Abstract:
PurposeThe aim of this study is to determine the impact of different dimensions of consumer engagement in social media on firm performance in social media.Design/methodology/approachBeyond likes and comments, combined with the interactive behavior of consumer engagement with firms on social media, we proposed a set of metrics for consumer engagement on social media, namely personal engagement, user-interactive engagement, and fan-interactive engagement. We used the fixed-effect model and validated the impact of consumer engagement in different dimensions on firm performance.FindingsThe result shows that personal engagement and user-interactive engagement significantly correlate with firm performance; however, the same effect was not observed in fan-interactive engagement.Originality/valuePrior researches on consumer engagement in social media are mainly about consumer engagement in firm-initiated social media page. In this study, we consider the consumer engagement behavior in firm-initiated and consumer-initiated social media pages, then validate the impact of different dimensions of consumer engagement on firm performance.

Abstract:
Purpose More and more firms are utilizing social media as a distribution channel to sell products. By establishing business accounts on social media firms provide information service to strengthen their relationship with customers and boost sales. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the pricing, information service provision and channel strategies of firms who sell products through social media. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a game theoretical model to study a dual-channel supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer. Two scenarios are considered – under one scenario the manufacturer and under the other the retailer, respectively, solely provides information service. Both firms’ pricing decisions and profits are compared. Findings The authors find that in the dual-channel model with either the manufacturer or the retailer providing information service to enhance the demand: a firm that has stronger social ties with customers is willing to provide more information services; when the manufacturer provides information service, it charges a direct price higher than the wholesale price, and whether the direct-channel price exceeds the retail price depends on the strength of the manufacturer’s social ties with customers; when the retailer provides information service, the direct price is equal to the wholesale price, both lower than the retail price; and a firm always prefers itself rather than the other firm to provide information service. However, the whole supply chain is better off if the manufacturer rather than the retailer provides information service. Research limitations/implications Besides the relationship between firms and customers, the peer relationship among customers also impacts the supply chain performance, which might be studied in the future. Originality/value The study is novel in theoretically exploring the influence of firms’ social relationship with customers on firms’ pricing and channel strategies.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to: first, examine why companies create brand pages in social media, how they use them, what policies and strategies they follow, and what outcomes do they expect; and second – from firms’ point of view – how users are benefited from such pages. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study approach was employed for this study. Data were collected from personal interviews with 14 marketing managers responsible for the social media activity of their company, providing preliminary evidence about the actions firms take, the motivations that led them to getting involved, and the derived outcomes. Findings – The main actions of the firm are making prize competitions, announcing new products/services, interacting with fans, providing advice and useful information, and handling customer service issues. The basic motivations are the increasing popularity of social media, competitors’ presence, headquarters’ strategy, and cost reduction pressure. Interact with customers, create/enhance relationships with customers, brand awareness, customer engagement, promote products/increase of sales, and the more targeted acquisition of new customers, were referred to as the main expected outcomes for companies. Research limitations/implications – Given the qualitative nature of the study and the emerging field of research about social media, findings should be considered as preliminary and exploratory. Interviews with companies from more sectors and also with social media users will provide a more comprehensive view of the topic. Practical implications – The paper identifies several opportunities for company managers, suggesting practices for effective social media handling. Originality/value – Considering the rapid development of social media and their penetration in business marketing actions, this paper is an exploratory step toward the ways firms utilize social media channels.

Abstract:
Purpose – Social media has transformed conventional marketing methods. This medium offers a unique blend of asynchronous communication, opportunities to co-create and customer empowerment far removed from traditional firm-to-consumer, push-vs-pull marketing messages. The purpose of this paper is to examine how a company developed long-term effective relationships and sales growth by using their blog to generate and enhance viral word-of-mouth message diffusion. Design/methodology/approach – The exploration of the blog includes analysis of both content and metrics for a real technology firm with an assumed name. Content and the ripples from blog posts were analysed to determine diffusion and use of messages. Findings – Seven critical success factors for utilising blog marketing to maximum effect are presented to firms considering a similar strategy. Suggestions for managerial implications are also presented. Research limitations/implications – There are two limitations, the focus on a single company which restricts generalisability. The advantage of the case study approach to research does afford depth into this topic. Second, the research questions addresses a small part of the whole social media and corporate marketing sphere, however, this focus allows for depth and richness of data. Originality/value – The paper’s focus provides a unique opportunity to explore the effect of a company who manages points of connection, blogs and viral marketing, on customer relationships. Further, the study responds to the need for practical guidance for managers in relation to the management of blog marketing to facilitate customer relationships and enhance the viral impact of blogs.

