Abstract:
Nepal is currently ranked 2nd among the Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) in United Nations Peace Support Operations. In this context, this paper examines the contribution of the Nepali Army's military conduct and discipline to the effectiveness of UN Peace Support Missions. The theoretical foundations delve into pertinent theories, particularly emphasizing Kevin S. Donohue's concepts of Discipline A (voluntary, value-based Attitudes) and Discipline B (externally enforced Behavioral responses) within the military framework. Maintaining conduct and discipline in UN peace operations is essential for ensuring the credibility and legitimacy of these missions. Therefore, prior UN reports and the Secretary General's Special Bulletin from 2015 to 2022 are comparatively analyzed to reflect on occurrences of misconduct involving peacekeepers from TCCs. Likewise, a quantitative comparative analysis assesses the status of the Nepali Army in terms of military conduct analyzing the rate of allegations of misconducts against it. The study employs descriptive statistics to analyze the status of misconduct allegations including that of serious misconduct to advocate for a stronger integration of military conduct with UN peacekeeping mandates, aiming to enhance overall effectiveness and elevate ethical standards in international peace operations. The findings underscore Nepal's exemplary practices in fostering both Discipline B and Discipline A within its peacekeeping forces. The paper concludes by demonstrating the substantial positive impact of disciplined behaviour on mission outcomes

Abstract:
In our social system, the armed forces are provided with certain autonomy. The entry into the armed forces depends on the fulfilment of certain demands. The military profession is maintained through closed education and training systems. This fulfills the conditions for maintaining tradition, designing organisational culture, ethics, collectivism, cohesiveness and military discipline. Military discipline in a military organisation is manifested through a Command and Control System. Military values, trust, professionalism and commander’s leadership skills are taken into consideration in this respect. Normatively and legally regulated military discipline provides the commanding structure with formal authority and liability. Appropriate military discipline is based on wilful acts and individuals’ self-discipline. Wilful military discipline of an arranged leadership and suitable command and control system will enable the armed forces in the present defence and security environment to attain the set objectives. Commanders at all levels of command and control should understand and be fully acquainted with the military organisation, individuals and respective units and commands. Regardless of the potential changes to the defence and security organisation, the transformation2 of the armed forces and their structure and scope, the presence of military discipline will always be necessary. The meaning of military discipline must be properly understood in order to be imparted and enhanced in a military organisation.

Montesquieu and Roman Military Discipline: Opinions,Interpretations, and SourcesSummaryMontesquieu’s influence on the development of modern public lawis undisputed, but he also played a very important role in shaping theperception of the Roman art of war. Like Machiavelli, he devoted a considerable amount of attention to Roman disciplina militaris. His comments were quite general, but they exerted a substantial influence onthe opinions of scholars of military discipline. Along with Lipsius andMachiavelli, he was one of the most cited authors, and his perceptionof military discipline was even reflected in some of the arrangementsemployed in the French army under the First Republic. Research on thereception of Roman ideas on the art of war usually stops at the MiddleAges, but Montesquieu’s work as a writer and his impact on later scholarsare the best justification for studying his opinions on this issue.

Abstract:
Military discipline is one of the indispensable institutions belonging to the military sphere. It manifests itself first in the existence of a hierarchical relationship of subordination between soldiers of lower rank and their superiors. The notion of military discipline includes the acceptance of a certain system of values and the observance of the rules of military institutions. The necessity of ensuring an acceptable level of military discipline is inseparably connected with the system of institutional criminal-military responsibility. This paper indicates and describes acts recognised by the Polish legislator as crimes against the principles of military discipline and presents evaluation of the adopted regulations both for the time of peace and a hypothetical armed conflict.

