Abstract:
Rotational moulding or rotomoulding is a manufacturing process best suited for producing one-piece, hollow plastic products. The raw materials can be in powder or liquid form with linear polyethylene of varying densities being dominant worldwide. Due to the modest material properties of polyethylene, reinforcement in various forms have been incorporated within the rotomoulded components to improve the performance of these products. With the abundance and eco-friendliness of natural fibre resources, this study has focused on the use of sisal and woodfibres along with linear medium density polye

Rotational moulding (rotomoulding) is one of the fastest growing plastics manufacturing processes using linear polyethylenes dominantly as raw materials. However, due to their modest mechanical properties, rotational moulders worldwide are keen to develop stronger and stiffer materials. In the present study, an attempt was undertaken to apply the concept of microfibril reinforced composites (MFCs) for improving the material performance. The usefulness of rotational moulding (rotomoulding) as a polymer processing technique is often limited by the selection of polymers, which in most cases happens to be polyethylene (PE). In the present study, PE polyethylene was blended with wollastonite microfibres and maleated polyethylene (as a coupling agent) with the purpose of developing an improved material for rotational moulding. The incorporation of wollastonite fibres without any coupling agent improved the tensile strength, but showed a reduction in impact strength. As expected, the most significant enhancement due to wollastonite

Abstract Aiming to further plastics recycling via rotational moulding plastics processing, blends of virgin and recycled polyethylene sourced from post-consumer plastics were developed. Three different kinds of recycled high density polyethylene – from bottles, pipes and mixed household waste – were compounded with virgin medium density polyethylene in an extruder. The ideal amount of recyclate was chosen based upon the impact resistance of different contents (25, 50 and 75%) of recycled plastic with the 50/50 blend found to have the best performance. In this study, wood-plastic composites (WPC) were produced by rotomoulding, to study the effect of fibre content and surface treatment on their properties. Maple wood fibre, with or without surface treatment with maleated polyethylene (MAPE), was used to improve the mechanical properties of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). From the composites produced, a complete morphological and mechanical characterisation was performed. The results showed that MAPE surface treatment improved the fibre-matrix interface quality and the mechanical properties (56% increase in tensile modulus and 60% inc

Natural fibres find their application as a reinforcing agent for polymer composites to obtain parts with improved mechanical properties. Manufacturing of non-metallic products is incorporated with natural fibres for better strength and to reduce cost. Rotational moulding is a process used for the manufacturing of hollow plastic products, especially water tanks, plastic fuel tanks, barrels, kayaks, refrigerated panels, etc. Incorporation of natural fibres to reinforce polymers in rotational moulding process is a tedious task; since there is no control over fibre and polymer powder mixture, whic

Plastics are used more and more in hydraulic systems. The chemical properties of the plastics favour the use of working fluids alternative to mineral oil, e.g. water. The conditions in the manufacturing process, e.g. injection moulding, limit the achievement of high working pressures in the hydraulic elements. Internal leakage reduces the efficiency of the hydraulic pump with plastic gears. The article presents the results of internal leakage tests of a water-supplied hydraulic pump. Gears made of various materials (PPS+GF40 and PEEK) have been used in the research, made by two methods: inject
