Abstract:
Two artistic competitions in the Metamorphoses, those between the Muses and the daughters of Pierus (5.250–678) and between Arachne and Minerva (6.1–145), are now widely recognised as exploiting familiar generic differentiations. Ovid's treatment of these differentiations is further seen to have a bearing on establishing the elusive poetic identity of the whole poem, and to locate that identity firmly within the Roman response to Alexandrian poetics. The significance of these sections for the literary programme of the Metamorphoses has been persuasively argued by H. Hofmann and E. W. Leach for

After Rome was declared capital of a unified Italy in 1870, the fabric of the semi-rural Papal city was irremediably altered by a vast modernisation and expansion programme. Major new roads were cut through the mediaeval quarters of Trastevere, the Campus Martius and the Suburra; new ministries, hospitals and barracks were constructed; and great swathes of the largely unsettled disabitato were parcelled up for new housing. The zone chosen for the first wave of new buildings was, as E. La Rocca has pointed out, both closest to the main railway station and farthest from the Vatican, stretching f

One of the major goals of mineral science is attaining an understanding of the atomic-scale mechanisms and dynamics of minerals that control their structural transformations as a function of pressure, temperature or chemical composition in the natural environment. Examples of research programmes that sail under this heading include those devoted to observing and modelling the role of phase transformations on controlling mineral microstructures, ordering, elasticity, transport, premelting and exsolution. AbstractObjectiveNutrition interventions are critical to achieve the Millennium Development Goals; among them, micronutrient interventions are considered cost-effective and programmatically feasible to scale up, but there are limited tools to communicate the programme components and their relationships. The WHO/CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) logic model for micronutrient interventions in public health programmes is a useful resource for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of these interventions, which depicts the programme theory and expected relationships bet

The Bjørnesund Project is aimed at an evaluation of the mineral potential of the southernmost part of the municipality of Nuuk, between Bjørnesund and the large glacier Frederikshåb Isblink. One of the reasons that economic mineral deposits were expected to occur in the Bjørnesund area, was the presence of gold anomalies in heavy mineral concentrates from stream sediments (Appel, 1989). Another reason was the presence of anthophyllite-rich zones, presumed to have formed by hydrothermal alteration. At a fairly late stage in the planning of the field programme, the project was enlarged to includ
