Abstract:
This paper focuses on the application of Taguchi Robust Design to determine the optimum tensile strength of Ukam-Plant Fibre Reinforced CNSL Composite using indigenous or locally sourced vegetable or plant based natural fibres (Ukam-plant fibres) that are Lignocellulose as potential raw material. Tensile tests were conducted on the replicated samples of Ukam-Plant Fibre Reinforced CNSL Composite to obtain the optimum properties. Hounsfield Mosanto Tensometer, a universal testing machine was used to conduct tensile tests to determine the control factor levels quality characteristics considered necessary to optimize the mechanical property being investigated. Methodology of traditional and experimental design approach of Taguchi was used for the larger the better to obtain the highest signal to noise ratio (SN ratio) for the quality characteristic being investigated and also to correlate the control factors (fibre condition i.e. untreated, silane treated and alkaline treated, volume fraction and fibre size). Minitab 16 software was used for statistical analysis to fine-tune conclusions and produce quantitative estimates. The optimum settings were as follows: alkaline treatment, volume fraction of 50%, and 50mm of fibre size which resulted in 18.69MPa optimum tensile strength. The experimental results obtained agreed satisfactorily with the Minitab 16 software predictions. The mechanical property studied revealed that composite depends significantly on the reinforcement combination of control parameters.

Abstract:
Friction Stir Welding is one of the technologies of joining solid states, which still attracts the researchers’ interest. In welded joints the mechanical properties are affected by a number of mechanical properties of the joined materials and by the process parameters as well. In the present study, the effect of a number of friction stir welding parameters on the tensile strength of the welded joint have been investigated using the Taguchi method and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The study considers different levels of friction stir welding variables; namely, different rotational speeds of (2000, 1600, 1250 rpm), different welding speeds (12.5, 16, 20 mm / min), and different welding tilt angles (0, 1, 2 degrees). The optimum process parameters and their contribution rate were selected based on the Taguchi method for test design and by using the Minitab 16 program. In this study, the best results (i.e, higher tensile strength) were obtained at a rotational velocity of 1600 rpm, linear velocity of 16 mm / min, and welding angle, 1o. The highest tensile strength was obtained under these conditions.

Abstract:
The highway is the main transportation infrastructure in Indonesia. Most of the highway pavement construction in Indonesia is flexible pavement. The filler commonly used in hot mixture asphalt is Portland Cement. Along with the issue of sustainable development and utilization of local materials, fillers are often replaced with cheaper and easily available materials. One material that can be used as a filler, cheaper and easily available is Laterite. The experiment was proposed to find out whether laterite could be used as filler material on Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC). The method and technical specification of experiment referred to Asphalt Pavement Specification, that published by Public Work Ministry of Indonesia. The experiment had another objective. The experiment would be examine whether laterite percentage variation on filler material that mixed with Portland Cement, would effect on Marshall Stability value. The filler material was a mixture of laterite and Portland Cement, which the proportion of each were 0:100, 50:50, and 100:0. Each proportion of filler material compacted with 75 and 400 blows. There were 3 samples of each combination of the proportions of the filler material. The total number of specimens were 18. Furthermore, the Marshall stability value of each specimen would be tested using ANOVA test. And ANOVA test used Software Minitab 16. The experiment result showed, Marshall Stability was greater than 800 kilograms as asphalt concrete wearing course (AC-WC) specification requirement. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test results using Minitab 16 software showed no difference in Marshall stability value on all specimens. Because, P-value of Laterite and compaction combination were less than 0.05.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, geometry is used as a basis for conducting experiments aimed at growing and arranging inorganic minerals on curved interfaces. Mineralisation is directed using crystalline and liquid-crystalline metallic soaps and surfactant/water systems as templates.¶ A review of the history, syntheses, structure and liquid crystallinity of metallic soaps and other amphiphiles is presented as a foundation to understanding the interfacial architectures in mesostructured template systems in general.¶ In this study, a range of metallic soaps of varying chain length and cation type are synthesised and characterised to find potentially useful templates for mineral growth. These include alkaline-earth, transition metal, heavy metal and lanthanide soaps. These are systematically characterised using a variety of analytical techniques, including chemical analyses, x-ray diffraction (XRD) infrared spectroscopy (IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their molecular and crystal structures are studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cryo-TEM, electron diffraction (ED), electron paramagnetic spin resonance (EPR), absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS), high resolution laser spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive x-ray analysis (EDXA), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and magnetic measurements. Models for the molecular and crystal structures of metallic soaps are proposed. The soaps are predominantly lamellar crystalline or liquid crystalline lamellar rotor phases with tilted and/or untilted molecular constituents. These display evidence of varying degrees of headgroup organisation, including superstructuring and polymerisation. A single crystal structure is presented for a complex of pyridine with cobalt soap. Simple models for their structure are discussed in terms of their swelling properties in water and oils. Experiments are also presented to demonstrate the sorbent properties of aluminium soaps on oil spills.¶ The thermotropic liquid crystallinity of alkaline earth, transition metal, heavy metal and lanthanide soaps is investigated in detail. This is done to assess their suitability as templates, and to document their novel thermotropic behaviour, particularly the relatively unknown lanthanide soaps. Liquid crystalline behaviours are studied using high-temperature XRD (HTXRD), hot-stage optical microscopy and DSC. Models for a liquid crystalline phase progression from crystals to anisotropic liquids are discussed in terms of theories of self-assembly and interfacial curvature. The terminology required for this is drawn from various nomenclature systems for amphiphilic crystals and liquid crystals. General agreement with previous studies is reported for known soaps, while liquid crystallinity is demonstrated in the lanthanide and some non-lanthanide soaps for the first time. A general phase progression of crystalline lamellar through liquid crystalline lamellar to non-lamellar liquid crystalline is discussed in terms of models concerned with the molecular and crystal structures of the soaps and their phase transitions via headgroup and chain re-arrangements.¶ Experiments aimed at guiding growth of metal sulfides using metallic soaps as templates are described, and a model for this growth is discussed. Metal sulfides have been successfully grown by reacting crystalline and liquid crystalline transition metal and heavy metal soaps with H2S gas at room temperature and at elevated temperature. These have been characterised using XRD, TEM, ED and IR. Sulfide growth is demonstrated to be restricted and guided by the reacting soap template architecture. Zinc, cadmium, indium and lead soaps formed confined nanoparticles within the matrix of their reacting soap template. In contrast, curved and flat sheet-like structures, some resembling sponges were found in the products of sulfided iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, tin and bismuth soaps. A model to explain this behaviour is developed in terms of the crystal and liquid crystal structures of the soaps and the crystal structures of the metal sulfide particles.¶ Liquid crystalline iron soaps have been subjected to controlled thermal degradation yielding magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Some XRD and TEM evidence has been found for formation of magnetic mesostructures in heat-treated iron soaps. Models for the molecular and liquid crystalline structure of iron soaps, their thermotropic phase progression and eventual conversion to these magnetic products are discussed. Systematic syntheses of mesoporous silicates from sheeted clays are discussed.¶The templates that have been used are cationic surfactants and small, organic molecular salts. Experiments are reported where a cooperative self-assembly of surfactant/water/kanemite plus or minus salt and oils yields 'folded sheet materials' (FSM'S). Templating of kanemite has also been achieved using cobalt cage surfactants. A theoretical prediction of the specific surface areas and specific volumes of homologous sets of FSM's gave excellent agreement with measured values. The geometry and topology of the mesostructures are discussed. A theoretical model is also discussed regarding the curvature found in the sheets of natural clays , and results of templating clays and silica using metallic soaps are presented. Experiments and a model for low temperature nucleation and growth of microporous silicalite-1 are described in terms of silica templating by water clathrates.¶ Finally, the problem of finding minimal surface descriptions of crystal networks is addressed. Combinatoric methods are used to disprove the existence of possible embeddings of type I and II clathrate networks in non-self intersecting periodic minimal surfaces. The crystal network of the clathrate silicate, melanophlogite is successfully embedded in the WI-10 self-intersecting surface. Details of a previously unreported, genus-25 periodic surface with symmetry Im3m are discussed.

