Physician-patient communication is a central element in care and a good communication is linked to several health benefits for the patient. However, communication difficulties persist in medical encounters and these difficulties are more present in consultations with ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities. Previous literature on physician-patient communication present some limitations that restrict our understanding of communication difficulties. In order to improve care, patients’ experiences of this communication must be understood. The first article inserted in this doctoral dissertation consists of a systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies exploring patients’ experiences of communication with primary care physicians. Three concepts emerged from analyses: negative experiences, positive experiences and outcomes of communication. Most studies in this review did not explore ethnic and ethnolinguistic aspects, but the few studies which did show that ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities face additional barriers that exert mainly a negative influence on patients’ experiences of communication, namely, language barriers and discrimination. This review illustrates the pertinence of exploring patients’ experiences, with different ethnic and ethnolinguistic backgrounds, with qualitative methods, in order to gain a deep understanding of their perspective. Ensuing from this observation, the doctoral study was developed to explore in detail patients’ experiences of communication. During the interviews, it became apparent that patient participation was a central theme to describe patients’ experiences of communication with physicians. Since an inductive approach was chosen, the emerging objective of this study was to explore patients’ experiences of participation in the medical consultation with physicians. Moreover, we aimed to explore nuances in these experiences of participation according to patients’ ethnic and ethnolinguistic background. Findings show that patient participation is a central theme to describe experiences of communication. Five themes emerged in response to the first objective and these themes are organized in two key dimensions: a) participation in terms of information exchange and b) participation in terms of assertiveness. Across these themes, two types of participation emerged: proactive participation (i.e. patient initiated) and responsive participation (i.e. physician initiated). Patients also discussed experiences of non-participation; however, these were less common. Ethnolinguistic minorities discussed less participative experiences and attributed these difficulties to language barriers and to their ethnolinguistic identity. In conclusion, ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities seem to face additional barriers which exert mostly a negative influence on their experiences of communication and participation. In turn, these difficulties may engender negative consequences for the patients’ health, thus partly explaining health inequities affecting these minority groups. A contextual model of patient participation is presented and discussed to contextualize patients’ experiences of communication and participation.

Full textAs the number of Iranian immigrants has increased in Canada in recent decades, more research is necessary on this population. Given that immigrant-language transmission is one component of immigrant settlement process and also, Iranian immigrants have rarely been the subject of Canadian studies, thus, the purpose of this research is to study the home language profile of Iranian immigrants in Montreal compared to Toronto. Using the data of long form census questionnaire 2001, 2006 and 2011, we have studied the influence of socio-demographic, familial and migratory factors on language Iranian immigrants spoke most often at home in Montreal and Toronto. In doing so, we have carried out various descriptive analyzes to discover if Iranian immigrants are more likely to speak in nonofficial language (heritage language) at home or in official languages. For the purpose of further investigation of home language profile of Iranian immigrants I expand my research by running logistic regressions. The results show that Iranian female immigrants compared to their male counterparts, legally married immigrants, those Iranians who have immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 years old and over as well as Iranian immigrants who have arrived in Canada after 1980 spoke in non-official language at home more than official languages in both Montreal and Toronto.

Full textIn Quebec, the use of the French language is encouraged and regulated by law. Thisregulation is specifically limited to the workplace. However, the literature shows that the useof French is not guaranteed in immigrant families. French is the foundation of Quebec'sidentity, social cohesion and the integration of those chose Quebec for their life project. We conducted this research with the aim of describing and understanding the linguisticpractices of families of Burundian and Senegalese origin living in Quebec City. The researchwas divided into two quantitative and qualitative components.Through the quantitative component, we demonstrated the linguistic specificities of theBurundian and Senegalese communities in Quebec by comparing them to those of the Ivorianand Cameroonian communities. This objective led to descriptive analyses of the 2016 censusaccording to four linguistic indicators (mother tongue, language most spoken at home, official language spoken and language of work). The results show that although immigrantsfrom these four countries speak French more often at home, those from Burundi and Senegalare more likely to practice African-French bilingualism. The goal of our qualitative component was to provide an understanding of language practicesamong families of Burundian and Senegalese origin by analyzing the data through the lensof symbolic interactionism. To do so, we met with 20 parents of Burundian (10) andSenegalese (10) origin for semi-structured interviews. We noted in the parents' speeches thatfamily practices are the result of negotiations between their experiences and those of theirchildren. This negotiation reveals the identity issues facing these families. Thus, linguisticpractices within these families represent the expression of their identities, cultures andvalues.