The value of the discipline is to providefundamental knowledge and practical skills in the organization of remuneration of labour, to teach how to charge and pay wages correctly and timely to employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to be able to analyze expenses related to compensation of employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The task of this discipline is to form and develop general and professional competencies in this field, to train fully developed, qualified and competitive military specialists capable of carrying out financial and economic activities of the military unit.It has been established that in today's conditions, in order to ensure quality education in military higher education institutions, special attention must be paid to the introduction of advanced pedagogical technologies in the educational process. Accounting disciplines, unlike many other economic disciplines, are based on events that are changing rapidly. Therefore, in order to form a high-quality military financier, the main emphasis in teaching accounting should not be on mechanical memorization of educational material, but on the development of thinking. The question of the close relationship between theory and practice is relevant nowadays.

Abstract:
***In the context of the intensification of the forces of the civil-military regime and the intensification of population control strategies, in 1969 the discipline Study of Brazilian Problems (EPB) was created. Directed to higher education, it was an ideological instrument of the educational project of the military to confront the student movement and the supposed threats of communism. In this sense, the text aims to contribute to the discussions about the project to socialize the interests of the military regime in Brazilian universities, based on documentary research, contextualizing the EPB discipline at the Federal University of Viçosa (MG), through official sources, such as the catalogs of disciplines of the institution and of the minutes and documents of the meetings of higher collegiate councils of the period of validity of the discipline (1969/1993). With regard to the research in its locus, one can conclude, due to the organization of the BPS courses and their validity, the full adherence to the institution. Another point that deserves to be highlighted was the realization of the courses of EPB merging students of the University College and undergraduate and postgraduate courses, even such practice not being prescribed by law. What gives us the strength to think that there was not a didactic-pedagogical effort, to suppose by the differences between the levels of schooling, but rather the commitment in transmitting the message of the military governments to the Brazilian students.

Abstract:
The paper presents the development of the research subject of military psychology as a scientific discipline within psychology as a branch of science. The development of psychology in the military context is presented from its beginnings in 1947 and through seven and a half decades of establishing its constituents (language, methodology, empirical data, etc.). Military psychology was created and has been developed by psychologists employed in military organizations and military research-educational institutions through their work on selection and classification as well as on training and education of personnel for defense purposes, applying multidisciplinary and psychological knowledge to the life and work of military personnel in peace and war. The development of the research subject of military psychology has been analyzed through two periods of society development, namely, through the changes of socio-political circumstances which influenced the scope and content of psychological research in the military, thus shaping the particularities of the subject. The first period deals with the development of the research subject of military psychology in the former SFRY and the JNA (1947-1992) while the second period presents military psychological research in different sovereign entities (Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia) and their military organizations (the Yugoslav Army, the Army of Serbia and Montenegro, and the Serbian Armed Forces (1992-2022).

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the psychometric study of the author's questionnaire evaluation of propensity to violation of service (military) discipline. It analyzes the problems of assessing the personal characteristics of military personnel, who periodically and grossly violate the established order and rules of conduct, are characterized by professional insecurity and low performance discipline. Theoretical analysis of the problem of discipline allowed to justify the creation of innovative diagnostic techniques. Psychometric research was carried out in the form of evaluation of structural validity of the questionnaire, as well as the study of the type of distribution of the indicator "Propensity to violation of military discipline". A correlation with some indicators of other diagnostic techniques aimed at identifying constructs that are theoretically known to be associated with the tendency of military personnel to behave in violation of the established order was established. In the course of comparative research the dynamics of development of cadets of the Military University of the Ministry of defense of Russia propensity to violation of military discipline was studied. It is shown that in the process of training and professionalization of the personality of the cadets have been harmonized as the personality of the soldier (in terms of compliance with the service (military) discipline). The study material makes it possible to predict the probability of occurrence of deviations of behavior in military personnel, as well as to carry out appropriate preventive work in a timely manner.

SummaryA recent Comment article suggested replacing the established term warfare ecology with the name ‘military ecology’. This emerging and important sub-discipline requires an accurate, inclusive, and descriptive name. Maintaining the broad term warfare ecology reaches beyond the military to beyond to involve a much wider range of processes and stakeholders, including non-state parties and insurgencies, contractors, civilians, humanitarian and relief organizations, and reconstruction/restoration efforts. It has been adopted by practitioners from a similarly diverse range of disciplines, and used for important research that would not be included under a field limited to military studies.