Abstract:
Insects have developed many strategies of defence against predators in the course of evolution. The evolutionarily oldest and most widely used type of defence is chemical defence, followed by acoustic or optical defence. However, many species of insects use simultaneously multiple types of warning signals, which affect different sensory receptors of the given predator. Such a complex method of warning signals is called multimodal method. It may consist of a combination of simultaneous chemical and optical signals, or a combination of acoustic and optical signalling. The combination of chemical and optical signalling used against a predator is probably the most common form of multimodal signalling. The presented work deals with the analysis of biologically active substances, which participate in the defence mechanisms of a widespread species of insects - true bugs (Heteroptera). Pterin derivatives represent a large group of natural compounds derived from pteridin, bicyclic heterocycle, and they are found in virtually all living organisms from bacteria to vertebrates. In insects, they primarily serve as pigments, resulting for example in striking coloration of cuticles of Heteroptera. The first part of the dissertation was focused on identification and quantification of pterin derivatives in cuticles...

Abstract:
The introduction of multi-axis CNC machining has reduced machining time and increased production rates. However, optimizing simultaneous operations to produce quality parts and prolong tool life still possesses a challenge to engineers due to the mutual interactions of two tools removing material and the amount of factors and noise in a production environment. Since there are multiple factors and the sources of error are unknown, we use a statistical approach to obtain and organize information. A design of experiment study was implemented across twelve sensor responses to optimize the spindle speed, feed rate, inner diameter (ID) depth of cut and outer diameter (OD) depth of cut for simultaneous turning and boring roughing operations. The optimal machining conditions were obtained by a response optimizer from Minitab 16 statistical software. The optimized settings result in 13% reduced cutting and 10% reduced total power consumption for a 3% increase of average power. Future studies will cross correlate different responses to reduce the number of sensors in developing a robust adaptive controller for chatter detection and tool condition monitoring.

Abstract:
Abstract. In this study, guided stress waves were used to evaluate the conditions of a timber utility pole experimentally and numerically using COMSOL Multiphysics. Macro Fiber Composites (MFCs), due to their flexibility and convenience to install on curved surfaces, were used to actuate and sense guided waves along the tested specimens. Based on the wave propagation characteristics in these types of structures, an MFC actuator ring, which was developed in the previous work, was applied to tune and enhance the propagating wave modes of interest. The designed ring was used to excite longitudinal ultrasonic wave modes, mainly L(0,1), for the purpose of determining the embedded length of the pole. For the damage localization a single MFC excitation was used which proved to be more efficient than the actuator ring. Embedding the timber in soil had minimum impact on the wave propagation characteristics, given that the waves were confined in the timber pole with minimal leakage to the surrounding. The embedded length was determined accurately for sound and damage timber, using both experimental and numerical data with an error of less than 3 %. The deterioration in the timber structure, within the embedded region, was also evaluated with high accuracy of 93 %. Based on the obtained results, guided waves have high potential to be used as a non-destructive tool for the assessment and evaluation of timber utility poles.