Full textFollowing historical competitions in Canada, in Quebec just like in Cameroun, the governments of its countries believed good to give to French and English a statute of official languages. However, in practice, these two languages which have in theory an equal statute are unequal. In Canada, English who is the language of the majority is in dominant situation. In Cameroun, it is the opposite. To cure in this established fact, the governments of these countries set up linguistic and cultural policies said official bilingualism. After the analysis of these policies, we showed their failure. Because, the governments for various reasons, did not give each other all the means necessary to the training and the use of the minority official language on all the wide one of their respective territory. In the final analysis, instead of tightening the misunderstood Quebecers feeling, decided on their premises to pass from bilingualism to the unilinguism in order to protect the French language. The refusal of their recognition like distinct company by the federal government, A to bring to assert their political independence. Full textThe Breton migration to the American continent is noticeable considering its number and its continuity. According to Le Clech, pioneer and specialist of the Breton migration, 55 000 Breton people have emigrated to the USA and 45 000 to Canada between 1880 and 1970. Some studies were carried out in France and Canada, by historians, which described the repeated arrivals of Breton people in North America, the reasons or factors for their migration, the places for their settlement and their social and professional reintegration. Nevertheless, these studies are more focused on the migration to the USA, while they are nearly the same number of Breton migrants in Canada. The originality of my research lies in the chosen field of observation, which is the province of Quebec, Canada. Indeed, the French Canadian who live there, as called today Quebecois, are a minority group who was subjected similare pressure toward their language and culture as the Breton people. Consequently, this field appeared to be pertinent to analyse the relations established between the migrants and this minority group. On the other hand, what interested me in the study of the migration of the Bretons was the discovery of the way their sentiment to belonging to the regional Breton culture, in other word their “Bretonness”, was taken from the territory of origin and relocated in the destination country. I consider therefore the migration as an experimental situation, through which I tried to analyse how a cultural belonging is unbuilt, rebuilt or built. In other words, why and how some Breton migrants in Quebec express, promote, or even recreate their cultural belonging 6000 km far from their territory of birth territory ? This research allowed me to throw light of course the different expressions of cultural belonging in a situation of geographical mobility. It also allowed me to contribute to the knowledge and the understanding of the belonging to other cultural communities and therefore to participate in enriching the knowledge in the field anthropology and ethnology of migrations.

Full textThis master’s thesis examines the central challenges faced by those who translate the songs of musical theatre. First, we assess the experience of translating three American musicals with different vocations to observe various approaches of “English to French translation.” Second, this study analyzes translator behaviour toward the challenges of translation. While Chapter 1 profiles the origins of the American musical, the evolution of its terminology, and copyright issues, Chapter 2 focuses on some theoretical aspects of the practice, identifying the differences between translation and adaptation. The concepts of fidelity and freedom in translation are discussed and we broach the issue of the “translatability” of musical works. The last section of this chapter focuses on the concept of sacrifice faced by many translators. Finally, in Chapter 3, we comment the concepts of logocentric and musicocentric songs we analyze two categories involving ten challenges: linguistic and extralinguistic challenges. We examine the various challenges by comparing three translations by Nicolas Nebot, as well as three of our own. Several examples illustrate that choices made by translators may vary, depending on the translator’s objectives.