Abstract:
Discipline forms the backbone of all military organisations. While discipline is traditionally associated with draconian punishment, this association is increasingly only applied to non-Western contexts. African rebel movements and similar, weak organisations are represented especially often as lacking non-coercive means of instilling discipline. This article explores the utility of coercive discipline in one such context – the Second Liberian Civil War (1999–2003). I argue that Liberia's weak military organisations faced significant restrictions when it came to employing direct coercion. Executions, which are often equated with coercion in existing literature, threatened to rive the already frail organisations. Even other formal instruments of discipline, such as military hierarchies and rules and regulations, remained contested throughout the war. Consequently, more indirect means were adopted. Ultimately, the main users of coercion were not military organisations, but peers. This suggests that it is easier for strong organisations to coerce their members, and that the relationship between coercion and organisational strength may need to be reassessed. Furthermore, existing positive perceptions of camaraderie between brothers-in-arms requires re-evaluation.

Abstract:
The article focuses on clarifying the humanity of President Ho Chi Minh’s military discipline. This is an idea with profound theoretical and practical value, practically contributing to fostering each soldier’s revolutionary nature and noble qualities and personalities of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers”. The discipline of the Vietnamese People's Army is a principle and regulation in the national legal document system, which is concretised into regulations, regulations, and regulatory systems, ensuring the direction and unity of all military activities. The characteristics of military discipline include: self-discipline, strict, based on orders, charters, and regulations. At the same time, it promotes the role and the value of people, all for people, taking education, persuasion, and perfecting human personality as the center. Based on a general assessment of the current situation, the authors propose a number of main measures to continue promoting humanity in strengthening army discipline to meet the requirements of the task of building and protecting the fatherland in the current situation.

Abstract:
There are broadly five interconnected meanings of the noun ‘discipline’. Disciplinawere instructions to disciples, and hence a branch of instruction or department of knowledge. This religious context provided the modern educational notion of a ‘body of knowledge’, or a discipline such as sociology or economics. We can define discipline as a body of knowledge and knowledge for the body, because the training of the mind has inevitably involved a training of the body. Second, it signified a method of training or instruction in a body of knowledge. Discipline had an important military connection involving drill, practice in the use of weapons. Third, there is an ecclesiastical meaning referring to a system of rules by which order is maintained in a church. It included the use of penal methods to achieve obedience. To discipline is to chastise. Fourth, to discipline is to bring about obedience through various forms of punishment; it is a means of correction. Finally there is a rare use of the term to describe a medical regimen in which ‘doctor's orders’ brings about a discipline of the patient. In contemporary society, there is, following the work of Michel Foucault, the notion of increasing personal regulation resulting in a ‘disciplinary society’ or a society based upon carceral institutions.

Abstract:
The Australian Defence Force (adf) has had a number of inquiries or reviews into its military justice system in the past two decades. The recommendations of those inquiries have led to an increasing ‘civilianisation’ of the military discipline system. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the specific requirement of section 70 of the Defence Force Discipline Act (dfda) which requires sentencing authorities to explicitly consider ‘civilian’ sentencing principles. Given that the vast majority of adf personnel plead guilty during summary hearings, it is the sentencing process that is the most critical exercise of legal principles in the summary jurisdiction. The requirement to explicitly consider civilian sentencing principles, where such principles are not defined in the dfda, and are hotly contested amongst highly educated and experienced civilian lawyers, is impractical, inappropriate and does not serve what should be the fundamental purpose of the dfda: the maintenance of service discipline. This paper will discuss the difficulties of the current ‘civilianisation’ of the sentencing process and will propose potential guidelines for legislative reform of section 70 of the dfda, particularly in relation to summary authority hearings.

