Abstract:
Local area networks (LANs) are probably the most flexible and adaptable to customizing communications systems. LANs can virtually fit any location/site requirements. They can be tailored for any number of users, any application type and any cost/performance ratio. LANs can work with small (micro computers), medium (mini computers) and large/complex (mainframe) systems. This great flexibility which is due to several factors like, distributed architecture design, software standards, and hardware independence technology make LANs easy to use in a computer laboratory environment. Currently, many hospitality institutions are investigating the feasibility of using LANs in their computer laboratory. However, LANs are still costly, and sometimes difficult to install.

Abstract: Experimental research in Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is crucial to the evaluation of new architectural proposals that bring named pieces of content as the main element of networks. This thesis presents a new fast prototyping tool for the CCN (Content-Centric Networking) model, Mini-CCNx that aims at filling an existing gap in generally available experimental platforms. Using container-based emulation and resource isolation techniques, Mini-CCNx appears as a flexible, scalable, high-fidelity, and low-cost tool that enables experiments on emulated networks with hundreds of CCN nodes in a commodity laptop. Therefore, this Master's project's main contribution is making Mini-CCNx, the first generic emulator focused on the development and evaluation of new proposals for the CCN model, available. Mini-CCNx is opensource and its documentation is publicly available online so it can be extended by any researcher in the area. This thesis presents 18 experiments using Mini-CCNx, ranging from scalability and coherence analysis to video distribution and routing protocols. The reproduction of real networks behavior using the emulator is also an important contribution because it shows one can use Mini-CCNx to detect flaws in applications or algorithms prior to real testbeds tests, which are certainly more complex and costly when compared to the emulated environment. Finally, Mini-CCNx's low-cost and flexibility indicate it can also be used in teaching activities as a practical ICN and CCN learning tool
Mestrado
Engenharia de Computação
Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of tool support for semi-automatic ontology mapping and merging. Solving this problem contributes to ontology creation and evolution by relieving users from tedious and time-consuming work. This thesis shows that a tool can be built that will take a “mini-ontology” and a “growing ontology” as input and make it possible to produce manually, semi-automatically, or automatically an extended growing ontology as output. Characteristics of this tool include: (1) a graphical, interactive user interface with features that will allow users to map and merge ontologies, and (2) a framework supporting pluggable, semi-automatic, and automatic mapping and merging algorithms.

Abstract:
Predicting which fashion items can compose an outfit is not a trivial task since every person has different preferences based on their experiences, location, etc., determining each personal style. The items that can formulate an outfit have to be compatible, but the compatibility of two products should vary based on the context of the products, where context is defined as the products that we already know that are compatible with them. The authors in [1] introduced a model named Context-Aware-Graph-Convolutional-Network (CA-GCN), where they predict the compatibility among fashion items, by taking into consideration their context, after being trained with full-batch Gradient Descent (GD), making its application more difficult on denser and larger graphs. The authors in [2] have proposed the Cluster-GCN method to train GCN [3] models with mini-batch GD for node classification. We propose a novel model named CA-Cluster-GCN that merges a modified version of the Cluster-GCN with the CA-GCN model. We modify the Cluster-GCN in such a way that we can apply it for link-prediction since the CA-GCN predicts the compatibility among the fashion items by predicting if an edge exists among them. Our CA-Cluster-GCN achieves State-Of-The-Art performance on the public Maryland Polyvore [4] dataset and it outperforms the CA-GCN model on the public Amazon [5, 6] dataset. Additional tests have been performed on the industrial datasets provided by H&M.

Abstract:
Aircraft in the US are equipped with Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs). In emergency situations these beacons are activated, providing a radio signal that can be used to locate the aircraft. Recent developments in UAV technologies have enabled mini-UAVs (5-foot wingspan) to possess a high level of autonomy. Due to the small size of these aircraft they are human-packable and can be easily transported and deployed in the field. Using a custom-built Radio Direction Finder, we gathered readings from a known transmitter and used them to compare various Bayesian reasoning-based filtering algorithms. Using a custom-developed simulator, we were able to test and evaluate filtering and control methods. In most non-trivial conditions we found that the Sequential Importance Resampling (SIR) Particle Filter worked best. The filtering and control algorithms presented can be extended to other problems that involve UAV control and tracking with noisy non-linear sensor behavior.

