Abstract:
Minion- an orderly friend in the common laundry room The common laundry room. A service to society that everyone takes for granted or an arena for bad behavior. In either case, it is a place where cheating with cleaning up after yourself as well as hijacking appointments and stealing other people’s belongings can lead to really serious fights that are reported to the police. Changing the common laundry room and keeping a waking eye on it, costs a lot of money something that not everyone has access to. Under these circumstances, the problems found there will simply go on existing until all common laundry rooms are shut down.  Research has proven that pictures of eyes can counter act behaviors similar to the ones causing trouble in the common laundry room. These pictures cause an unconscious feeling of being watched that will correct such behaviors either by creating consciousness of the bad behavior or the fear of being caught and then punished. As pictures of eyes have such a severe effect on us, an interactive robot with eyes, a voice and a kind personality will have the same effect as well as reinforce the feeling of being watched. Minion is a small interactive robot that keeps the common laundry room’s visitors company while being its patron. Minion’s main task is to remind the visitors that they are never there alone and can therefore counteract such bad behavior that is reinforced in secluded spaces. Minion succeeds in doing so by having the ability to communicate, sing, dance, eat fluff from the drier and recount facts about the world and its own life. Even while being silent it causes the same feeling of being watched for the ones being in the common laundry room with it. Unfortunately the existing prototype is that only of a shell and not a fully functional robot, as of which Minion’s functions had to be explained through pictures and reenactments during the user study that was made. Minion was embraced with excitement and approval and the case study proved that all of Minion’s functions are relevant as well as completely fulfilled. Minion could be further developed to other areas of daily life where an interactive robot could be of some use, such as in improving the quality of life for people in need of a companion.

Abstract:
The rapid and reliable detection of pathogens is of utmost importance in healthcare settings to ensure the appropriate treatment thereby reducing morbidity and mortality for the patient. Current culturing, PCR based and NGS species detection methods are time consuming (Opota et al., 2015), limited in their detection (Buckley et al., 2015), or require specialist skills and are expensive (Basho and Eterovic., 2015). Oxford Technologies Nanopore devices could provide detailed genomic sequencing at a fraction of the cost and without the need for technical bioinformatic skills. This study evaluates the MinION device and analysis tools to suggest best practice. Classification and genotyping of 12 Klebsiella isolates were performed using EPI2ME automated workflows and manual de novo assembly.  Automated workflows using raw MinION reads provided clinically relevant information identified in ~6hrs. Manual de novo assembly and analysis used hybrid, and single source data took >24hrs. The inclusion of MinION long reads overcome problems assembling short reads. Hybrid genomes provided the most contiguous and highly detailed contigs. MinION only read assemblies contained more errors but still identified similar genotypic findings. Automated workflows are rapid and require minimal bioinformatic know-how. There should be a dialogue between clinicians and bioinformaticians to develop bespoke analysis tools.  Although challenges remain around compatible kits and vulnerable flowcells long read sequencing can be an effective tool for species detection and pathogen typing. Furthermore, hybrid assemblies have the potential to advance our genome detailing and discovery.

