings of Arthur Hugh Clough, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Emily Dickinson. These three seemingly very disparate authors are connected by The Atlantic Monthly: Clough’s epistolary poem on the fall of the 1849 Roman Republic, Amours de Voyage, was first published there in 1858; Harriet Beecher Stowe serialised her historical Italian romance Agnes of Sorrento in The Atlantic Monthly between 1861 and 1862; and Dickinson was inspired to write a series of poems on Italy and volcanoes after reading both The Atlantic Monthly and local morning newspaper The Springfield Daily Republican. They are also connected by their fascination with Italy. This thesis argues that nineteenth–century periodicals need to be studied in a transatlantic context: they cannot be read, in the traditional style of Benedict Anderson, as simple affirmations of nationalism and national culture. Abstract:
Questa dissertazione e imperniata sulla parola masca, che denota un personaggio popolare e antichissimo di genere femminile, riscontrabile esclusivamente nel folclore e nella letterature della regione italiana del Piemonte. Si attribuisce a questo personaggio la facolta rarissima di esercitare tanto il bene che il mate, a seconda de¡ casi.
La tesi si basa su ricerche storiche e linguistiche che traggono i loro dati dai recessi piu remoti della civilta celtica in territorio piemontese, dove essa e prosperata dall'inizio del 4° secolo a.C. fino al 1° secolo della nostra era, epoca alta quale questa regione fu inglobata dall'impero romano.
Basandosi su dati storici e archeologici, la ricerca prende atto di un substrato celtico persistente e profondo nella cultura e nella tradizione piu antiche del Piemonte. In modo particolare si concentra l'attenzione sulla derivazione dei personaggio della masca da una figura religiosa dei Druidi, venerata fervidamente dai Celti, i quali attribuivano a questa divinita il dualismo tipico (bene-male) che si riscontra nel personaggio oggetto di questo studio.
In seguito si traccia il discrimine tra la masca e le streghe demoniache con cui la prima e spesso e del tutto erroneamente confusa ed associata. Una volta tracciata questa distinzione si possono riallacciare i legami tra la masca e il suo sacrale pristino ove ('equilibrio sotteso tra bene e mate e permanente e inestricabile dagli attributi fondamentali della dea celtica centrale, la Grande Madre.
Le ricerche etimologiche per appurare l'origine della parola masca non fanno che confermare la dualita e l'equilibrio tra il bene e il mate inevitabilmente compresente in questa parola e nel personaggio ch'essa denota.
Si passa in rassegna la tradizione orale e la letteratura del Piemonte (tanto in lingua piemontese che in lingua italiana) per, inventariare i diversi significati che possono assumere questa parola e questo personaggio. Si perviene a dimostrare che la dicotomia di valori e di poteri contrastanti insiti nella religione dei druidi rimane ad un dipresso la stessa nel personaggio delta masca. Ci si puo imbattere in questo dualismo di valori opposti e antitetici anche in altri personaggi del folclore piemontese, strettamente connessi alta masca, quali il mascon, i1 setmin o anche in personaggi mitologici, come la faja, il faunet e il servan.
La somma di queste prove letterarie, folcloriche, archeologiche e filologiche avalla l'attribuzione di un carattere unico, non demoniaco, al personaggio della masca, che riannoda strettamente la letteratura e la tradizione orale del Piemonte alta religione dei druidi e al passato celtico, fornendo altresi scorci preziosi su uno dei capitoli piu oscuri del passato delle etnie europee.