Introduction. The article substantiates the relevance of addressing the problem of political education of military personnel under contract at the present stage of development of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Aim and objectives. The purpose of this research is to substantiate the ideas that serve as the basis for the development of the concept of military-political training of military personnel under contract as a discipline. Material and methods. The material of the research is normative legal documents on the organization of political education in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, as well as materials of pedagogical research devoted to the development of concepts of educational disciplines in General and their content in particular. The analysis of these materials allowed us to formulate the main ideas of the concept of military-political training of military personnel under contract as a new academic discipline in the political education of military personnel, the organization of the process of its development. The concept reflects the conditionality of the political consciousness of military personnel under contract by the nature of their military professional activities, the form of participation in the system of relations inherent in their professional group. The research is based on the theoretical provisions of the activity approach to the construction of pedagogical processes, the subject-subject paradigm of building pedagogical interaction in professional teams, and the competence approach to the selection of the content of professional training. Results and discussion. According to the developed concept, the purpose of military-political training of military personnel under contract as a discipline is to form the military personnel’s competencies necessary to perform professional tasks with political content; subjective images (personal meanings, meanings and relationships) that form the cognitive basis of the political consciousness of military personnel. The concept assumes active inclusion of military personnel in the system of public relations and phenomena of state military policy. The selection of material is based on the General purpose of training a specialist, the system of cognitive goals and opportunities of the discipline. Carried out conceptualization focuses on the need for leading, core concepts (ideas) in the course content; definition of the basic (invariant) core and variant parts of the content of the training modules, to correlate this material with the level of cognitive activity of students; allocation of consolidated problems of professionally-oriented nature, the resolution of which requires knowledge and skills in the academic discipline; select content and determine the scope of a training module, selection of methods of cognitive activity. The use of «content nodes» of educational material (conceptual, worldview, subject-image, activity) allows us to specify the control and evaluation system aimed at checking the formation of military personnel’s competencies under the contract in solving a set of educational and professional tasks. Conclusion. The developed concept serves as an indicative basis for solving the problems of developing the political consciousness of a military serviceman under a contract. The results of the research allow us to clarify the ways and means of forming the political consciousness of conscripts during the period of changing ideological priorities in professional education and training of military personnel.

Machiavelli on Roman Military DisciplineSummaryThe importance of Niccolò Machiavelli’s work for the evolution of modern political ideas is indisputable, but the organisation of military forces was an equally important issue for him. Although most researchers usually ignore this aspect, Machiavelli’s ideas exerted a significant influence on subsequent developments in European military discipline. He was inspired to a large extent by the works of the ancien authors containing descriptions of terms of service in the Roman legions. His attention focused on the Republican period, though he also examined episodes from the Imperial era. Nowadays he is recognised as one of the most influential authors of military treatises, whose ideas on military discipline had a substantial influence on its evolution.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The year 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Second World War and the 75th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy: respectively the first major conflict in which geologists were deployed professionally in uniform by opposing sides from the start of hostilities, and the first successful major amphibious assault whose planning was significantly influenced by geologists. ‘Military geology’ had become established within major world powers as a discipline relevant to military operations, following its initial development in the First World War. The term in English had entered scientific literature via publications in the USA from 1917 onwards, initially by Joseph Ezekiel Pogue, Jr (1887–1971). This followed use of ‘Militärgeologie’ from 1913 by Walter Kranz (1873–1953) in Germany, a term subsequently used also in Austria-Hungary, although mostly replaced by ‘Kriegsgeologie’ in both nations from 1915 and by ‘Wehrgeologie’ from about 1935. However, ‘géologie militaire’ was in French use even earlier, notably in the sub-titles of books by an infantry officer, Joseph-Charles-Auguste Clerc (1840–1910), on the French Alps in 1882 and the Jura mountains in 1888. This term complemented use of ‘géographie militaire’, a name in use since 1836 for a subject whose study was given impetus in France by defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. In recent years ‘military geoscience’ has come into more popular use, reuniting military geology with geography and embracing associated disciplines.

