Abstract This study addresses the resistance to chloride ion penetration in the prestressed concrete large diameter cylinder piles exposed to the severe marine splash/tidal zone. Time to initiation of corrosion was predicted by using the Fick’s 2nd law for chloride penetration. The effects of water to binder ratio (w/b), mineral admixtures, and cover thickness were evaluated by the comparative studies, based on one-dimensional direct calculation, two-dimensional analysis using a computer software application, and case studies. The influences of environmental characteristics, manufacturing proc

Abstract The oil and gas industry is plagued with various flow assurance challenges including the formation of inorganic scale on component surfaces. Much research into scaling and inhibition is now being directed towards surface deposition as fouling on surfaces often causes operational problems and the rates cannot be predicted by consideration of bulk precipitation processes. However, achieving a mechanistic understanding of surface kinetics requires laboratory techniques that offer the ability to control thermodynamic parameters. A novel once-through capillary flow rig design based on the

Abstract The Bureau of Mines investigated the corrosion of carbon steel and high-chromium white iron grinding balls. Electrochemical measurements in an ultrasonic apparatus, used to abrade the ball, demonstrated that pyrite in a test slurry of pH 8 increased the corrosion rate of a steel ball from 27 mils per year (mpy) without pyrite to 80 mpy with pyrite. The rate depended upon pH and the mineral-to-metal surface area ratio (SAR). When magnetite was substituted for pyrite, rates were lower. Abstract In this paper the role of mineral composition was assessed for Air Force Research Laboratory test dust (AFRL), for deposition in a realistic gas turbine engine environment. Experiments were performed on an effusion cooling test article with a coolant flow temperature of 894K and surface temperature of 1144K. Aerosolized dust with a 0–10 μm particle size distribution was delivered to the test article. The mineral recipe of AFRL was altered such that the presence of each of the five components ranged from 0% to 100%, and capture efficiency, hole capture efficiency, blockage per gram, an