Van, Groesbeck Raymond V. "The Effects of a Mini-Integrated-Learning System, Traditional Lecture and Drill Instruction, Perceptual Learning Styles, and Gender On Language Mechanics Achievement." NSUWorks, 1993. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/896.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the effects of a MiniIntegrated Learning System (MILS), perceptual learning style, and gender difference on language mechanics achievement. This MILS allows students to correct language errors in a short piece of text, receive hints about the errors, and monitor their own progress. The language mechanics subtest of the California Achievement Test and the Cognitive Skills Inventory were administered to seventy-nine fourth and sixth grade students prior to the experiment. The experimental students worked on the MILS to study language mechanics. Control group students learned the same material through a traditional drill and lecture method. After thirteen weeks an alternate form of the language mechanics subtest of the California Achievement Test was administered. A quasi-experimental design was used to test the effects of the independent variables of MILS, learning style, and gender on the dependent variable of language mechanics. Data were analyzed by employing an analysis of covariance, with scores from the language mechanics pretest as the covariate. Results indicate that the MILS is advantageous for enhancing language mechanics. The effectiveness of the treatment for fostering the development of language mechanics achievement does not seem to be related to perceptual learning style preference or gender.

Abstract:
Šiame darbe išnagrinėtos virtualios mikrokontrolerio programavimo laboratorijos naudojamos kitose mokymo įstaigose, jų realizavimo būdai ir naudojamos technologijos. Palygintos technologijos ir jų galimybės. Išanalizuotos kontrolerio nuotolinio valdymo per internetinės svetainės sąsają, tiesioginio vaizdo perdavimo, vartotojų autentifikavimo, resursų planavimo, duomenų saugojimo realizacijos galimybės. Atsižvelgiant į tyrimų rezultatus, sukurta VL, ne brangesnė už šiuo metu naudojamą laboratorijos priemonių komplektą. Virtuali laboratorija leidžia pilnai realizuoti VDU dėstomų dalykų laboratorinius darbus, pasiekiama nepriklausomai nuo vietos ar laiko. Išspręsta resursų planavimo problema – panaudojant VL vartotojų registraciją bei laiko rezervacijas. Realizuota tiesioginė vaizdo transliacija, kuri palaikoma beveik visų interneto naršyklių. Virtualioje laboratorijoje yra realizuota dviejų analoginių įėjimų simuliacija ir indikacija, 4-ių skaitmeninių įėjimų/išėjimų indikacija, bei 3-jų skaitmeninių įėjimų/išėjimų simuliacija. Turi prijungtą LCD displėjų. VL talpinimui, panaudojus mini kompiuterį Raspberry Pi, ji vartoja tik 5 W energijos. Dėl pasirinktos standartinės kameros bei naudojamos PĮ, TĮ komponentai gali būti pakeisti, nesukeliant didesnių problemų. Raspberry Pi duomenys saugomi SD kortelėje, todėl pasidarius veikiančios sistemos kopiją, galima lengvai ir greitai sukurti kelias laboratorijas.
This paper deals with the investigation of the virtual microcontroller programming laboratories used in other educational institutions, as well as their realization techniques, and technologies used. Technologies and their offered potentials are compared. The possibilities of microcontroller remote control via website interface, live video streaming, user authentication, resource planning, and data storage are examined. Taking into account investigation results, the virtual laboratory has been developed, no more expensive than those currently used in laboratory work equipment kit per student. Virtual Lab allows to fully realize laboratory works of subjects taught at VDU, as it is fully available irrespective of space or time constraints. The issue of resource planning problem was solved using the VL user registration and time booking. Live video broadcasting has been implemented, which is supported by nearly all Internet browsers. Virtual laboratory has 4 digital PIN indicators and 2 analog inputs indicators. VL can simulate 2 analog inputs and 3 digital I/O. It has an LCD connected. VL is hosted using Raspberry Pi mini-computer – it uses only 5 watts of energy. The chosen standard camera and software used enables worn-out parts to be easily replaced while evading any problems. Raspberry Pi data stored on the SD card, thus by making a copy of the working VL, one can create multiple laboratories.

Abstract:
We introduce a quantum neural network, QNN, that can represent labeled data, classical or quantum, and be trained by supervised learning. The quantum circuit consists of a sequence of parameter dependent unitary transformations which acts on an input quantum state. For binary classification a single Pauli operator is measured on a designated readout qubit. The measured output is the quantum neural network’s predictor of the binary label of the input state. We show through classical simulation that parameters can be found that allow the QNN to learn to correctly distinguish the two data sets. We then discuss presenting the data as quantum superpositions of computational basis states corresponding to different label values. Here we show through simulation that learning is possible. We consider using our QNN to learn the label of a general quantum state. By example we show that this can be done. Our work is exploratory and relies on the classical simulation of small quantum systems. The QNN proposed here was designed with near-term quantum processors in mind. Therefore it will be possible to run this QNN on a near term gate model quantum computer where its power can be explored beyond what can be explored with simulation.