Abstract This article signals the need for an integrated approach to curriculum development and implementation with a focus on a group of disciplines related to the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC). By highlighting various teaching approaches of LOAC, I argue that there is a risk that LOAC be perceived by many non-legal practitioners, like the cadets, as difficult to grasp, interpreted and corelated with real situations they will face daily in operations, exercises or even during execution of routine peace-time duties. I support the idea that the LOAC, as a horizontal discipline in a military academy curriculum, need to be integrated dynamically, both horizontally (in relation to other operational disciplines) and vertically (along the academic path of a military cadet) into the overall construct of learning the basics of the profession of arms. To operationalise this finding, I propose an integrated educational model that suggests horizontal coordination of the academic schedule and enhanced cooperation among the teaching staff of the relevant disciplines.

Abstract The Pentathlon is a combined athletic discipline of the ancient Olympic Games. A detailed exploration of the ancient Olympic competitions in general and of the pentathlon, in particular, allow us to discover1200 years of sport history. The spectacle of the pentathlon contest, the method of determining a winner, the order of the five disciplines is simply fascinating. The modern Olympic Games redefined the pentathlon among the Olympic disciplines. Under the name of the modern pentathlon, it gradually regained its fame won in antiquity. The military pentathlon is a variant of the modern pentathlon deployed within the military organization and is considered the king of military sports. The evolution of the modern battlefield, strongly influenced by the modern combat technique, will surely change the pentathlon contest register. Even if respect for the Olympic spirit is desired, the pentathlon must take into account the evolution of the contemporary society to keep its attractiveness.

Abstract:
The guidance and development of military law are needed and intended to guarantee the respect for human rights, rule of law and justice in the military environment, which among others are manifested through a system of law and order in the law number 25 of 2014 on the law of military discipline. Under the provisions of article 6 paragraph (1) of law number 25 0f 2014, then the law of military discipline should be imposed on any person who under the law equated with the military, including the citizens who are mobilized for their expertise in time of war. The enforcement is considered to be too early, given the sentencing of military discipline for offenders who have violated the law of military discipline must be performed by the Authorized adjudge (Ankum), but on the other hand, the law of number 25 of 2014 on the law military discipline does not provide any explicit and complete arrangements or provisions about the Ankum’s authority in enforcing discipline against citizen who are mobilized in time of war. Through the method of the normative legal research with an approach to the concept and approach to legislation, it can be concluded that assesment of vagueness of these arrangements is quite essential, considering that the vaqueness of these arrangements may result in legal uncertainty, therefore, it is needed more complete arrangement in order to implement the provisions of the law of military discipline against citizens who mobilized in time of war. Keywords : Authority, The Authorized adjudge, Citizens who are mobilized.

Human factors/ergonomics is an applied discipline. As such, we question whether students are adequately prepared if they are not learning, at least in part, from instructors who have real-world experience applying human factors/ergonomics knowledge to practical design problems. A wide variety of other disciplines such as medicine, the building trades, clinical psychology, military strategy, aviation, and the visual and performing arts have all faced this question and come up with educational approaches that typically include educators who are highly skilled in the practice of the discipline. Terms such as practitioner-scholar and scientist-practitioner, and the apprentice models all reflect this notion of students learning from highly skilled, knowledgeable, and practiced professionals in their disciplines. Is it time for human factors/ergonomics education to adopt such a model?

Abstract:
AbstractThe popularity of Foucauldian understandings of government in International Relations (IR) has led to a vibrant debate over the utility of Foucault’s work for the discipline, especially over its applicability outside Western liberal societies. By concentrating on governmentality’s international applicability, however, IR scholarship has neglected Foucault’s account of the foundations of modern social mentalities, apparatuses, and techniques. Foucault frequently based his ideas on historical research, with warfare and military affairs featuring prominently in his accounts of discipline and governmentality.Based on a problematisation of the military aspects of Foucault’s thought, this article challenges Foucauldian IR scholarship to revisit governmentality’s foundations and reconsider the contemporary relevance of Foucault’s account of government. Foucault neglected the heterogeneity of European militaries, such as their reliance on impermanent, auxiliary, and non-Western forces. He thereby missed the opportunity to develop a more sophisticated account of the relationship between force, the military, government, discipline, and biopolitics. Moreover, this article challengesFoucauldian IR scholarship to revisit the empirical foundations of Foucault’s work and reconsider the geographical and temporal extent of the relevance of Foucault’s account of government as a result.

