Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a case study which describes reference and instruction outreach programs promoted by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Library. Direct‐2‐U Reference, Crash Courses, and Drop‐In Tours reached out to students in innovative ways to encourage non‐library users to see what they were missing and to give current library users even more choices. Direct‐2‐U Reference provided opportunities for students to get research help on their own turf. Librarians offered assistance at several locations across campus, combining the benefits of face‐to‐face reference with the convenience of getting help without going to the physical library. Library Crash Courses promoted subject‐specific assistance without the formality of in‐class instruction. Drop‐In Tours allowed curious students to figure out the layout of the library and get answers to their questions.Design/methodology/approachThis case study describes researching alternative services, and includes practical information on how services were implemented. Information is presented about ongoing evaluation of the outreach programs that improved the direction, marketing, and overall success of the programs.FindingsThe outreach programs promoted by the library reached additional users, provided more options for patrons, and improved the visibility of the library campus‐wide.Originality/valueThis case study will be of interest to other academic librarians wanting to provide library services outside the library. It builds on the existing literature regarding library outreach services.

Abstract:
Mary Antin was not modest in her use of the possessive case in The Promised Land — in her iterations of Mine, Mine, Mine. While still a schoolgirl, Antin asserted that everything she saw in the Boston Public Library, a “treasure house” of wisdom and art, was “Mine.” As the child of a newly naturalized American, she felt entitled to claim possession; the library and its treasured holdings were “Mine,” she said, “because I was a citizen; mine, though I was born an alien; mine … My palace — mine! … This is mine” (266, original emphasis). By the time Antin came to the soaring conclusion of The Promised Land, she had exchanged her natural (and naturalized) father for the country's Founding Father, and as the child of George Washington, she claimed as her “heritage” everything in human evolutionary history that had led to the creation of America and everything yet to be evolved. “I am the youngest of America's children,” she wrote, “and into my hands is given all her priceless heritage … Mine is the whole majestic past, and mine is the shining future” (286). In swooping hyperbole, Antin equated American citizenship with possession, and possession with inheritance, property, and rights: with a treasure house in which she “had a right to be … at home” (266).

Abstract:
The prokaryotic community composition, species diversity and the distribution patterns at various taxonomic levels in a salt lake (Chaka salt lake), solar salterns (Taipei saltworks and Dongfang saltworks), and salt mines (Yuanyongjing salt mine, Xiangyan salt mine, and Dinyuan salt mine) were investigated using clone library or Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The clone library approach revealed that the salt lake harbors low species diversity (H’ = 0.98) as compared to the solar saltern (H’ = 4.36) and salt mine (H’ = 3.57). The dominant group in the salt lake is a species from the genus Haloparvum which constitutes about 85% of the total sequences analyzed. The species diversities in salt salterns and salt mines are richer than in the salt lake, and the dominant group is less significant in terms of total percentage. High-throughput sequencing showed that geographical isolation greatly impacted on the microbial community (phyla level) and species diversity (operational taxonomic units (OTUs) level) of salt mines. Species of the genus Natronomonas are found in all three types of environments investigated. In addition, the microbial community and species diversity of different stratums of the salt mine are very similar. Furthermore, species of the genus Halorubrum flourish in the newest stratum of salt mine and have become the dominant group. This study provides some new knowledge on the species diversity and prokaryotic community composition of three typical hypersaline environments.

this paper expounds to mine up data with the DBSCAN algorithm in order to help teachers and students find which books they expect in the sea of library. In the first place, the model that DBSCAN algorithm applies in library data miner is proposed, followed by the DBSCAN algorithm improved on demands. In the end, an experiment is cited herein to validate this algorithm. The results show that the book price and the inventory level in the library produce a less impact on the resultant aggregation than the classification of books and the frequency of book borrowings. Library procurers should therefore purchase and subscribe data based on the results from cluster analysis thereby to improve hierarchies and structure distribution of library resources, forging on the library resources to be more scientific and reasonable, while it is also conducive to arousing readers' borrowing interest.

