♦ Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disabling chronic pain condition of unknown aetiology♦ Traditionally it was thought to be rare; however, prospective studies demonstrate it to be common following both trauma and operative procedures involving the upper and lower limbs♦ The condition is usually self-limiting over a maximum period of 2 years, although minor abnormalities may remain♦ In a minority of cases it does not resolve and is responsible for severe chronic disability♦ Treatment is aimed at functional restoration of limb function supported by pharmacological intervention.

Although veterans today, particularly those with disabilities, are a minority population that comprises less than 1 per cent of the total population, in ancient Athens, veterans had a direct connection to ancient Greek drama, and the majority of the ancient playwrights and the audience would have had direct experience of combat. By focusing on Aquila Theatre’s A Female Philoctetes, and Outside the Wire’s Theater of War Ensemble’s reading of Sophocles’ Ajax, I explore the ways in which Greek drama can function to ch

The empirically rich contributions reveal how haya’ is socially constructed in varying social and cultural environments across the globe. From medieval Islam to the modern day, this

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects a small but increasing minority of women becoming pregnant. It is associated with additional risks depending on pre-pregnancy glomerular filtration rate, proteinuria, and hypertension. Some drugs are contraindicated in pregnancy. These are powerful reasons for counselling all women of childbearing age about pregnancy in CKD. With minor CKD the main issue is moderately increased risk of pregnancy-associated hypertension and pre-eclampsia. More advanced CKD is associated with reduced fertility, progressively increased risk of pre-term delivery and a significa

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) is an important cause of acute kidney injury which has a diverse aetiology but is most frequently caused by either an infection or drug reaction. Clinical features are usually non-specific or absent, although early accounts emphasized fever, rash, and eosinophilia. ATIN should be considered in all cases of acute kidney injury, especially when there is no obvious precipitant. If deemed clinically safe an early renal biopsy is recommended for diagnosis. Renal outcome will usually be good but in a significant minority, particularly the elderly, the outcom

This chapter reports the results of the first study of the trajectory of borrowed words in the speech community and the role of socio-demographic factors (age, gender, social class membership, level of education, individual bilingual proficiency, minority versus majority status, neighborhood of residence) in their adoption and spread. Making use of a sharedness index, we infer channels of diffusion of specific words and borrowing types (nonce versus widespread) across cohorts. Among the novel findings are that borrowing behavior is not simply a function of lexical need, but is acquired, and th

It has been shown that moral codes should be compared at a lower than 100% level of social acceptance. This leads to the counter-culture challenge. The problem is that the cultural background of the individuals who have not internalized the majority code affects the consequences of the codes and furthermo

Mopan (Mayan, Belize/Guatemala) has two noun classifiers that resemble gender markers. However, the gender markers (GMs) violate expectations about canonical gender (Corbett and Fedden 2016): only a minority of Mopan nouns are gendered; gender is marked only together with the noun, not in multiple syntactic domains; gender marking can be omitted in certain syntactic contexts; and gender marking can be introduced when a normally non-gendered noun co-occurs with an adjectival modifier. We address the grammatical and discourse functions of Mopan GMs in relation to their non-canonical properties.
