Terrestrial mobile peer-to-peer millimeter wave networks will likely use beamforming arrays with narrow beams. Aligning narrow beams is difficult. One consideration for aligning narrow beams is co-channel interference. Beams can be aligned either on a per-link basis where co-channel interference is ignored, or on a global basis where co-channel interference is considered. One way to align beams on a global basis is coordinated beamforming. Coordinated beamforming can be defined as alignment of beams on a global basis, so as to jointly optimize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)

Millimeter-wave systems introduce a set of particular severe requirements from the antenna point of view in order to achieve specific performances. In this sense, high directive antennas are required to overcome the huge extra path loss. Moreover, each particular application introduces additional requirements. For example, in very high throughput (VHT) wireless personal area networks (WPANs) communication systems at 60 GHz band beam-steering antennas are needed to deal with high user random mobility and human-body shadowing characteristic of indoor environments. Similarly, beam-steering capabi

This thesis contributes to the development and characterization of millimetre-wave personal area networks (WPANs) in the 60 GHz frequency band. Single-carrier and multi carrier transmission techniques are considered in the implementation of a 64.8 GHz WPAN capable of achieving a reliable indoor link. Thus, single-carrier with frequency domain equalization (SC- FDE) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication schemes were designed and implemented to mitigate the multi path fading of the 60 GHz indoor channels. As a result, a complete millimetre-wave transceiver operating

Design techniques and procedures to improve performances of radio-frequency and millimeter-wave front-end integrated circuits were developed. Power amplifiers for high data-rate wireless communication applications were designed using CMOS technology employing a novel device resizing and concurrent power-combining technique to implement a multi-mode operation. Comprehensive analysis on the efficiency degradation effect of multi-input-single-output combining transformers with idle input terminals was performed. The proposed discrete resizing and power-combining technique effectively enhanced the