The Internet affords the librarian many opportunities to enhance reference services. Online reference tools such as library catalogs, specialized indexes, directories, dictionaries, etc. provide access to bibliographic information, organizational information, and information about the net itself. In addition to the information resources available on the net, its communications power facilitates exchange of information and efficient use of expertise. Although finding specific information on the net can sometimes be a problem, due to the quantity of data and the net’s rapid expansion, search tools are being developed to mine the riches of the Internet. Full text
Abstract:
Purpose The paper aims to understand the book subscription characteristics of the students at each college and help the library administrators to conduct efficient library management plans for books in the library. Unlike the traditional association rule mining (ARM) techniques which mine patterns from a single data set, this paper proposes a model, recency-frequency-college (RFC) model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users and then discovers interesting association rules from equivalence-class RFC segments. Design/methodology/approach A framework which integrates the RFC model and ARM technique is proposed to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users. First, the author applies the RFC model to determine library users’ RFC values. After that, the author clusters library users’ transactions into several RFC segments by their RFC values. Finally, the author discovers RFC association rules and analyses book subscription characteristics of RFC segments (library users). Findings The paper provides experimental results from the survey data. It shows that the precision of the frequent itemsets discovered by the proposed RFC model outperforms the traditional approach in predicting library user subscription itemsets in the following time periods. Besides, the proposed approach can discover interesting and valuable patterns from library book circulation transactions. Research limitations/implications Because RFC thresholds were assigned based on expert opinion in this paper, it is an acquisition bottleneck. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to automatically infer the RFC thresholds from the library book circulation transactions. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the library administrators in conducting library book management plans for different library users. Originality/value This paper proposes a model, the RFC model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users.

The androgenic gland (AG), playing an important role in sex differentiation of male crustacean, is a target candidate to understand the mechanism of male development and to mine male-specific sex markers. An SSH library (designated as male reproduction-related tissues—SSH library, MRT-SSH library for short) was constructed using cDNA from tissues located at the basal part of the 5th pereiopods, including AG and part of spermatophore sac, as tester, and the cDNA from the basal part of the 4th pereiopods of these male shrimp as driver. 402 ESTs from the SSH library were sequenced and assembled into 48 contigs and 104 singlets. Twelve contigs and 14 singlets were identified as known genes. The proteins encoded by the identified genes were categorized, according to their proposed functions, into neuropeptide hormone and hormone transporter, RNA posttranscriptional regulation, translation, cell growth and death, metabolism, genetic information processing, signal transduction/transport, or immunity-related proteins. Eleven highly expressed contigs in the SSH library were selected for validation of the MRT-SSH library and screening sex markers of shrimp. One contig, specifically expressed in male shrimp, had a potential to be developed as a transcriptomic sex marker in shrimp.

Abstract:
Libraries are widely used by government, universities, research institutes, and the public since they are storing and managing intellectual assets. The library information directly stored in libraries and about the people interaction with libraries can be transformed into accessible data which then will be used by researchers to help library better serve users. Librarians need to understand how to transform, analyze, and present data in order to facilitate such knowledge creation. For example, the challenges they face include how to make big datasets more useful, visible and accessible. Fortunately, with new and powerful analytics of big data, such as information visualization tools, researchers/users can look at data in new ways and mine it for information they intend to have. Moreover, interaction of users and stored information has been taken into librarian's consideration to improve library service quality. In this work, the authors discuss the characteristics of datasets in library and argue against a popular confusion that data involved in library research is not big enough, conduct a review for the research work on library big data and then summarize the applications and research directions in this field. The status of big data research in library in China is discussed. The challenges associated with it are also discussed and explored.

We propose a discriminative and compact scene descriptor for single-view place recognition that facilitates long-term visual SLAM in familiar, semi-dynamic, and partially changing environments. In contrast to popular bag-of-words scene descriptors, which rely on a library of vector quantized visual features, our proposed scene descriptor is based on a library of raw image data (such as an available visual experience, images shared by other colleague robots, and publicly available image data on the Web) and directly mine it to find visual phrases (VPs) that discriminatively and compactly explain an input query/database image. Our mining approach is motivated by recent success achieved in the field of common pattern discovery – specifically mining of common visual patterns among scenes – and requires only a single library of raw images that can be acquired at different times or on different days. Experimental results show that, although our scene descriptor is significantly more compact than conventional descriptors, its recognition performance is relatively high.

Abstract:
In the digital information age, data mining technology is becoming more widely used in libraries for its useful impact. In the context of big data, how to efficiently mine big data, extract features, and provide users with high-quality personalized service is one of the important issues that needs to be solved in the current university library big data application. Brain computing is a kind of comprehensive processing behavior of the human brain simulated by the computer, which can comprehensively analyze a variety of information and play a very good guiding role in processing library service behavior. This paper briefly introduces the related concepts and algorithms of data mining technology and deeply studies the classical algorithm of association rules, namely, Apriori algorithm, which analyzes the necessity and feasibility of applying data mining technology to university library management. The design idea and functional goal of the college book intelligent recommendation system are based on the decision tree method and association rule analysis method. Through the application research of data mining technology in the personalized service of the university library, combined with the actual work, this paper proposes data mining of association rules in the university library system. The research further elaborates on the system architecture, data processing, mining implementation algorithms, and application of mining results. The experimental results of the research have certain significance for the university library to explore personalized services, provide book recommendation services, and make corresponding decisions to optimize the library’s collection layout.

