There are more than 100,000 military veterans incarcerated in prisons throughout the United States. Nevertheless, almost nothing is known about these veterans or their incarceration experiences. The data reveal that, with the exception of military service, inmates who are military veterans are

The identification is made on the basis of architectural comparanda and previously unnoticed inscriptional evidence which demonstrate that the space under the Sanctuary of the Standards in the principia was both built as a prison and used that way in antiquity. Penitentiary textile mills became the largest domestic supplier of cloth to Confederate quartermasters, aid societies, citizens, slaves, and indigent families. Abstract:
AbstractVartouhie Calantar Nalbandian (1893–1978), the only Armenian woman known to have been arrested by the Ottoman Turkish authorities in Istanbul in the spring of 1915, was born in Bursa to a Russian Armenian father and an Ottoman Armenian mother. One of the first generation of Armenian girls who received a European university education, Vartouhie sent letters home from Lausanne that would change the course of her life. In 1915, the Ottoman police raided the family home as Tavit Kalantar had been a high-level educator in Armenian schools. They found Vartouhie’s letters to her parents and her father’s papers, which they claimed included incriminating evidence. In August 1915, a military tribunal convicted Vartouhie and her father of propagating Armenian separatist ideology. They served two-and-a-half years in Constantinople’s Central Prison and, thanks to their Russian citizenship, were released after the Bolsheviks signed the Brest-Litovsk Treaty with the Central Powers, requiring “prisoners of war” to be freed.Vartouhie published her prison memoirs in 16 installments in the feminist journal Hay Gin (Armenian Woman), the first prison memoir by a woman in the Middle East and one of the very few for the Ottoman Empire. In 1921, Vartouhie emigrated to the US, where she married Zaven Nalbandian, a high-level Armenian Revolutionary Federation member who participated in Operation Nemesis. In 1926, they published an important book in Armenian on the pan-Turkic movement under the penname Zarevand. In 1971, the newly minted sociology professor Vahakn Dadrian translated their book into English as United and Independent Turania: Aims and Designs of the Turks. Their historical and political analysis, the first study of the Armenian Genocide in the United States, argues that Turkish irredentism had been a real threat for Armenians who stood in the way of the unification of Turkic peoples under one state. This chapter writes a hitherto unknown feminist and historian into Armenian, Turkish, and Ottoman historiographies as well as genocide and prison studies.

This chapter explores the strained relations between Israeli Jews and the Palestinians living in the territories occupied by Israel during the 1967 war, based on a study conducted in an Israeli military prison for Palestinian detainees. The reserve soldiers charged with guarding the prison insisted that their poor military performance and their sense of weakness within the prison power structure were due to a lack of meat. A discourse of victimization evolved among the soldiers in which their apparent weakness—which they claimed to be a result of their meatless diet—became the justification for institutional and personal abuse inflicted on the Palestinian prisoners. The chapter also shows the intimate realties of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and exposes some of the implicit mechanisms that maintain a sense of victimization among Israeli Jews.

Historical research report on the external architectural surfaces of the fortress of San LeoThe hinterland of Rimini is characterized by the presence of many castles, but the fortress of San Leo is certainly the most representative because of its position and the different constructive contributions that over time have updated its appearance and military functions. Cited by Dante and Machiavelli for the impervious nature on which it stands, its origin dates back to the early Middle Ages. It was rehashed following the imprint of Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century, restored by

Sexual violence experienced during military service can have lasting negative psychosocial effects on veterans long after service ends. Current research reports veterans who have experienced military sexual violence are more likely to develop mental health and substance use disorders. Little is known, though, about the relationship between military sexual violence and subsequent cannabis use disorder (CUD). The current study investigated prevalence of military sexual violence among a large sample of OEF/OIF veterans (N = 1,005), its effect on later CUD, and the potential moderating role of res

The repertoire for the marching band has its specificity, determined by the instrumental composition, the type of orchestra: military or civilian, the context of the performance. It includes both original opuses and transcriptions. The orchestration technique reflects all these aspects, and the authors of the works and arrangements will consider the timbre features, the possibilities of combining different instruments, the application of dynamic elements, the ways of creating/reproducing the chordal, polyphonic, melodic texture, which will harmonize and reflect the whole sound picture of the m

ABSTRACT Background: The strenuous duties of emergency responders (police officers andmilitary personnel) may interact with their personal risk profiles, including elevated blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes mellitus to precipitate acute cardiovascular events. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between obesity, diabetes melitus, and hypertension in police and military personnel using meta-analysis. Subjects and Method: This was a meta-analysis and systematic review. The articles which published from year 2000 to 2020 were obtained from Google Scholar, Springer Lin

Background: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease linked to tau protein associated with recurrent brain trauma, clinically marked by mood, personality, cognitive and behavioral changes. Objectives: The objective of the study was to demonstrate whether athletes and military personnel can really be victims of CTE and to elucidate this same pathology. Design and setting: This is a systematic review, based on the PRISMA guidelines and a literature review with a summary of the evidence found. Predicting the energy costs of human travel over snow can be of significant value to the military and other agencies planning work efforts when snow is present. The ability to quantify, and predict, those costs can help planners determine if snow will be a factor in the execution of dismounted tasks and operations. To adjust predictive models for the effect of terrain, and more specifically for surface conditions, on energy costs, terrain coefficients (ƞ) have been developed. By applying knowledge gained from prior studies of the effects of terrain and snow, and by leveraging those existing di

This report illustrates the populist performance of the Ukrainian crisis and how Radical Right populists across Europe may have seized the opportunity of the war to instrumentalize war-related economic anxieties and propagate anti-elite and anti-establishment rhetoric. Emphasizing domestic socioeconomic issues did not preclude populist Radical Right parties from using the war as an opportunity to reinforce nationalist sentiment and national pride. Many parties drew parallels between the heroism and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people in defending their nation and nationalist attitudes and devoti
