With the increasing turn to celibacy for monks and priests over the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, one avenue for performing masculinity – sexual prowess and the engendering of children – closed for monks and priests. Jacqueline Murray explores the ways in which the myth of uncontrollable male lust became deployed to enable clerics to redefine masculinity: instead of actual battle, these second sons of the military aristocracy displayed strength and prowess through fighting lust; instead of actual sexual prowess, “real men” could demonstrate masculinity through rationally controlling sexual

The subject of the study is an iron dagger with a gold hilt and a gold scabbard, found during excavations of the Gorgippia necropolis in a rich burial in the second half of the second century A.D. The sheath and hilt of the dagger are decorated in a polychrome animal style characteristic of the Sarmatian world. Daggers similar in shape and decoration were found in the graves of the highest Sarmatian nobility – Dachy and Tillya-Tepe. It is possible that the Gorgippian dagger is close to them in time and should be attributed to an earlier period than the one containing its burial. An important e

The last two decades have seen a marked rise in the number of maps in the popular media, yet academic interest in journalistic cartography remains low, though the bulk of the public relies on the media for its geographic knowledge. Because they invoke a sense of belonging, identity, and allegiance, the number of media maps, like flags and other patriotic icons, increases during conflict. From the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan until the proclamation of victory in Iraq almost two years later, three major American news magazines published nearly 200 related maps.
