The purpose of the article is to characterize the main tactical unit of the Red Army ground forces – the rifle troops. The main role in them was assigned to the rifle division. The 120th Rifle Division, formed in the Orel Military District on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, took part in hostilities from the very beginning of the war. A similar fate was experienced by other rifle divisions formed in the same district – the 19th, 89th, 145th, 149th, 217th and 222nd. The common point for all these divisions was that just before the war they were all in summer camps, where they were overtaken

This is a study of the British 8th Infantry Division on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918. It is set in the context of the dominant historiography of the last thirty years – that the BEF’s experiences on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918 were subject to a ‘learning curve’, that it learnt in a progressive fashion how to fight a skilled enemy. This process meant that the organisation was more effective by its end. The questions asked about operational effectiveness are informed by this debate. First, it establishes context by summarizing three large military operational art traditions – the German, Soviet, and American traditions. Second, it examines why small militaries have adopted the concept, positing that it is due to a mixture of interoperability and cultural reasons. Whereas before there had been an empire governed by three Augusti in relatively equal portions, now the senior emperor held around a third while the junior emperor held two-thirds. The power imbalance caused by the sudden enlargement of Constans’ revenues and military establishment meant that the young emperor was able to throw his weight around, and the senior Augustus was in no position to impose unity. The result was a division of the Roman state. Focusing on the west, this chapter will analyse
