Abstract:
The article presents the phenomenon of transformation and its paradigm as well as the transformation in the fields of defence and the military. First, we address border concepts and later define the transformation process and its paradigm with the terms such as consolidation, conversion, modernization, modification, restructuring, reform and reorganization, further on revolution in the military field and re-engineering, and particularly alteration and transformation. In doing so, we procees from the fact that at the end of the Cold War these phenomena of changing have been described in a variety of technical and scientific resources, as well as the defense and military practice with the terms that may be synonymous in describing the same phenomena, but are often used to describe completely different ones, although seeming similar at first. In the debate, we are interested in whether the transformational paradigm is a hybrid; which are the common points of the revolutionary and evolutionary paradigm, and where to place it. Additionally, we provide the findings and observations on the comparison of revolutions in the military sphere and the transformation, all with the aim to enable better understanding of the transformative paradigms and transformation of the armed forces, both nationally and wider. It is important to recognise that the transformational paradigm and its philosophy are still incomplete and insufficiently researched and tested in practice, although important steps have been noted just in the defence and military fields.

Abstract:
The armed forces of NATO, the foundation of military security in the collective and individual sense, have been, for years, constituting the determinants shaping their interoperability and effectiveness. Such actions are taken with varying intensity by all members also in terms of military leadership. The scope and comprehensiveness of these actions mainly oscillate around the perception of leadership in the context of the tool for shaping interpersonal relationships. The goal of the organizational context, which less attention is put to, is the proper section and training of the leaders, who are not accidentally appointed, but were chosen on the basis of a thoughtful process. Therefore, in the area of leadership considered an important organizational phenomenon, a variety of transformations are carried out, which are intended to improve leadership and the units implementing them, so it is used for the benefit of the armed forces. The Polish armed forces have also undertaken such actions. Their scope is to be based on a broad analysis of leadership in conducted in 2018. However, ensuring the optimization of further action requires the recognition of the most significant leadership transformations that have been implemented by the Alliance’sleading armed forces and are a guarantor of substantially higher quality of military leadership. These transformations are described and discussed in this paper.

Lee, Soon Ho. "Military transformation on the Korean Peninsula : technology versus geography." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5360.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an explanation of one RMA issue: the effectiveness of contemporary military technology against tough geography, based upon case studies in the Korean peninsula. The originality of the thesis is that it will provide a sound insight for potential foes’ approach to the dominant US military power (superior technology and sustenance of war). The North Korean defence strategy – using their edge in geography and skill – tried to protect themselves from the dominant US power, but it may be impossible to deter or defeat them with technological superiority alone. This research also provides a valuable example, through Stephen Biddle’s technology and skill theory, which claims that, in the future of war, the skills of the unit (tactical readiness) are as important as the technology involved. By examining three case studies, the thesis aims to reveal that technological superiority alone cannot guarantee military success against the foe that possesses the geographic advantage and the capability to use its benefits. The first case study of the Imjin Wars will examine the significance of geography and capability to using the geographic edge in the Korean peninsula. The second case study of the Korean War will examine how technology alone failed to overcome the skilled and geographically advantageous defenders in modern warfare. Finally, by examining possible conflict scenarios of US-ROK alliance and North Korea, this research will seek to prove that contemporary military technology alone would not guarantee military success and deterrence against North Korea, which is both geographically advantaged and highly skilled. Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>A "Bold Case for Unconventional Warfare" argues for the establishment of a new branch of service, with the sole responsibility of conducting Unconventional Warfare. The thesis statement is: Unconventional Warfare is a viable tool for achieving national security objectives under certain circumstances. Hypothesis One states that in order for UW to be effective it must be managed in accordance with specific principles. Hypothesis Two states that to optimize UW a new branch of service under the Department of Defense is required. Chapter II establishes the strategic requirement, laying the foundation by explaining the differences between UW and conventional warfare. Chapter III explains the requirements for dealing with substate conflicts. Chapter IV articulates the operational construct for UW revolving around an indigenous-based force in order for the US to gain influence in a targeted population. The second half of this thesis, Chapters V - VI, analyzes policy, doctrine, and schooling, as well as case studies of USSF efforts in the Vietnam War and El Salvador in order to reveal a conventional military aversion to the use of UW. The conceptual discussion of Chapters I thru IV supported by the research of Chapters V and VI together make "A Bold Case for UW."<br>Captain, United States Army<br>Major, United States Army

Jones, Cherlyn Heather Tee. "Warrior/shaman| Creative praxis for conflict transformation." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3726313.