Full textThis thesis proposes to investigate the linguistic appropriations and the conceptualizations of language of secondary school students in the town of Bozen-Bolzano in South Tyrol / Alto Adige, as a sociolinguistic and didactic reflection. In this officially multilingual Italian province, which enjoys a status of protection of the German-speaking minority, living together is strongly marked by the separation of schools on an ethnolinguistic basis. The relatively recent presence of transnational migrants calls for a renewed look at the dynamics of identification between "indigenous" and "non-indigeneous" and, more particularly, its implications for education. By giving disposable cameras to secondary school students in the town of Bozen-Bolzano, a city that seems to embody a certain hybridism, with the mission of photographing "the languages of the neighborhood" to create an exhibition, the goal is to investigate the ways young people interpret the plurality that surrounds them

Full textIn Quebec City, there is a low attendance of African immigrant women in the services for victims of sexual violence. To understand this phenomenon, we developed this mixed study with a constructivist perspective on social representations of sexual violence and the available assistance. Its aims were to find out how African immigrant women in Quebec City represent sexual violence and the available assistance. To answer these questions, we used three data collection instruments: the sociodemographic questionnaire, the semi-directive interview guide, and the free association technique. A total of eleven immigrant women aged between 18 and 30 years participated in this study. They came from eight francophone countries in Africa and lived in Quebec for less than ten years. The results showed that rape was the main form of sexual violence for the participants. In addition to this, they enumerated other forms of violence more specific to their environment, such as female genital cutting and forced marriage. They mainly explained this violence by social factors. Thus, according to them, in African society, the victims are more blamed than the perpetrator, whether he is known or not. In addition to that, they considered as obstacles to their denunciation: the fear of breaking up the family, if the perpetrator is a close member or the husband, as well as the trivialization of certain forms of sexual violence. Regarding their perception of the psychological assistance, participants believed that it is reserved for «white» or «crazy people» and not very useful in African society. The assistance from the judicial system is presented as ineffective due to stereotypes about victims and subjectivity in the work of the police officers. We discussed all the study results with both our literature review and analysis framework. We also suggested recommendations for both research and social work intervention.

In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. Full textOpening doors: towards a Mexican immigrant entrepreneurship grounded theory in Quebec Immigrant entrepreneurship studies generally tend to adopt an "elite" approach focusing on cases of groups strongly represented in the statistics of entrepreneurship or in regions in which immigrant entrepreneurs have succeeded transforming territorial dynamics through the creation of high tech and added value companies. This perspective, although it has contributed in a significant way to the entrepreneurship study field, has the risk of providing a partial and idealized version of the phenomenon of immigrant entrepreneurship. Addressed comprehensively in the migration studies, Mexicans are an example of those who are often given little attention when attempting to understand the dimension of entrepreneurship, since they are associated more like "workers" than entrepreneurs”. Although there are researches that highlight the contribution of Mexican immigrants entrepreneurs, most of them, have been carried on in the United States context, due to the fact that it is the destination that millions of Mexicans have taken for more than one century. This research presents an exploratory case study of Mexicans entrepreneurs in the province of Quebec, Canada context since the economic and social geography. It is a qualitative analysis using a methodology inspired by the Grounded Theory. Focusing on actors, a theoretical sampling was carried on taking data from different sources. Twenty-three interviews were conducted with Mexican residents of the cities of Montreal, Quebec and Gatineau. The main objective was to initiate a theorization about the immigrant entrepreneurship phenomenon in a poorly documented group and context. Some conceptual categories were built from the perspective of the migrants themselves. Initially, it was also intended to explore the creation of transnational communities by Mexican immigrants in Quebec. However, initial results showed quickly that respondents, being a first generation of immigrants, were still in the phase of consolidating their ethnic communities in the host society. Nevertheless, the research identifies some of the difficulties and opportunities presented to subgroups of Mexican origin at this stage of transnationalism. For that reason, following the principles of grounded theory, the work was redirected only on immigrant entrepreneurship. In this sense, the importance of previous experiences, family supportand the reading of the territory to detect business opportunities were relevant. Routes of business entry profiles were detected. In addition, it is proposed the ethnic positioning category (the social construction that is made in the host society according to the ethnic group to which immigrant entrepreneurs belong). This category was a key to shape the structure of opportunity that allows the creation of businesses in the host cities. The whole mmigrant entrepreneurship process was synthesized with the metaphor "opening doors" which was an InVivo code that emerged from the words of the interviewees themselves and that allows us understand the venture as part of a wider process of territorialization by immigrants. The results routlined in theoretical models in order to better understand the phenomenon of immigrant entrepreneurship.

