Introduction. Harold Hirschsprung, a physician at Queen Louise Children’s Hospital of Copenhagen, first described the disease that now bears his name, at the Pediatric Congress of Berlin in 1886. Since then there have been countless debates on the optimal surgical approach. This paper aims both to recap the main classical surgical techniques: Swenson, Duhamel and Soave, but the main focus is on minimally invasive techniques. Surgical techniques. In the last 25 years, the treatment for Hirschsprung disease has progressed. If classically the preferred treatment was in 2-3 stages, now the definit

Abstract:
Minimally invasive surgery has been a major advance in the practice of medicine as it reduces the morbidity associated with larger incisions required for open surgery. A videoscopic system is used to capture and transmit two-dimensional images of the patient during a procedure. In open surgery, the binocular configuration of the human visual system is used to generate key depth information. Minimally invasive surgery requires interpretation of monocular visual cues to perform visuospatial judgments and complex psychomotor skills. The absence of binocular depth cues extends the learning curve d

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how to maximise spatial information from surgical camera images for robotic navigation. Image enhancement and depth estimation techniques are extended to not only improve the visual navigation capability in robotic surgery, but enable more accurate clinical diagnosis. Targeted applications include bronchoscopy and arthroscopy, with trials using real and synthetic data demonstrating potential for improved clinical outcomes of minimally invasive surgery.

Intra-operative imaging and robotics are some of the technologies driving forward better and more effective minimally invasive surgical procedures. To advance surgical practice and capabilities further, one of the key requirements for computationally enhanced interventions is to know how instruments and tissues move during the operation. While endoscopic video captures motion, the complex appearance dynamic effects of surgical scenes are challenging for computer vision algorithms to handle with robustness. Tackling both tissue and instrument motion estimation, this thesis proposes a combined n

The purpose of this thesis was to develop an in-depth understanding of motor control in surgery. This was achieved by applying current theories of sensorimotor learning and developing a novel experimental approach. A survey of expert opinion and a review of the existing literature identified several issues related to human performance and MIS. The approach of this thesis combined existing surgical training tools with state-of-the-art technology and adapted rigorous experimental psychology techniques (grounded in the principles of sensorimotor learning) within a controlled laboratory environmen

Abstract:
Breast tumors mainly include cancer and fibroadenomas. Treatment of these lesions has evolved towards the use of less invasive or minimally invasive techniques. Minimally invasive treatments destroy focal groups of cells using a non-surgical method. It requires less anesthesia, provides better cosmetic results due to minimal scarring, and provides earlier recovery. These techniques include cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, high-intensity focused US, laser therapy, vacuum-assisted excision, and irreversible electroporation. Each method involves the use of different mechanisms and applications require special considerations.

Abstract The design of an intracorpeal suturing device that will assist surgeons in placing an internal suture through a small incision. Performing surgical procedures through a small incision greatly reduces patient trauma and rehabilitation time, both of which are proportionally related to medical costs. Medical devices exists today that allow surgeons to perform procedures through small incisions, unfortunately, it is difficult to place sutures deep in the body using minimally invasive techniques. A device that enables surgeons to place sutures minimally invasively will facilitate surgeons