Abstract:
<p> The purpose of this artistic self-case study is to explore how the role of the soldier might be transformed from service <i>in war</i> to service <i>for community,</i> via creative exploration of the archetypal figures, Warrior and Shaman. With this in mind, a creative and introspective method was tested for its efficacy in generating new images and stories to promote conflict transformation for our warrior class. </p><p> The strategy of inquiry employed is based on the case study model, modified to be a self-case study. Creation-based data was generated by the researcher to evoke intersubjective dialogue between academically rational and creatively nonrational data and processes in this research. In lieu of the traditional written chapters that comprise the body of a dissertation, &ldquo;creative chapters&rdquo; in the form of mixed media pictorial representations are presented. Data analysis was conducted using Abt&rsquo;s (2005) articulation of Jungian picture interpretation, in order to discern meaning from each creative chapter&mdash;the titles of which served as a query for topics related to the research question. </p><p> A liberation paradigm was then utilized as a critical point of departure, to guide the issues examined (healing and community roles for our warrior class), the people for whom the study is relevant (the warrior class and practitioners working with them), the researcher&rsquo;s role in the study (up front/personal; grounded in experience), and how the research was presented in its final form (written text with supporting pictorial data; conclusions drawn from creative interpretation). </p><p> The combined chapter interpretations were reviewed and analyzed in the concluding chapter for their implications in community praxis with returning soldiers and veterans. They revealed consistent themes of imbalanced masculine and feminine energies, and the need for development of an introspective, Shamanic aptitude by our Warriors in order for them to continue their duty of protection and care of their local communities. </p><p> Recommendations are then made for adapting this research model in community work with soldiers and veterans, along with suggestions for building greater levels of reliability, validity, and generalizability into creative qualitative research. </p><p> Keywords: Warrior, Shaman, trauma, conflict transformation, resilient communities, Jungian, phronesis, counterinsurgency, initiation, creative.</p>

Abstract:
Large-scale transformational change, such as the integration and acceptance of gays in the U.S. military, necessitates a long-term effort by management to mitigate unanticipated consequences. Suboptimal implementation may not account for damaging consequences among individuals expected to live the change. The purpose of this autoethnographic study was to examine the individual experiences of a closeted gay personnel member living through a transformational change in identity, which paralleled an organizational change in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The conceptual framework included elements of general systems theory, Kotter's theory of change management, Ostroff's change management for government, and Maslow's self-actualization theory. Data collection included logs, notes, journals, field notes, and recollections of experiences, conversations, and events connecting the autobiographical story to organizational change. Data were coded and analyzed to identify themes. Data analysis entailed triangularization using the largest DoD survey of that time, and public records of military personnel who participated in lawsuits against the DoD or opined about the policy. While the organization was transforming to allow openly gay individuals to remain in the military, findings showed that nearly half of those who offered opinions predicted that openly gay servicemembers would get beat up or abused. Findings showed the process of transformational change allowed those impacted to make their own sense of the change, and knowing whether someone was gay mattered. Findings may be used by sexual minorities and other subgroups to engage in sensemaking activities to promote transformational change initiatives.

Abstract:
This study investigates and proves the continuity between Tsarist, Soviet, and current Russian military thought which is predicated on the twin conceptual pillars of <I>voennyi nauk</I> (military science) and <I>buduschchaia voina</I> (future war); identifies the integral military-civilian commission consensus/decision process; defines the context for Aleksandr Svechin's 1920s works; and contributes original General Staff source materials. The continuity of process for developing Russian military doctrine is documented in three parts: 1) The <I>Imperial Russian Army Reforms 1856 to 1914</I> are linked with the issues of forming and training a standing "professional" conscript army that first became significant in the mid-19th century. The Ridiger and Miliutin Reforms advanced the process of creating a modern Russian military establishment in the wake of humiliating Russian defeats in the Crimean War (1853-56) and the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) 2) Lessons from the <I>The 1921-1923 Interregnum, and the 1924-1930 Frunze</I> <I>Reforms</I> are pertinent due to the striking economic and geo-political similarities between this time period and the present Russian situation. For a decade up to 1930 within the Red Army there transpired an open debate - the first and only such open debate for nearly 60 years - about the nature of <I>Budushchaia voina</I>. 3) <I>Findings: Past, Present, Future</I> investigates the nature of the current Russian <I>Budushchaia voina</I> concept which must reflect the vastly altered political-military, geo-strategic, social, economic, and technological situation in which Russia finds itself in the aftermath of the December 1991 disbanding of the Soviet Union; and then project into the 21st Century the type of threats, the most likely nature of warfare, and hence the deployed military force structure required to defend Russia.