Abstract:
Staphylococcus aureus are bacterial pathogens causing infectious diseases. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus, or MRSA, carry the mecA or mecC genes generating resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. MRSA is problematic to treat and crucial to rapidly detect while current diagnostic workflows are time-consuming. DNA sequencing offers an alternative to existing methods. Illumina, the leading sequencing platform, is time-consuming and generates short reads. The Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION presents rapid sequencing protocols, generating long reads at reduced accuracy. Here, the MinION device was evaluated to rapidly identify and differentiate between MRSA and non-MRSA isolates, with estimations on turn-around-times for clinical implementation.DNA extracted from 12 bacterial isolates were sequenced on the MinION. The automated workflow for raw MinION reads EPI2ME called taxonomy and resistance genes. MinION reads and corresponding Illumina reads were also assembled with Unicycler with short-read, long-read and hybrid assembly, and analyzed with the Center for Genomic Epidemiology bioinformatic tools. MinION and Illumina reads analyzed with the 1928 Diagnostics S. aureus pipelines were also compared. All tools correctly identified mecA in confirmed MRSA isolates, and mecC in an unconfirmed isolate. Similar results in terms of species, virulence and resistance genes were observed. Strain typing was problematic for MinION reads compared to Illumina, due to increased error rates. The minimum estimated turn-around-time for the MinION in this project, from library preparation, was approximately 6.5 hours to 7.5 hours per sample. Although further investigations are required, the MinION offers an intriguing alternative to current methods for identifying MRSA, aiding in rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Hoskins, Sara Grace. "16th Century Cast-Bronze Ordnance at the Museu de Angra do Heroismo." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/556.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the collections of the Museu de Angra do Heroismo (Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal) are nine cast bronze guns from the 16th century. Most were raised from the seafloor between the 1960s and 1990s, but this study comprises the first in-depth research into their design and manufacture. The importance of this kind of study lies in the fact that ordnance is commonly found on shipwrecks of this time. A greater knowledge of guns will help provide information about the ships from which they came. Careful documentation and study of the Museu de Angra cannon will add greatly to their value as museum exhibits, by allowing museum patrons to better understand where the guns came from, how they were cast, and why they were important. This documentation adds to our knowledge of Western European gunfounding technology during the sixteenth century, as four different countries commissioned the guns: Portugal, Spain, France, and England. With detailed documentation and publication, the Museu de Angra bronze guns can be added to the bibliography of ordnance of this period, which will aid future researchers who encounter similar pieces. The Museu de Angra bronze guns, as symbols of the military and naval power of the countries that commissioned them, were sent aboard ships, into the field, and mounted on fortress walls. Bronze guns of this time period are particularly important, as bronze was an expensive commodity, and the demand for ordnance was increasing rapidly. Countries developed more effective ways to make use of iron for the founding of guns, and the use of bronze became more symbolic of wealth. The information that each gun contains includes both the cutting-edge military technology of the time and the artistic statement of the founder. Some of the finest metalwork of the period was displayed in cast bronze guns, and due to the founding techniques, no two are the same, making each an important piece of history.

Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE1108/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Although rarer than in animals, separate sexes (dioecy) have evolved in ∼15,600 angiosperm species (∼6% of all angiosperm species). How sex is controlled is a central question in plant sciences and also in agronomy as many crops are dioecious (∼20% of crops) with only one useful sex (usually female). Only three master sex-determining genes have been identified in dioecious plants so far, namely in persimmons, asparagus and strawberry. Dioecy likely evolved several times independently in angiosperms, suggesting that sex-determining genes are of diverse origins. Hermaphroditism is the predicted ancestral state of the angiosperm flower. Two main pathways have been identified that explain the evolution of hermaphroditism towards dioecy: either through a monoecious state (with both unisexual male and female flowers on the same individual) or a gynodioecious state (with females and individuals having hermaphroditic flowers). My aim is to compare two plant systems representing each one of these two pathways. In Coccinia grandis, a Cucurbitaceae with an XY chromosome system, dioecy evolved through monoecy. In Silene latifolia, a well-studied dioecious plant with XY sex chromosomes, dioecy evolved through gynodioecy. Three genes controlling monoecy have been identified in melon, and it was suggested that these genes act as sex-determining genes in closely related dioecious species such as C. grandis. I therefore chose a candidate gene approach in this species. Very few genetic and genomic data are available in C. grandis, and we chose to use SEX-DETector, a probabilistic method that uses RNA-seq data to genotype parents and their offspring, and infers sex-linked genes with no need for a reference genome. This method allowed me to identify 1,364 genes that are present on the sex chromosomes of C. grandis. I found that the sex chromosomes are enriched in sex-biasedgenes when compared to autosomes and I characterized Y chromosome degeneration in terms of decreased expression and gene loss. Finally, I showed that dosage compensation occurs in C. grandis. Testing for the three candidates genes is ongoing. In S. latifolia 3 regions involved in sex determination have already been identified on the Y chromosome. We chose to sequence this chromosome to identify sex-determining genes. The sequencing of Y chromosomes remains one of the greatest challenges of current genomics. The assembly step is very difficult because of their highly repeated content. Consequently, fully sequenced Y chromosomes are rare and mainly available for research in animals. To overcome the difficulty of assembling reads with many repeats, I used third generation sequencing (TGS, producing long reads). I produced a dataset using the Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencer with Y chromosome DNA. Assembling was performed using a combination of Illumina, MinION and PacBio sequencing data. The final assembly had a total length of 563 Mb with a scaffold N50 of 6,114 bp, and contained 16,219 de novo annotated genes

Ulrich, Kristina. "Molecular epidemiological study on Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus isolates from aquafarms in Scotland over three decades." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/28340.

