AbstractMinimal predicates P satisfying a given first-order description ϕ(P) occur widely in mathematical logic and computer science. We give an explicit first-order syntax for special first-order ‘PIA conditions’ ϕ(P) which guarantees unique existence of such minimal predicates. Our main technical result is a preservation theorem showing PIA-conditions to be expressively complete for all those first-order formulas that are preserved under a natural model-theoretic operation of ‘predicate intersection’. Next, we show how iterated predicate minimization on PIA-conditions yields a language MIN(F

AbstractIndia’s coal contribution to the total electricity generation mix stood at 73% in 2018. To meet India’s NDC ambitions, the federal government announced determined targets to integrate 450 GW Renewable Energy in the grid by 2030. This paper explores the pathways to integrate high RE generation by 2030 with effective balancing of supply and demand and associated challenges of flexibility requirements. A Unit commitment and economic dispatch model, which simulates the power system operation was used. The overall share of variable renewables reaches 26% and 32% in the Baseline Capacity Scenario (BCS) and High Renewable Energy Scenario (HRES) respectively. Improved ramp rates and a minimum thermal loading limit induce flexibility in the thermal fleet. In the HRES, more than 16 GW of coal plants are required for two-shift operations in April and more than 50% of days see an aggregate all-India ramp from the coal fleet in excess of 500 MW per minute. Battery Storage provides daily balancing while reducing VRE curtailment to less than 0.2% in the HRES. Nationally Coordinated dispatch shows increased power transfer from high VRE regions to export power during high VRE generation periods. It is thus found that high RE penetration is possible by 2030 at no extra system costs.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the normal operation of a pressurized water reactor plant, RPN430KA (quadrant power tilt rate over 3%) alarms were issued several times, and the alarm frequency increased with the increase of burnup, which affected the normal operation of the unit. The original signal of this alarm is from four power range channels (RPN). After the process of signal filtering, if the difference between the maximum and minimum nuclear power is still greater than 3%, the alarm will be triggered. In this paper, the root cause of the quadrant power tilt rate alarm phenomenon is studied, and targeted solutions are given. The research shows that the main factor affecting the alarm is the inconsistency between the filtering sampling time during the discretization process and the physical sampling time of the alarm signal, and the induced reason is that the fluctuation of nuclear power gradually increases with the deepening of burnup. The nuclear power fluctuation is a noise signal with too many complex factors but existed objectively. Therefore, in the case of large fluctuation of nuclear power, if the actual filtering effect is not achieved, it is easy to appear alarm phenomenon, which can be solved by modifying the sampling time of signal processing. The results of this paper can be used as reference for plant operation.

Abstract:
AbstractThe micro gas turbine (MGT) is considered one of the main solutions for the future power generation system to provide secure and stable energy. Thanks to its multi-fuel capability and high values of power-to-weight ratio, it is a suitable candidate for many applications such as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, range extenders, and auxiliary power units. Among these applications, the micro-CHP system benefits from both the electricity and exhaust heat of the MGT for household or industrial process applications. The MGT could be integrated with a heat exchanger to introduce a CHP boiler to the domestic boiler market. To reduce the cost and size of the package and to compete with a traditional boiler the simple Brayton cycle without the recuperator is considered and all of the useful energy in the exhaust gas is transferred to the heat exchanger to provide hot water. To further reduce the cost of the system to compete in the market, off-the-shelf components were adopted in this project. In this article, the development process of this product is presented including conceptual design based on the type and size of the market. It follows with an evaluation of off-the-shelf compressor and turbine modulus from the automotive turbochargers to match the operating conditions. Here, the MGT is designed in a way that can be adapted to the boilers with minimum components change. A high-speed alternator was powered with a tie grid drive/inverter to enable a bi-directional connection of the power unit to the network. A comparison between the product definition and experimental results of a demonstrator prototype is presented which reveals gaps between design and prototype outcomes. Analysis shows that 23% of the power degradation can be recovered by enhancing the cooling. Potential development and improvement scenarios are addressed for future development.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents a critical analysis of the capacity of the nation-state to develop and implement effective policy interventions on behalf of national labour interests in highly globalized industries. This follows the consistent observation that, under neoliberal capitalism, governments have lacked the power and/or will to implement pro-labour legislation in the same way as they have done for capital (Fourcades-Gourinchas and Babb 2002; Peck 2004; Kotz 2015). This discussion is developed with reference to the Tonnage Tax policy, introduced by the UK government in 2000, as the key policy strategy to revitalize the ailing shipping industry (Department for Transport 1998). In the broadest terms, the strategy is a tax concession designed to attract British ship owners to re-flag their ships to the UK national register, retain the majority of their ship management in the UK and train British seafarer cadets (Selkou and Roe 2002; Brownrigg et al. 2001; Gekara 2010). The core of the strategy, i.e. the tax element, represents an alternative system of calculating corporation tax for shipping companies based on fixed rates and with reference to a shipping company’s total operating tonnage per year rather than its total income, which represents a highly reduced rate of taxation. To specifically address the decline in the British national seafarer labour market and the supply of British officers, a Minimum Training Obligation (MTO) was included for all British-registered ships, which simultaneously incentivized and compelled shipping companies to increase their cadet recruitment and training activities (Selkou and Roe 2002).

