Abstract:
This thesis discusses the mesospheric retrievals from high spectral resolution infrared limb measurements data as measured by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS). Altough MIPAS was designed for stratospheric studies, since April 2007, MIPAS measures the entire mesosphere at least every ten days using a special viewing mode. Retrieving geophysical properties at such high altitudes requires careful attention due to signal to noise limitations as well as the intrusion of non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (nonLTE) effects. Lo strumento MIPAS, operativo a bordo del satellite polare ENVISAT negli anni dal 2002 al 2012, ha misurato spettri di emissione nel medio infrarosso utilizzando la tecnica di scansione del lembo atmosferico. L'Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA), mediante un algoritmo di inversione ottimizzato, ha ricavato dagli spettri di MIPAS la distribuzione verticale di diversi composti chimici minoritari in stratosfera e alta troposfera. The potential to detect hydrogen cyanide (HCN) spectral signatures and retrieve HCN volume mixing ratios (VMR) in the Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere (UTLS) from a space-borne infrared limb-sounding spectrometer is assessed. The primary aim of this project is to search for new molecular signatures using the infrared spectrometers and identify a unique tracer of pollution to separate two sources of pollution namely: industrial transport/non-coal emissions and biomass burning. In this thesis, the potential to observe the distribution of water vapour (H2O) and ozone (O3) in the tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) from an atmospheric limb sounding spectrometer is assessed.