Abstract:
Introduction: RNA viruses are economically important pathogens of fish, and among these viruses, infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is of particular concern for the aquaculture industry, especially for farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This non-enveloped aquatic virus, which was first isolated in the UK in 1971, belongs to the family of Birnaviridae and has a bi-segmented dsRNA genome of about 6kb. IPNV is classified in 6 genogroups with correspondence to 10 known serotypes and an additional proposed genogroup of marine aquabirnaviruses (MABV). IPNV causes high mortality in fry and a reduced mortality in adult fish, respectively. Fish, which survive, can become carriers and this can lead to a clinical outbreak by releasing infective material into water or by vertical transmission via oocytes, milt and seminal fluids. Methods: This project aimed at determining the phylogeny and genomic changes of IPNV in Scotland by whole genome sequence analysis of IPNV isolates (diagnostic TCID50 supernatants) spanning 3 decades since 1982, using next generation sequencing technology. Viral RNA of IPNV culture supernatant (CHSE-214 and TO cell culture) was processed for next generation sequencing on an Illumina MiSeq platform. Library preparation was performed using the Nextera XT DNA Library Kit, prior to sequencing according to the manufacturer's MiSeq Reagent Kit v3 (150cycles) protocol. To optimize whole genome next generation sequencing for IPNV, we compared two RNA processing protocols, the Glasgow (GLAP) and the Goettingen protocol (GOEP) with focus on missing terminal nucleotides after a de novo genome assembly. Sequences were used to determine the phylogeny and selection pressure on the genome as well as a possible virus-host adaptation. Results: The results showed that both protocols were able to give full length genomes as well as genomes with missing terminal nucleotides. The phylogenetic analysis of 57 sequenced IPVN isolates shows that 78.95 % of the isolates group within genogroup V, which includes serogroup Sp and 5.26 % within genogroup I which includes serogroup Ja. Segment A of 15.79 % of the isolate grouped within genogroup III, which includes serotype Ca1 and Te but only 7.02 % of the segment B isolates grouped in the genogroup III. The remaining 8.77 % of segment B groups within genogroup II, containing the Ab serotype. Previous research has shown that residue substitutions at positions 217 and 221 in the major capsid protein VP2 have an impact on the virulence of the virus, leading to different virulence types: virulent (T217, A221), low virulence (P217, A221), avirulent (T217, T221) and persistent (P217, T221). Whole genome sequence results show that 58.93 % of the sequenced isolates belong to the persistent, 32.14 % to the low virulent type, only one isolate was of a virulent type and 7.15 % had not virulence assigned amino acid compositions in positions 217 and 221. The selection pressure analysis showed that especially VP2 is experiencing selection pressure in the variable region. In the VP1 protein we see two sites under positive selection pressure within specific motifs. VP5 showed positive selected sites mostly within the truncated region of the protein. Other proteins showed no particular interesting sites of selection. The codon adaptation analysis showed highest adaptation index for VP2. Besides VP5, which had an CAI index below one, therefore showing negative adaptation, other IPNV proteins had an CAI of barely above the value of 1. The dinucleotide abundance, focussing on CpG, showed that CpG is underrepresented in segment A and B. Discussion Phylogenetic analysis of the sequenced IPNV strains shows separate clustering of different genogroups. Genetic reassortment is observed in segment B showing a grouping within genogroup III and II although the segment A of these isolates was grouping exclusively within III. We found that over 50 % of the isolates belong to the persistent and over 30 % to the low virulent type, assuming that due to not sterilising vaccination these types were selected in the vaccinated population. The results from the CAI calculations indicate an adaptation of IPNV to its host. Together with the findings that CpG is underrepresented in IPNV it suggests that this leads to an immune escape. Especially since the selection pressure analysis showed positive selection in VP2 within the virulence determination sites of the protein, indicating that IPNV "tries" to downregulate immune recognition. The prevalence of mostly persistent type of isolates indicates together with the assumption of adaptation and immune escape that IPNV is evolving with the host in order to ensure survival.