Furthermore, taking advantage of the information of the depth map, the interface of hand gesture recognition is established for human machine interaction of rescue robot. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of Kinect-based vision system as a feasible and alternative technology for HMI of mine rescue robot.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the use of three-dimensional mapping software SolidWorks as a platform to build a parametric model of coal mine filling equipment and a model library of the equipment. The Solidworks software is used to create a near-realistic virtual environment to simulate and analyze the process of building a high-water filling station. In this way, designers can detect potential design flaws early and then optimize the design as much as possible before actual construction.

Abstract:
In this article, the authors argue that the lessons learned from the increasing closures of corporate li- braries that began in the 1980s can be applied to the wider library community. These closures have accelerated since the 1990s due to corporate cost cutting measures and the ever increasing availability of internet services that bypass the information professional. Above all, the authors argue that corporate librarians have often failed to align their services to the priorities of the companies they serve. This has resulted in their institutional marginalization and the eventual closure of the library. The authors make the case that, among other types of libraries, the sacrosanct place of the academic library at the center of the university is not guaranteed. The information era with its vast digital resources has and will under- mine the physical assets of traditional libraries as well as the customary role of librarians who staff them. Academic librarians will increasingly be expected to show administrators that their services are aligned to their institution’s strategic priorities and that their libraries are providing added value to its customers, namely, the students, faculty and staff of their college or university. If they do not do so, they very well may face, in the not so distant future, what may now seem unimaginable –the reduction or closure of the academic library in favor of customer-accessed digital information services.

With the application of the Internet of things and cloud computing technology, a large-scale production, sharing and application data age is gradually open, it will give the technical and commercial to be changed, also will change our way of the life. If the data is stored, it is always a pile of meaningless numbers, but if using the technology to realize data value, analyzes the data from the produce to the mining, finally consumed the entire process, only by making data, to make data services to the public. This paper will use the big data technology to mine, identify, organize and analyze the implied reader behavior in the structured and semi-structured data information, to search for readers of the implicit demand to improve the library service, resources, services, and reader demand and achieve the optimum configuration.

Abstract:
Abstract. Mineral resource exploration and mining is an essential part of today's high-tech industry. Elements such as rare-earth elements (REEs) and copper are, therefore, in high demand. Modern exploration techniques from multiple platforms (e.g., spaceborne and airborne), to detect and map the spectral characteristics of the materials of interest, require spectral libraries as an essential reference. They include field and laboratory spectral information in combination with geochemical analyses for validation. Here, we present a collection of REE- and copper-related hyperspectral spectra with associated geochemical information. The libraries contain reflectance spectra from rare-earth element oxides, REE-bearing minerals, copper-bearing minerals and mine surface samples from the Apliki copper–gold–pyrite mine in the Republic of Cyprus. The samples were measured with the HySpex imaging spectrometers in the visible and near infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) range (400–2500 nm). The geochemical validation of each sample is provided with the reflectance spectra. The spectral libraries are openly available to assist future mineral mapping campaigns and laboratory spectroscopic analyses. The spectral libraries and corresponding geochemistry are published via GFZ Data Services with the following DOIs: https://doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.1.4.2019.004 (13 REE-bearing minerals and 16 oxide powders, Koerting et al., 2019a), https://doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.1.4.2019.003 (20 copper-bearing minerals, Koellner et al., 2019), and https://doi.org/10.5880/GFZ.1.4.2019.005 (37 copper-bearing surface material samples from the Apliki copper–gold–pyrite mine in Cyprus, Koerting et al., 2019b). All spectral libraries are united and comparable by the internally consistent method of hyperspectral data acquisition in the laboratory.

