Smee, Peter E. H. "Issues affecting the utility of computer-based mapping applications." Thesis, Open University, 1995. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54425/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis records an investigation of the issues that affect the utility of computer-based mapping applications - where a computer-based mapping application provides a computer-generated environment to facilitate the construction of concept maps. 'Concept map' is a term used to describe a graphical representation, the purpose of which is to informally express ideas and the associations between ideas, whilst facilitating the generation and sorting of ideas. The work reported is the first of its kind to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the different media with which concept maps can be constructed. The work is exploratory, combining investigation with software development. A brief overview of the content of the work completed is as follows: • The literature relating to concept mapping was reviewed to identify the likely needs of those engaged in mapping activities. • A significant sample of people was surveyed in order to ascertain the perceived needs of those engaged in mapping. • The software currently available to draw maps was surveyed in order to assess the utility of computer-based mapping applications, with respect to the perceived needs of mappers. • A prototype computer-based mapping application was developed to act as a focus for mappers' comments. • As a result of feedback from users of the prototype computer-based mapping application, it was discovered that the main way in which people create maps is to generate and sort a few ideas at a time. • The prototype software was further developed, as a result of feedback from mappers, . and in its final form has been made available in the public domain. • A glossary of terms was developed, by which the designers and users of computer-based mapping applications can assess the utility of any given piece of software, in the light of the tasks mappers wish to achieve.

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺中教育大學
教育學系課程與教學碩士班
101
The purpose of this research was to explore the effectiveness of implementing mind mapping into teaching of story rewriting. Furthermore, this research also aimed to find out difficulties and solutions to the problems of story rewriting among students, and the change in ability of students in story rewriting. The method used in this research was action research, and the subjects were 27 fifth grade students of the researcher’s class in elementary school. The research lasted for 16 weeks, which included thirty-two periods of classes. The materials collected emphasized on qualitative data, such as videos recording of teaching, researcher’s journal, interviews and surveys of students’ opinion, suggestions from other teachers, students’ works, written assessments and feedbacks from the parents. The quantitative data collected were comparison of grades prior and post research, questionnaire of pilot study, and check list. In order to achieve unbiased results, researcher analyzed both qualitative data and quantitative data carefully. In conclusion, sequencing teaching of mind mapping in story rewriting, such as teacher guidance, team work, and personal creation helped students to apply mind mapping well. Throughout different period, it was essential that the teacher instructed students in brainstorming, cooperation and independence. The most interesting part of the teaching process was that the students loved team work of mind mapping. They could learn to listen and respect each other through group work. Meanwhile, application of inflexible framework of three branches or four branches: the beginning of the story, the process of the story, and the end of the story (and the introduction of the characters) prevented development of creative imagination and did not exhibit obvious improvement in the students’ ability of paragraphing an article. However, familiarity and definite structure of this method allowed students to construct the articles easily. Suggestions regarding method of teaching and research in the future were made based on the conclusion.

This research uses a quasi-experimental design, which means the designation of experiment process methods to the experiment units (the students) is not random. The subjects are from the second grade students of one elementary school, with class as a unit. A total of 50 students from two classes are selected as the experiment group. Another 2 classes, which consist of 44 students, in another school in the same area are selected as the control group. The experimental group use math Mind maps lesson plans whereas the control group use conventional lecture lesson plans. Teaching content consists of three stages: guiding, practice and application. From the understanding of problems of Mind maps methods and learning process of students, this research offers suggestion for improvement and reflection for using Mind Mapping method in second grade classes. Below are key findings acquired from this research: 1.From both mathematic and application problem solving test result, Mind Mapping and conventional teaching method does not demonstrate a statistical significant difference in learning efficiency. However, in terms of average score, the experiment group obviously is better than the control group. Thus we know though Mind maps method does not have statistically significant efficiency in learning, but actually it still has a greater effect. 2.There is significant correlation between Calculation Problems score and Application questions score.
