Madzivire, Godfrey. "Chemistry and speciation of potentially toxic and radioactive elements during mine water treatment." University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4585.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>Mine water poses a serious environmental challenge and contains elements such as Fe, Al, and Mn in potentially toxic concentrations. The major anion in mine water is sulphate. The complexity and diversity of mine water composition makes its treatment very expensive, and there is no “one-fits-all” treatment option available for mine water. Active treatment of mine water produces water with good quality but the processes are not sustainable because of the costs. Previous studies have shown that acid mine drainage can be treated with coal FA to produce better quality

Hunt, Joseph Edward. "Evaluation of Leachate Chemistry from Coal Refuse Blended and Layered with Fly Ash." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36050.

Full text
Abstract:
Alkaline fly ash has been studied as a liming agent within coal refuse fills to reclaim acid-forming refuse. Previous studies focused on bulk blending ash with acid-forming (pyritic) refuse. A better representation of field conditions is a â pancake layerâ of ash above the refuse. A column study was initiated to evaluate the leachate chemistry from acid-forming refuse-ash bulk blends vs. ash over refuse layers. An acidic and an alkaline ash were blended with, or layered over, acid-forming refuse and sandstone and packed into columns which were leached with deionized water twice a week fo

Abstract:
Acid mine drainage is of growing concern for both developing and developed economies. Thus there is increasing pressure to develop alternative remediation strategies. Biological sulphidogenic mechanisms have long since been studied but, very few have been implemented on a large scale. Limitations are due to the inability to acquire a suitable, low cost, environmentally friendly, renewable carbon source. The present study investigated the use of an algae biomass generated by the HRAOP of an IAPS as a carbon source for the EBRU 00AB/06 SRB consortium. The algae biomass and consortium were utiliz

Abstract:
Oxidation of sulfidic mine waste is of significant environmental concern due to the consequent formation of acid rock drainage (ARD), deteriorating the water quality of natural water systems. Iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) are two major redox elements involved in these reactions and typically the major redox-sensitive elements (whose solubility, speciation, and mobility are affected by pH and Eh) in water affected by ARD. Measurements of Fe and S species concentrations may reveal valuable information about geochemical processes in mine waste but are typically included when analyzing the chemical com

Abstract:
An investigation has been carried out to determine the effects of the dissolved solids in process cooling water (pcw) and mine water (mw) on concrete corrosion. An experimental set up was designed to simulate the process in the cooling towers of Sasol (Pty) Ltd at Secunda. The investigation was carried out using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Blastfurnace Cement (PBFC). The corrosion process was monitored as a function of time by determining the concentrations of the ions left in solution. The existence of small-scale gold mining in Nova Scotia between 1868 and 1942 has resulted in many high arsenic (As) tailings areas in the province, some of which are near rural/urban areas and are used for recreational activities such as dirt bike racing and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding. Because of the natural association of As with gold ore in the Meguma Terrane, processing of ore has resulted in As-rich mine waste that contains up to 2500 times more As than the Canadian soil quality guideline of 12 mg/kg. These high As concentrations in combination with the recreational use of these s

One of the most essential resources for life on our planet is water. A concern for water resource sustainability has shifted towards the sustainable development of clean water body resource (SWDF, 2009). Data for the Vaal River water chemistry is in abundance. However, research on the historic natural conditions influencing the inorganic water quality, is not as extensive. Inorganic data was obtained from the Department of Water Affairs, for the period 1972 to 2011, for identified monitoring stations along the Vaal River. Water quality was evaluated using various geochemical techniques to anal
