On most rehabilitated sites, management controls such as deep ripping, contour mounding and landscaped sub-catchments limit erosion. Despite these measures, severe gully erosion that is anecdotally associated with steep slopes can damage rehabilitated areas and affect downstream drinking water resources. A review of erosion dynamics reveals that gullies develop episodically and in a non-linear manner. They often initiated as a near surface process and are influenced by n

The Kambalda Nickel Mines are a type example of massive nickel sulphide deposits located in the 2.7 Ga Archaean Eastern Goldfields Province, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. Nickel sulphide deposits are hosted in embayments, known as troughs, in the contact between Lunnon Basalt and the overlying Kambalda Komatiite. This contact is structurally complex as a result of several phases of compressive deformation after ore formation. The troughs and the orebodies they host define a linear pattern, trending NNW-SSE sub-parallel to each other and the regional structural trend. This thesis proposes

Abstract:
Little research into historical, architectural and social significance of the picture theatre in pre-television rural Australian society has been undertaken. Taking a New South Wales country area (to represent a microcosm), this thesis records the picture venues and qualitative research material from past patrons and theatre staff. The study 1/. establishes the environment created by a picture theatre 2/. shows that New South Wales was typical of Australia in film attendance before the 1960s 3/. introduces the Central-West subject area, and describes how data was gathered from available record

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Recovery of soil nutrients, microbial populations and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling processes are critical to the success of rehabilitation following major ecosystem disturbance. Bauxite mining represents a major ecosystem disturbance to the jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest in the south-west of Western Australia. Mining has created a mosaic of mined areas in various stages of succession surrounded by non-mined forest areas. Initial site preparations within rehabilitation areas such as contour ripping alter soil structure (creation of mound and furrows) and over t

Abstract:
The Mt. Tom Price Mine, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, has been the site of major iron ore mining since the 1960s by Rio Tinto Iron Ore/Pilbara Iron. The thesis project area covers approximately 121 km², covering the Mt. Tom Price Mining area and the surrounding catchment boundary. The climate in the Pilbara region is arid, with rainfall driven by seasonal cyclonic events, producing 300 mm/year net rainfall on average. The geology of the Mt. Tom Price area consists of a series of banded iron formations (BIF) and shales that are generally low in hydraulic conductivity value

Abstract:
Diesel Particulates (DP) is a growing concern in many industries. This research looks at acute health effects related to DP exposure and how DP is monitored in an underground mine in Western Australia. Results appear to show that higher exposure to DP may in fact be linked to certain acute health issues and that a standardised method of monitoring should be developed. This research provides a basis for further DP related studies.