Abstract:

As times change, the behaviour of mass and way of thinking remain the same. Mass is still relying on irrational solutions, ideas and is controlled by various emotions. Absurd fanatic manifestations overcome the critical mind of an individual. Nowadays, in the Lithuanian culture, one of the most prominent display of the mass fever can be recognised in basketball fans that cheer, shout patriotic slogans and tend to turn basketball players into idols. In contemporary art this theme is not overlooked – the relation between basketball and the society is constantly being analysed, as well as the change of its meaning in different periods of time. The object of work. The cycle of three painting works – portraits of fans. The theme of the work focuses on this mass phenomenon, analyses the main features of the mass and helps to evaluate own goals more consciously.

When performing an analysis of the evolution of software quality and software metrics, there is a need to get access to as many versions of the source code as possible. There isa lack of research on how data or source code can be extracted from the source controlmanagement system Git. This thesis explores different possibilities to resolve thisproblem. Lately, there has been a boom in usage of the version control system Git. Githubalone hosts about 6,100,000 projects. Some well known projects and organizations thatuse Git are Linux, WordPress, and Facebook. Even with these figures and clients, thereare very few tools able to perform data extraction from Git repositories. A pre-studyshowed that there is a lack of standardization on how to share mining results, and themethods used to obtain them. There are several tools available for older version control systems, such as concurrentversions system (CVS), but few for Git. The examined repository mining applicationsfor Git are either poorly documented; or were built to be very purpose-specific to theproject for which they were designed. This thesis compiles a list of general issues encountered when using repositorymining as a tool for data gathering. A selection of existing repository mining tools wereevaluated towards a set of prerequisite criteria. The end result of this evaluation is thecreation of a new repository mining tool called Doris. This tool also includes a smallcode metrics analysis library to show how it can be extended.

Abstract:
This paper presents the first panoramic study of minkan (citizen publications) in China from the 1950s until the 1980s. The purpose of doing so is to recover the thoughts and practice obliterated by state power by examining unofficial magazines as having social, political and historical functions. Moreover, it attempts to examine this recent history against the backdrop of the much older history of Chinese print culture and its renaissance. The study of unofficial magazine in post-1949 China contributes to the recovery of a lost past resistance. It is an exercise in remembering in the context of marginalisation and exclusion by official history. Furthermore, it examines the reconstruction of the narrative of Chinese modern history, and the building up of a civil society that is independent of both the state elite and the new apolitical bourgeoisie in Mainland China. Minkan in this thesis has multiple connotations: as unofficial magazine, as civic expression, and as a way of resistance. The media of minkan take in various formats: public squares, posters, walls, book series and so on. By researching the lifespan of a minkan I attempt to make transparent both the idea and the concrete dynamics of its practice. Drawing on the theories of civil society and the public sphere, this study explores the creative practice of minkan as a revival of the concept of ‘moveable words’ in the Chinese print tradition.

Östlund, Jacob, and Kristian Kierkegaard. "Uranium Mining Industry : -A valuation of uranium mining companies." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Accounting and Finance, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-927.

Full text
Abstract:

Background:

Over the last three years uranium prices have soard from US $14 per pound (lb) to the current price of US $120/lb and this rapid incline of the commodity have created a boom within the uranium prospecting and min-ing industry. There are currently 435 nuclear reactors all over the world and these reactors demand 180 millions of pounds of uranium each year to run at full production. Currently the uranium mining industry only sup-plies 110 million pounds of the demanded quantity. The remaining 70 mil-lion pounds are coming from secondary sources such as decommissioned nuclear warheads and other sources. Market estimations say that the sec-ondary sources will only cover the shortage up until around 2012 then primary sources have to supply almost the whole quantity demanded. These factors imply that some sort of analysis model for uranium mining companies would be needed.

