Abstract:
FEDERALISM AND MILITARY RULE IN NIGERIA This thesis examines the practice of federalism under military rule in Nigeria. The primary objective is to determine to what extent federalism is practicable under military governance. The argument is that military rule and federalism are two fundamentally different concepts of political organisations, and that it is a misnomer to call a military government federal because of the inherent contradictions between the two. The thesis is divided into twelve chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the introduction. Chapter 2 provides the theoretical framework. It exa

In recent years South America has witnessed a wave of transitions from military rule. These military regimes were different from past interventions in that the military came to power with their own agenda, not to specifically support an interest group, and they came to stay. This thesis examines the transition phenomenon from the military perspective, and hypothesize that these militaries chose to transition from power because of a breakdown in 'obligational legitimacy' (a common identity within the military that justifies their right to rule). This affective disciplining extends to the military's relationship with the nation, in which the bodies and families of dead soldiers serve as conduits for communication. The thesis explores service and death in the Pakistani military ethnographically, privileging the lived experiences of subaltern soldiers and their families.

Abstract:
During the Peninsular War (1808-1814) the Spanish launched an unprecedented guerrilla insurgency that undermined Napoleon’s grip on that state. The advent of this novel and illegal “system” of warfare ushered in an era of military studies on the use of unconventional strategies in military campaigns – and changed the modern rules of war. A generation later during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Henry Halleck and Winfield Scott used the knowledge from the Peninsular War to implement an innovative “conciliatory” counterinsurgency program directed at the Mexican people – which set the U.S.

Abstract:
First of all, this thesis aims at understanding, while using the example of Ha

Abstract:
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and

Abstract:
This study examines the performance of the three military regimes that ruled Ghana during the period, 1966 - 1982. The analysis would seem to suggest that, contrary to post-covp rhetoric and expectations, military regimes are, in general, poor economic and political performers. In the field of foreign policy, a rational foreign policy based on an even balance between Ghana's national interest and its actual and potential power eluded the country under the three regimes. The study is exploratory, designed to contribute a better empirical base to the field of study and to formulate a
