Abstract:
In this opening chapter on the epidemiology and risk factors for stroke, the ‘size of the problem’ in public health terms both in the United Kingdom and worldwide is set out. Incidence, prevalence, and mortality of stroke are discussed. Epidemiological terms and definitions as applied to stroke care are reviewed and illustrated, including absolute and relative risk reduction and numbers needed to treat. This chapter also discusses aetiological subtyping of stroke which represents a syndrome caused by multiple different underlying pathologies. It ends with a comprehensive review of the major an

Stroke in the young is different, complex, and challenging. This book delivers a comprehensive review of the different aspects of young ischaemic stroke. Incidence, risk factors, and aetiology differ notably from those seen in the elderly. There is an increased prevalence of traditional risk factors already at a young age, but the book also focuses on special risk factors in young stroke patients. In many young stroke patients, aetiology remains unclear. The book outlines an extensive diagnostic workup and a stroke subtype classification adapted for young strokes. Gender differences are preval

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a risk factor for subsequent stroke. A TIA diagnosis should incorporate findings on brain MRI and noninvasive angiography, if available. Some patients with TIA are at high risk of early recurrence. Rapid evaluation and treatment reduce that risk. Some new data suggest that short-term dual antiplatelet therapy may reduce stroke recurrence in patients with TIA or minor stroke.

Current guidelines recommend extensive cardiovascular imaging in patients who experience ischaemic stroke or a transient ischaemic attack to prevent recurrent stroke. Basically inland oriented, the Hittite state maintained close connections to the coast only in southern Asia Minor, which meant access to the