Purpose:

The purpose of this report is to valuate three companies within the ura-nium industry and to establish if the current market value is coherent with the fundamental value of these companies. The authors will propose a valuation model that could be used when valuating companies within the uranium industry.

Method:

A qualitative method has been used in order to value three companies within the uranium mining business that are fairly large players on the market. The valuation of these companies is based upon a discounted cash flow analysis, a relative PV valuation and relative valuation. The compa-nies included in the report are corporations that are quoted at Toronto Stock Exchange and they have started mining uranium. Data have been collected through annual reports and the companies Internet pages. Other secondary information such as valuation theories has been collected from academic search engines and books on the subjects.

Conclusions:

The current market values of uranium mining companies are not coherent with the actual fundamental values according to the authors. Both funda-mental and a comparative approach could be used when valuing these companies and the most important part in the valuation is to try and fore-cast the commodity price and then to estimate the companies possible mining reserve/extractable resources.

Abstract:
Mining concessions are subject to the fulfillment of liabilities by their owners based on ground for revocation, known as «expiration», as part of mining rights systems. The recent evolution of these liabilities and their focus as part of the conditions offered by the country for investment are analyzed by the author. To do this, the author conduct a review about the changes taken place in 1991 and 2008 mainly, as well as provides the elements to analyze the appropriateness of modifications or its flexibility. The tables used in the explanation constitutes a contribution, which were used by the author in conferences and due diligence for mining projects, as well as the consideration of both elements in the analysis of doctrine and real application of these concepts under the system of Peru.

Thesis (LLM) -- University of Limpopo, 2012
The study focuses on rehabilitation, since absence of proper rehabilitation process result in indelible damage to the environment. South Africa, like many other countries, is faced with many environmental problems caused by mining. These problems are particularly caused by, inter alia, abandoned mining areas without rehabilitation, inadequate environmental impact assessment after closure, inadequate financial provision for rehabilitation, and lack of monitoring and aftercare system after post mine closure. The study found that many Companies ignore laws governing prospecting, extraction and rehabilitation. The main purpose of this research is to investigate and recommend guidelines in the rehabilitation process so as to instil respect for the environment. The study therefore recommended strict legislation relating to environmental protection against mining.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Analyses of risks related to ground and underground issues (surface collapses, subsidence, rockfalls, etc.) are generally undertaken in a strong context of uncertainty. However, tools that are available for geotechnical expert to carry out his study suffer today from not being able to really seize this context of uncertainty. This work takes firstly stock of the notion of uncertainty in risk analyses. It provides a definition and a typology of uncertainty that can be concretely used by the expert. For each of the defined classes, methods allowing an operational treatment of uncertainties are presented, either extracted from a literature survey or developed in the framework of the Thesis. The use of probabilities as an expertise-help tool is secondly examined. A discussion, which distinguishes between frequentist and epistemic interpretations of probabilities, is proposed to evaluate the benefits and implications that probabilities can have towards the practical elaboration of a risk analysis. This study is mainly dedicated to the field expert in charge of the analysis. Numerous concrete examples (analysis of surface stability above an underground coal mine, sinkhole development analysis over an underground gypsum mine, elaboration of a Mining Risk Prevention Plan) are therefore provided both to present the main results of the work and to illustrate the adaptability of the tools being introduced to the current methodologies of analysis. They also aim at highlighting the fact that the treatment of uncertainties and the use of probabilities in risk analyses can facilitate the process of expertise and allow a better communication between the various actors of risk management

Abstract:
This project explores the possibilities in detecting changes in opinion over time. For this purpose, different techniques and algorithms in opinion mining have been studied and used as a theoretic foundation when developing strategies towards detecting changes in opinions.Different approaches to a system that detects and visualises changes in opinions have been proposed. These approaches include using machine learning techniques like the naiveBayes algorithm and opinion mining techniques based on SentiWordNet. Additionally, feature extraction techniques and the impact of burst detection have been studied.During this project, experiments have been carried out in order to test some of the techniques and algorithms. A data set containing hotel reviews and a prototype have beenbuilt for this purpose, allowing easy support for testing and validation. Results found high accuracy in opinion mining with the lexicon SentiWordNet, and the prototype can detect hotel features and possible reasons for changes in opinion. It can also show "good" and "bad" geographical areas based on hotel reviews. For commercial use, the prototype can help analyse the massive amount of hotel informa-tion published each day by customers, and can help hotel managers analyse their products. It can also be used as a more advanced hotel search engine where users can find extra information in a map user interface.