AbstractThis work was conducted to design a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system with photovoltaic energy which provides simultaneous generation of electricity, heat, and cold for a high-rise office building (23 floors) in the city of Mashhad in Iran. Our strategy was to supply load electric, thermal, and refrigeration with the help of solar energy. In addition, its superiority over other systems was evaluated. Analysis and study of solar radiation and the maximum level of solar panels use, according to the architectural plan, were carried out at the project site. The analysis of shadow points, the use of inverters and electrical detectors to increase the maximum solar power, and its cost-effectiveness were carefully studied via PVSOL software. Additionally, the amount of heat, cold, and electricity consumption was accurately calculated according to international standards and utilizing HAP software. The criteria for saving on the initial cost reduction, carbon dioxide emission reduction, operating cost reduction, payback period, revenue, and the minimum life expectancy of the equipment compared to those in other methods were also evaluated. The results obtained from the designed system of simultaneous generation of electricity, heat, and refrigeration, which combines gas microturbines as the primary stimulus, a combination of absorption and compression chiller to provide refrigeration load, a boiler for auxiliary heat load, and a thermal photovoltaic system to produce both electric and thermal loads, were finally revealed. This is believed to be a cost-effective strategy for high-rise residential or commercial buildings with a geographical location like that of Mashhad. Based on the electricity sales to the grid, with the rate of increase in inflation in electricity tariffs, this design in the Mashhad project was estimated to have an annual income of 166.676 thousand dollars. Moreover, the initial capital return period in this project was calculated to be 5.19 years.

Abstract:
In a Nuclear Power reactor, safety loads are backed by standby battery system. The healthiness of the battery is very essential requirement and prominent attention is given to availability and reliability of battery supply in nuclear plants. Hence regular monitoring and testing the performance of the battery is a prime requirement. The capacity and load cycle discharge testing of the battery is done annually and the current system employed is to discharge the battery current through resistor banks, which results in unusable power consumption and is uneconomical. The growing trend in power electronics field has given the new technology of regenerating the dissipated power to grid. This paper proposes a high power electronic regenerative technology with high efficiency, low harmonics to pump the dc power to the grid. Though, it is available at lower rating in industry, the paper proposes a high power regenerative discharge system. The topology selected is interleaved boost converter interfaced to a three phase grid connected inverter. The challenges involved are high power operation, steep current discharges with a minimal interference to the normal plant operation power supplies during the regeneration. This paper also presents the system design and simulation results.

Selective Catalytic Reduction has been well demonstrated as an effective technology for reducing NOx emissions from coal-fired utility boilers. Emerging environmental regulations can have an impact on the traditional design and operation of an SCR system. Increasing demands on SCR emission reduction performance affects the design of many of the SCR components aside from the catalyst bed. Obtaining an optimal distribution of ammonia reagent in the flue gas stream is a primary requirement for high performance levels. This requirement must be balanced with limited space availability, all while ob

Abstract The study presented focuses on control of central electric resistance heating (often referred to as electric furnaces) in a manner to meet a specified target reduction in average electric power demand over 5-minute utility verification periods. The paper describes a supervisory control method that uses a small number of sensed points to meet these target power demand reductions while ensuring that indoor temperature is maintained within a comfortable range. Testing of the control method is performed in two identical test homes with the control methodology augmented to account for prac

This paper describes the performance and operating experience with two residential sized Combined Heat and Power units which were in operation from 1979 through 1995. The first unit was an automatic coal fired steam electric Combined Heat and Power system, based on the Rankine Steam Cycle. The unit was initially fired in 1979, operating with a steam turbine-generator for two years, and was modified with a reciprocating expander for an additional two years operation. The unit functioned reliably, with only four forced outages during the four years of operation. The second system was diesel engi

An optimal sizing method is developed in this work based on an analytical scheme for determining optimal operation decisions. Using the analytic optimal operation scheme allows for a more thorough optimal sizing method because of the minimal computational effort required as compared to mixed integer programming approaches. For example, an optimal sizing method based on this approach can more feasibly consider several years of weather data and the range of likely fuel/electricity costs for the term of operation of the PGU. The optimal sizing method in this work takes advantage of this efficient

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) represent one of the main technological options for reducing vehicle CO2 emissions, helping car manufacturers (OEMs) to meet the stricter targets which are set by the European Green Deal for new passenger cars at 80 g CO2/km by 2025. The optimal power-split between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the electric motor is a challenge since it depends on many unpredictable variables. In fact, HEV improvements in fuel economy and emissions strongly depend on the energy management strategy (EMS) on-board of the vehicle. Dynamic Programming approach (DP), direc