Abstract:
Microbial diversity associated with uranium mine areas of Jaduguda, India has been investigated using a culture independent molecular approach. Soil samples collected from existing and proposed mine sites were analyzed for physicochemical parameters. Community DNA was extracted from five samples. Small subunit rRNA gene (16S rRNA) was PCR amplified using bacterial primers. The diversity of the total bacterial community was described at molecular level by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). Dominant bacterial groups (represents by OTUs) selected by ARDRA were identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA genes. From the bacterial rDNA clone library around 230 clones were used for further analysis. The unique OTUs and number of clones representing such OTUs were determined. Dominant OTUs were sequenced and identified. These phylotypes spanned a wide range within the bacterial domain occupying Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria as major phyla. About 46 % of clones sequenced from various sites were identified as Proteobacteria. The present findings on microbial diversity at the molecular level are the first of its kind for uranium mine sites of India. Around 20 % of the clone sequences showed little affiliation with known taxa and probably represent new organisms adapted to this habitat.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The acid waters (pH 2.7 to 3.4) originating from the Carnoulès mine tailings contain high concentrations of dissolved arsenic (80 to 350 mg · liter−1), iron (750 to 2,700 mg · liter−1), and sulfate (2,000 to 7,500 mg · liter−1). During the first 30 m of downflow in Reigous creek issuing from the mine tailings, 20 to 60% of the dissolved arsenic is removed by coprecipitation with Fe(III). The microbial communities along the creek have been characterized using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and 16S rRNA gene library analyses. The results indicate a low bacterial diversity in comparison with unpolluted water. Eighty percent of the sequences obtained are related to sequences from uncultured, newly described organisms or recently associated with acid mine drainage. As expected owing to the water chemistry, the sequences recovered are mainly related to bacteria involved in the geochemical Fe and S cycles. Among them, sequences related to uncultured TrefC4 affiliated with Gallionella ferruginea, a neutrophilic Fe-oxidizing bacterium, are dominant. The description of the bacterial community structure and its dynamics lead to a better understanding of the natural remediation processes occurring at this site.

Abstract:
A special collection of German, Polish, and Russian language books, maps and reports in the US Geological Survey Library has an interesting and unusual history. The so-called ‘Heringen Collection’ came from Nazi Germany. Many of these items were captured from libraries, offices and even private homes as the German Army advanced into neighboring countries. In the last days of the war, these maps, reports, photos and other records were sent from the Military Geology offices in Berlin to the safety of a deep potash mineshaft in Heringen (Werra), in Hessen, Germany. A group of US Army soldiers found these lost records of the Third Reich. When removed from the Heringen mine, those records that dealt with the earth sciences, terrain analysis, military geology and other geological matters were sent to the USGS, and eventually came to reside at the USGS Library. The printed papers and books were mostly incorporated into the main collection, but a portion of the materials have never been cataloged, calendared or indexed. These materials have many current uses, including projects of value to citizens in their nations of origin.

Abstract:
Abstract Motivation The Protein Data Bank (PDB) currently holds over 140 000 biomolecular structures and continues to release new structures on a weekly basis. The PDB is an essential resource to the structural bioinformatics community to develop software that mine, use, categorize and analyze such data. New computational biology methods are evaluated using custom benchmarking sets derived as subsets of 3D experimentally determined structures and structural features from the PDB. Currently, such benchmarking features are manually curated with custom scripts in a non-standardized manner that results in slow distribution and updates with new experimental structures. Finally, there is a scarcity of standardized tools to rapidly query 3D descriptors of the entire PDB. Results Our solution is the Lemon framework, a C++11 library with Python bindings, which provides a consistent workflow methodology for selecting biomolecular interactions based on user criterion and computing desired 3D structural features. This framework can parse and characterize the entire PDB in <10 min on modern, multithreaded hardware. The speed in parsing is obtained by using the recently developed MacroMolecule Transmission Format to reduce the computational cost of reading text-based PDB files. The use of C++ lambda functions and Python bindings provide extensive flexibility for analysis and categorization of the PDB by allowing the user to write custom functions to suite their objective. We think Lemon will become a one-stop-shop to quickly mine the entire PDB to generate desired structural biology features. Availability and implementation The Lemon software is available as a C++ header library along with a PyPI package and example functions at https://github.com/chopralab/lemon. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Abstract:
First, the essential biographical information. Born in London on 26 July 1934, Anthony Gilbert was a relative latecomer to composition. Not until he was 19 did he start to study part time at Trinity College and not until he was 23, by which time he was working as a translator and interpreter at the London offices of the Société des Fonderies de Pont-à-Mousson of Nancy, did he begin to study composition, largely as a private pupil, with Anthony Milner, Mátyás Seiber and Alexander Goehr. It is a mark of Gilbert's determination that for the next ten years, while working in a variety of both non-musical (warehouseman and accounts clerk) and musical jobs (free-lance copyist, proof-reader and arranger) for Schotts, and full-time Music and Record Library Assistant at the City of Westminster Public Library, he not only devoted his summer holidays to studying at Dartington and Wardour Castle (with, amongst other teachers, Nono and Berio) but also found time to produce a whole series of works, including an unpublished Elegy for Piano, a Duo for violin and viola, the Piano Sonata No.1, Serenade, the Missa Brevis and the Sinfonia.