Abstract:
Causality plays a central role in human reasoning, in particular, in common human decision-making, by providing a basis for strategy selection. The main aim of the research reported in this thesis is to develop a new way to identify dynamic causal relationships between attributes of a system. The first part of the thesis introduces the development of a new data mining algorithm, called Dynamic Causal Mining (DCM), which extracts rules from data sets based on simultaneous time stamps. The rules derived can be combined into policies, which can simulate the future behaviour of systems. New rules can be added to the policies depending on the degree of accuracy. In addition, facilities to process categorical or numerical attributes directly and approaches to prune the rule set efficiently are implemented in the DCM algorithm. The second part of the thesis discusses how to improve the DCM algorithm in order to identify delay and feedback relationships. Fuzzy logic is applied to manage the rules and policies flexibly and accurately during the learning process and help the algorithm to find feasible solutions. The third part of the thesis describes the application of the suggested algorithm to a problem in the game-theoretic domain. This part concludes with the suggestion to use concept lattices as a method to represent and structure the discovered knowledge.

Zheng, George. "Web Service Mining." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26324.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, we present a novel approach for Web service mining. Web service mining is a new research discipline. It is different from conventional top down service composition approaches that are driven by specific search criteria. Web service mining starts with no such criteria and aims at the discovery of interesting and useful compositions of existing Web services. Web service mining requires the study of three main research topics: semantic description of Web services, efficient bottom up composition of composable services, and interestingness and usefulness evaluation of composed services. We first propose a Web service ontology to describe and organize the constructs of a Web service. We introduce the concept of Web service operation interface for the description of shared Web service capabilities and use Web service domains for grouping Web service capabilities based on these interfaces. We take clues from how Nature solves the problem of molecular composition and introduce the notion of Web service recognition to help devise efficient bottom up service composition strategies. We introduce several service recognition mechanisms that take advantage of the domain-based categorization of Web service capabilities and ontology-based description of operation semantics. We take clues from the drug discovery process and propose a Web service mining framework to group relevant mining activities into a progression of phases that would lead to the eventual discovery of useful compositions. Based on the composition strategies that are derived from recognition mechanisms, we propose a set of algorithms in the screening phase of the framework to automatically identify leads of service compositions. We propose objective interestingness and usefulness measures in the evaluation phase to narrow down the pool of composition leads for further exploration. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework and to address challenges faced by existing biological data representation methodologies, we have applied relevant techniques presented in this dissertation to the field of biological pathway discovery.

Abstract:
Automation in mining industry is one of the important research and application areas of artificial intelligence. Also it is one of the key areas that autonomous vehicle technology being built upon. In order to accomplish autonomous driving, researchers get help from many different areas such as computer science, mechanical engineering, mathematics, and even psychology, and many more areas. With the current speed of technological development, in the near future, it will be inevitable that autonomous driving will be reality in many areas including mining areas, public and private transportation. It is obvious that autonomous vehicles will be major type of transportation when benefits of autonomous vehicles realized by the public. In this work, a lighting system for autonomous mining vehicle that has never been truly and intensively studied was developed. In this study, a state-of-the-art lighting system was designed and tested for realization of autonomous mining vehicle. Not only lighting system but also cleaning system for the surfaces of headlamps, sensors, and cameras has been developed and two patent application has been made. Also human vehicle interaction was studied.
Två patentansökningar har lämnats in.

