The article is devoted to the service of the minesweeper T.252 (T.352) «Olga» on the Black Sea during the First World War, the revolutionary events of 1917 and the beginning of foreign intervention in 1918. The publication is based on the minesweeper’s logbooks. In 1918, these documents were seized by the Germans and are currently stored in the military-history department of the Federal Archive of Germany. The article describes the process of work on the conversion of the mobilized steamship «Olga» into a minesweeper. Thanks to the logbooks, a chronology of the ship’s service, its execution of

We introduce a minesweeper percolation model, in which the system configuration is obtained via an automatic minesweeper process. For a variety of candidate networks with different lattice configurations, our process gives rise to a second-order phase transition. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we identify the critical points implied by giant components. A set of critical exponents are extracted to characterize the nature of the minesweeper percolation transition. The determined universality class shows a clear difference from the traditional percolation transition. A proper mine density of the

Abstract:
In this paper, we introduce a technique for AI generation of the Bullets puzzle, a paper-and-pencil variant of Minesweeper. Whereas traditional Minesweeper can be lost due to the need to guess mine or non-mine positions, our puzzle is fully deducible from a minimal clue set. Puzzle generation is based on analysis and optimization of solutions from a human-like reasoning engine that classifies types of deductions. Additionally, we provide insights to subjective puzzle quality, minimal clue sampling trade-offs, and optimal bullet density.

This thesis explores the challenges associated with designing a Minesweeper solving algorithm. In particular, it considers how to best start a game, various heuristics for handling guesses, and different strategies for making deterministic deductions. The paper explores the single point approach and the constraint satisfaction problem model for playing Minesweeper. I present two novel implementations of both of these approaches called double set single point and connected components CSP. The paper concludes that the coupled subsets CSP model performs the best overall because of its sophisticat

Quantum computing is a young but intriguing field of science. It combines quantum mechanics with information theory and computer science to potentially solve certain formerly computationally expensive tasks more efficiently. Classical computers are based on bits that can take on the value zero or one. The values are distinguished by voltage differences in transistors. Quantum computers are instead based on quantum bits, or qubits, that are represented physically by something that exhibits quantum properties, like for example electrons. Qubits also take on the value zero or one, which could cor

We introduce Limbo, a reasoning system for limited belief. The system features a highly expressive language with first-order quantification, functions and equality, sorts, and introspective belief modalities. Reasoning is based on clause subsumption, unit propagation, and case splits. Decidability and sometimes even tractability is achieved by limiting the number of case splits. We illustrate the practical utility of limited belief with toy examples as well as with the games of Sudoku and Minesweeper.