Abstract:
The article investigates the relations between Neo-Stoicism and the model of the Christian soldier developed in the military catechisms which were invented after the Council of Trent. After bringing out how the concept of the just war had been Christianized over the centuries, it shows that in the sixteenth century the discussion concerning the legitimacy of conflicts, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, became a matter of conscience in which theologians had a major voice and a political role. Increasingly, however, thinking about how to behave during a war became more and more important, at the expense of the traditional questions concerning the ius ad bellum. This was also possible thanks to the development of fixed military chaplaincies, like those that set up by the Society of Jesus in Flanders. Finally, a number of texts appeared in the seventeenth century in which theological-moral casuistry, catechism, and military penal law converged to discipline the conscience of soldiers.

Today, the complexity of tactical operations and deployments is such that the body is essential for all military personnel, who must be able to interpret a map and be able to use a compass to move quickly and efficiently on the battlefield. Orienteering can be used to develop many of the qualities that are essential to a loyal, dignified, and honest military man. Finding your way to your destination gives you the guidance you need to navigate a complex and rugged terrain, while moving fast, combining orienteering skills and aerobic exercise capacity. To be competitive at this level, he must train regularly, not only to increase motor skills (such as speed and endurance), but also to acquire cognitive (mental) skills. Soldiers who engage in specific physical activity benefit from an increase in cardiovascular capacity, power, and energy that allow them to sustain physical or mental exertion for long periods of time, builds a certain level of self-awareness and develops a sense of team cohesion.

The development of military law as part of the national law for the security of order, justice and legal certainty within the military. The divestment development is implemented through the renewal of the law of military discipline stamped in Law Number 25 the Year 2014 on Military Discipline Law. Act No. 25 of 2014, it can be understood that the laws of military discipline other than applied to the military, are also applied to every person who is based on the law equated with the military, while also applied to prisoners of war. The enforcement of military discipline laws against prisoners of war may be too late, given the abolition of military discipline for the perpetrators of legal offenses must be committed by an Excusing Superior (Ankum), but acts, Act No. 25 of 2014 does not provide complete and clear arrangements on the authority of Ankum in upholding disciplinary law against prisoners of war. Based on normative legal research with the approach of legal concept and legislation, it can be obtained a conclusion about the norms and regulation of war tactics in Law Number 25 the Year 2014 is important, because the form of legal vagueness can result to the situation of legal uncertainty, especially the enforcement law against prisoners of war. In the next note, a more complete and clear arrangement is needed to enforce the legal provisions of military discipline against prisoners of war.

Abstract:
The paper deals with problematic issues of conducting disciplinary practice by company commanders. The analysis of scientific publications and documents in the studied units showed that the existing system of maintaining and strengthening military discipline in the units is built on the basis of statutory requirements, but some military personnel allow violations of military discipline of various types. A priori research conducted by the authors has revealed that one of the main reasons for this contradiction is a phenomenon known as disciplinary practice distortion. The authors reviewed identified types of disciplinary practice distortion and analyzed possible causes of violations of this kind. As a suggestion for solving the problematic aspects of conducting disciplinary practice, a method was developed to eliminate disciplinary practice distortions in the process of military education in everyday activities. The presented method was tested in the work of the commander of the unit under study on the use of incentives and disciplinary penalties. As a result of the use of this technique, disciplinary practice distortions of all categories of company commanders were leveled, which in general had a positive impact not only on the use of disciplinary power by commanders, but also on the general state of military discipline of the unit.