Abstract:
Process mining techniques are able to extract knowledge from event logs commonly available in today's information systems. These techniques provide new means to discover, monitor, and improve processes in a variety of application domains. There are two main drivers for the growing interest in process mining. On the one hand, more and more events are being recorded, thus, providing detailed information about the history of processes. On the other hand, there is a need to improve and support business processes in competitive and rapidly changing environments. This manifesto is created by the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining and aims to promote the topic of process mining. Moreover, by defining a set of guiding principles and listing important challenges, this manifesto hopes to serve as a guide for software developers, scientists, consultants, business managers, and end-users. The goal is to increase the maturity of process mining as a new tool to improve the (re)design, control, and support of operational business processes.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the influence of institutional investors in the activities of large, publicly traded gold mining companies. As key sources of financing and dominant shareholders in company stocks, institutional investors have pushed for the maximisation of shareholder value as company goal. I examine the financial and operational realignments implemented by firms and their implications for production, growth and geography in the commodity boom and bust cycle of 2003-2015. I argue that the bid to deliver shareholder value manifested in highly fragmented, but interlinked, sites of accumulation: sharp swings in stocks and dividend payments that diverged from their actual basis in production, alongside increasing claims to future profitability through spatial restructuring. I theorise the process as contradictory-laden and crisis-prone as mineral extraction came to be mediated by the yield requirements, investment motives and risk tolerance of institutional investors. The thesis contributes to key debates on financialisation and mineral extraction within geography, political ecology and the financialisation literature.

Abstract:
Precious and base metal mining projects can serve as a stepping-stone in moving the mining industry towards achieving compliance with a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability. Using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying gaps between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps provide opportunities for sustainability driven innovation. Evaluation of mining project phases and their impacts on ecological and social systems using the four Sustainability Principles highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Companies choosing to develop mining projects using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development can expect to achieve many business benefits, including improved reputation, increased transparency and stakeholder trust. Strengthening these aspects will provide robust support to companies as they manoeuvre to define their role in a sustainable society. This thesis examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed to support a successful transition into a sustainable society.

Abstract:
Today, Crete offers a rich and partially unique flora. The aim of this thesis is to study plants in the Minoan world (Crete and Akrotiri, Thera), by identifying the species thanks to diverse media, by analyzing the methods of preparation and uses which Minoans could make of these plants. The first part of our work is an iconographic catalog which lists plants in art, writings and scientific analyses. Previous studies focus on the identification of floral patterns or a specific plant, and relationships between men and plants are not or not much analyzed. The special feature of our approach is to be completed by a contextual analysis which allows to compensate for this gap. The second part of our researches concerns the preparation of plants, that is to say the attention which they required before being used in everyday life. The possible fields being numerous, our study focuses on the use of plants in religion and in textile industry

Abstract:
Contemporary workflow management systems are driven by explicit process models, i.e., a completely specified workflow design is required in order to enact a given workflow process. Creating a workflow design is a complicated time-consuming process and typically there are discrepancies between the actual workflow processes and the processes as perceived by the management. Therefore, new techniques for discovering workflow models have been required. Starting point for such techniques are so-called &ldquo
workflow logs"
containing information about the workflow process as it is actually being executed. In this thesis, new mining technique based on time information is proposed. It is assumed that events in workflow logs bear timestamps. This information is used in to determine task orders and control flows between tasks. With this new algorithm, basic workflow structures, sequential, parallel, alternative and iterative (i.e., loops) routing, and advance workflow structure or-join can be mined. While mining the workflow structures, this algorithm also handles the noise problem.

Abstract:
This work is an initial exploration of the use of the decision-theoretic concept of utility to guide pattern mining. We present the use of utility functions as against thresholds and constraints as the mechanism to express user preferences and formulate several pattern mining problems that use utility functions. Utility guided pattern mining provides the twin benefits of capturing user preferences precisely using utility functions and of expressing user focus by choosing an appropriate utility guided pattern mining problem. It addresses the drawbacks of threshold guided pattern mining, the specification of threshold and the assumption of a fixed level of interest. We examine the problem of mining patterns with the best utility values in detail. We examine monotonicity properties of utility functions and the composition of utility functions from sub-utility functions as mechanisms to prune the search space. We also present a top-down approach for generating projected databases from FP-Trees, which is an order of magnitude faster than methods proposed in the literature.
