The research is concerning two unusual evidences of the late Medieval art, which could be seen in the Museum of the cathedral St. Stephan in Vienna. Both of them are related to Herzog Rudolf IV of Austria (1358 - 1365). One artefact in the museum is his silk gold woven shroud elaborated with especial mastership from Chinese silk in Tabriz, a city in present Iran. Especially important for this fabric is that thanks to the interwoven name of the ruler it could be dated precisely. The road of this Near East fabric to Europe and to the tomb of the Herzog in Vienna could be reconstructed. Rudolf IV

The implications for the history of medicine in medieval Scotland are significant, suggesting that, at least at court level, Scots demanded and could afford and attract a high quality of medical treatment. AbstractThe construction from 1386 of Milan Cathedral, the largest Gothic church ever constructed in Italy, was one of the most important episodes in the history of Italian and European architecture. The documentation of the lateTrecentoand earlyQuattrocentodiscussions over how to build the Cathedral is extraordinarily rich and extensive, and permits a consideration of the project from many points of view including the relationship between medieval architectural theory and an actual project. Onomatopoeias are one such class. The question of these words is completely unexplored historically. One of the stories in the Slavonic translation of the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great allows for observations on the ways in which three times in Old Bulgarian literature an adequate translation was sought for the animal sounds with which Satan tried to drive

Abstract What are collective emotions and how should we deal with accounts of them in historical narratives? Addressing these questions through a case study of the movement of the Pataria in Milan (1057−1075), this essay reflects on some mechanisms used to assign collective emotions by authors of medieval narratives. It argues that while individual and collective emotions are not distinct in the Latin vocabulary of eleventh-century texts, the authors still had a clear idea of what we call collective emotions, which they closely linked to political mobilisation and upheaval. The Middle Ages saw the revival of the ancient institution of the city-state. This revival was most successful in the most economically developed part of Europe—northern Italy, where cities like Florence, Milan, and Venice became major political and cultural centers and the region itself the most urbanized in medieval Europe. The dynamic culture of the city-state shaped the greatest medieval poet, the Florentine Dante Alighieri (ca. 1265–1321).

It has become conventional to accept the subsequent ‘reforms’—constitutional, political, military, social, economic, and religious—as marking a decisive break between the ancient and medieval worlds. Most of all, attention is drawn to the establishment of the ‘Christian Empire’ by Constantine (the Edict of Milan conferring imperial favour on the Church was issued in 313), and the foundation of Constantinople by the same emperor in 324. It unpacks how the intense debates that surrounded the eucharist in late medieval and early modern Europe relate closely to a range of poetic concerns: how signs relate to what they signify, how words mediate the agency of author and reader, and how poetry embodies meaning.
