In the mines of Guanajuato, Mexico, when miners drill and dynamite for metallic ore, they dislodge other substances. Among these are elements and compounds known as “minerals,” sold and collected in their own right as scientific specimens or aesthetic collectibles. These minerals often fetch thousands of dollars at mineral shows and collector showrooms in Tucson, Arizona and other mineral collecting hubs. In this process, minerals move from byproducts and even waste to highly valued commodities in their own right.

Activation of coal gangue from Yixing was done by the method of addition of calcium during calcination. Structural characteristic and cementitious properties of activated samples were analyzed. And then hydration degree of activated coal gangue cement was studied. The results show that: thermally and chemically added-calcium composite activation method can improve the activity of coal gangue. At 1050°C, more effective silicate minerals may be in activated samples, with which cement system may have a higher degree of hydration. infra-red(IR) spectra shows that large number of new mineral peaks

Samples of mafic intrusive rock were analyzed for their mineralogical and chemical properties. The textural relationship was studied using the petrographic microscope, elemental composition of minerals was determined using the Electron Microprobe and the whole rock chemical analysis was done using the XRF and ICP-MS. The following minerals were observed in order of abundance; pyroxene, amphibole, plagioclase, biotite, opaque minerals, quartz and chlorite, with apatite and zircon occurring as accessory mineral. Two types of pyroxenes were observed; orthopyroxene (hypersthene) and clinopyroxene.

Garnet solid solution is dominated by grossular-andradite series, which demonstrates a significant degree of hydration, mainly for grossular rich garnet cores. In this study, heavy mineral analysis was carried out in different size fractions of the Yellow River sediment to extract its end-members. It shows that heavy mineral contents, species, and compositions vary in different grain sizes. Distribution curve of heavy mineral concentration (HMC) and particle size frequency curve are in normal distribution. In most samples, the size fraction of 4.5–5.0 Φ contains the maximum HMC (18% on average). Heavy mineral assemblages of the Yellow River are featured by amphibole + epidote + limonite + garnet.