Full textThis thesis is based on ethnographic research conducted primarily within the Montreal’s Deaf community and tries to identify Deaf identity representations through artistic performances of the Montreal scene. The purpose of the research is to include Deaf culture in the social and scientific reflections about the expression of their cultural identity by minorities, through the arts. In an attempt to demonstrate the links, both theoretical and practical, between the Deaf identity and recognized social and socio-political minorities such as Blacks, gays, women or Queers, this study is grounded in the concepts of performativity (Judith Butler), performance (Clifford Geertz and Victor Turner) and representations (Moscovici and Stuart Hall). It also demonstrates the relationships between these concepts, the subjects’ personal experiences, their agency and their artistic expression.

Full textIn the regional analysis, sociocultural interrelations – particularly the psychologic links between man and his space – take a fundamental importance. Likewise the local development implies an expansion of regional power, for the region is also perceived as a social and cultural community which desire a self- government since 1945 the german speaking and ladine populations have struggled for their autonomy. A first statute has been insufficiently applied. The second statute of autonomy, brought in effect since 1972 gives to the german and ladin minorities a large power of self-government. The first part of the work presents the territorial frame and the ethnic and historic roots of South Tyrol particularism. The second part studies the two successive statutes of autonomy and their application. The third part analyse the policy of self development and the results in regional planning agriculture, tourism, industry, cultural policy and protection of the mountain. The South-Tyrol knows an original development. The agriculture has succeeded his modernisation without depopulation of the mountain. The province us the first touristic region of Italian Alps. But the relations between the linguistic groups stay delicate

Focussing on the case of Francophone-Anglophone intergroup relations in Quebec (Canada), this quantitative study examined the role of social context in second language (L2) classroom learning. Specifically, the relationships between attitudes toward the L2, the L2 community, and language policy and planning on the one hand and L2 proficiency on the other were investigated. As a secondary objective, the role played by students’ relationship with their first language (L1) and L1 community (i.e., ethnolinguistic identity) in the construction of these attitudes was also studied. In total, 121 Francophone and Anglophone high school students responded to a multi-part questionnaire, and their data was analyzed with respect to their scores on provincial L2 tests. Significant relationships between attitudes toward language policy and planning, attitudes toward the L2, and proficiency were confirmed as was the role of ethnolinguistic identity in the construction of these attitudes. However, these findings varied across linguistic groups.

Full textThis study analyses the coexistence between the German- and Italian-speaking population of the province of Bolzano - South Tyrol. The focus is on approaches that can explain the separated realities of these two linguistic groups. Before the annexation to Italy in 1918, South Tyrol was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Two thirds of the population speaks German and preserve its linguistic and cultural features due to its administrative and legislative autonomy, which has been obtained after long struggles for recognition. This has produced a social system, which is based on the separation of the two linguistic groups supported by institutions, for instance schools, reinforced by politics and media. These developments led to a widespread identitary uneasiness of the Italian-speaking population. The central question is on how this "ethnic" separation is based on and could be preserved. It was supposed that this "South Tyrol model" is not questioned as it is perceived as a "second nature". By studying the everyday life, the perceptions and visions of the German- and Italian-speaking population, this study intends to provide explanations to the largely separated coexistence. This study uses a qualitative research approach. Group interviews were conducted with members of the Geman- and Italian-speaking population in different municipalities. In addition, expert interviews were carried out with political representatives. Results of this study suggest that different factors explain the separated coexistence by linguistic belonging: the collective memories and their transmission to younger generations; the relationships of power and domination; the definitions of "we" and the other; as well as the different South Tyrolean identities of the German- and Italian-speaking population. Encounters between the two linguistic groups are additionally hampered by the different languages and the institutional separation. The division is internalised by the two linguistic groups and practiced in accordance. This results in a dynamic of reproduction that perpetuates this model of coexistence. The Heimat as "lifeworld", which manifests itself in this separation, plays an important role for the coexistence. The "utopian dimension" of the Heimat (Bloch) does not allow to escape and to imagine a possible future which would overcome this specific type of lifeworld "Heimat Südtirol". On the contrary, this is left to the fatalism and future generations