Abstract:
3593 Background: FIRE-3 compared first-line therapy with FOLFIRI plus cetuximab (cet) or bevacizumab (bev) in KRAS exon 2 wild-type (wt) patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Recent analyses showed mircoRNA-21 (miR-21) expression level may be a predictive biomarker for anti-EGFR-therapy raising the question whether miR-21 influences gene expression in the EGFR signaling pathway. Methods: Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay identified quantitative miR-21 expression. Median expression was defined as a threshold value to discriminate FIRE-3 population into miR-21 low and high groups. Differential gene expression based on additional mRNA microarray data (Almac Inc, Xcel Array) was calculated by linear models adjusted for multiple testing followed by single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) to compare differentially enriched hallmarks of cancer gene sets. Overall response rate (ORR) was compared using Fisher´s exact test. Median progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier estimation and log-rank test. Results: 333 RAS wt patients provided material for miR-21 expression analysis. In these patients, low miR-21 expression was associated with higher ORR (80.0% vs. 57.9%; p = 0.005) and longer OS (35.8 months (mo) vs. 25.9 mo; p = 0.005) when cet vs bev was added to FOLFIRI. High miR-21 expression was associated with comparable ORR (74.6% vs. 64.0%; p = 0.21) and OS (24.5 mo vs. 23.8 mo; p = 0.4). There was no significant difference in PFS in either group. By comparing miR-21 low and high groups using normalized mRNA microarray data, 538 genes were found to be significantly differentially expressed in RAS wt patients after adjustment for multiple testing. Including data from the two groups into ssGSEA yielded 23 hallmark of cancer gene sets that were significantly differentially enriched; among them, KRAS-signaling showed higher enrichment in the miR-21 high group (adjusted p = 2.09 E-13). Conclusions: MiR-21 expression level might be a predictive biomarker for anti-EGFR-therapy by modulating KRAS signaling in FIRE-3 patients.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore ethical issues related to pharmaceutical marketers’ social media efforts including the prevalence and forms of direct-to-consumer web 2.0 advertising (eDTCA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) messages across social networking sites (SNSs). One goal is to determine if these eDTCA posts comply with draft guidelines issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Design/methodology/approach Content analysis of ten pharmaceutical marketers’ SNS posts documented the frequency and types of posts devoted to eDTCA, drug risks and benefits, CSR, and other purposes. Findings eDTCA represents about 35 percent of all pharmaceutical firm SNS posts and primarily communicates help-seeking messages via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Firms also promote their ethical image through CSR-related posts. These posts primarily highlight employee-focussed and community-focussed initiatives. Analysis of consumer behavior in response to each post shows that eDTCA affects only liking of YouTube videos, but CSR increases behavior responses on all SNSs except LinkedIn. Social implications Despite absence of final guidance, pharmaceutical marketers seem to abide by FDA draft social media guidance. In line with the FDA’s draft fair-balance regulations, almost all product-claim eDTCA posts state both benefit and risk information. Nevertheless, the FDA should issue final eDTCA guidance without delay consistent with traditional media direct-to-consumer advertising guidance. This should benefit consumers through consistency with their existing advertising literacy competencies. Originality/value The study represents an initial attempt to document ethical issues in the current state-of-the-practice of pharmaceutical social media marketing related to eDTCA and CSR.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the interplay between board-level governance characteristics, ownership concentration and firm performance in the Italian corporate landscape, which is characterized by high (though varying) degrees of ownership concentration. The empirical setting of this study is the Italian stock market and specifically a sample of non-financial firms included in FTSE MIB and mid-cap index of Milan stock exchange, spanning a five-year time period from 2011 up to 2015. We regressed an accounting proxy for firm performance, namely the return-on-asset (ROA) ratio, on several board-level governance variables and specifically board size, board independence, CEO-chairman duality and audit committee (ACD) full independence. In doing so, we also controlled for the impact of different levels of ownership concentration by partitioning the sample into firms with lower and-higher-than-median values of ownership concentration (OC). The empirical results indicate that board characteristics differently impact performance in firms with lower levels of OC compared to firms with higher OC. Specifically, in lower-OC firms, board independence and AC full independence have a negative impact, whereas CEO duality (either alone or interacted with board independence) has a positive impact on performance. Conversely, higher-OC firms benefit from a large board size and are negatively affected by AC independence, while the remaining variables are not significant. The key insight to be gained from our evidence is that the individual and interaction effects of board-level mechanisms may be contingent on the presence of other governance mechanisms (in this instance, the degree of ownership concentration). As such, this research adds to the existing literature questioning the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to corporate boards. In terms of practical implications, our findings support the notion that firms might consider the potential interaction and substitution effects between governance mechanisms and structure boards accordingly.

Abstract:
Large-scale training sets enabling quantitative reconstructions of past fire parameters are needed to better assess potential effects of increased fire hazard under global warming conditions. The aim of this article is to validate recently developed continental regression equations for the reconstruction of fire number, intensity and size. These transfer functions were built by linking satellite data and charcoal collected in annually sampled sediment traps. We apply these European regression equations to four annually layered lakes located on a North–South gradient in Europe. Down-core annual microscopic charcoal (MIC) and macroscopic charcoal (MAC) influx values were compared with satellite-derived time series of fire number, fire intensity and area burned. Results show that the match between predicted and observed values improves when the overall mean and median of sampled years (12 and 9 years) are considered. Especially, the comparisons of median values show a very good agreement between charcoal-inferred and satellite-observed fire-regime parameters. MIC-based predictions underestimate the variability of the observed fire parameters and MAC-based predictions overestimate it. Our results imply that median values of the fire parameters can be reconstructed well by using MIC and MAC, while it is more difficult to infer the variability of fire-regime parameters. However, when MIC- and MAC-based predictions are pooled together, the fit between observed and predicted values increases for both medians and variability. This finding suggests that MIC and MAC are complementary proxies, thus best sedimentary fire reconstructions may be achieved when they are used together. We conclude that sediment traps can be used for the construction of continental-scale training sets and that their results can be applied to Holocene sedimentary charcoal sequences.

Abstract:
In 1973 the famous Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren wrote the story about the brothers Lionheart. A story about the love between two brothers, bravery and death. Ever since, there have been a widely discussion whether the story is suitable for the young readers. Although the voices heard in the discussion mostly comes from grown-ups, but what does the children actually think? The aim of this study was to display the children’s interpretations in terms of the metaphors, the semiotics and the sequence of events the film Brothers Lionheart which was screened in the first time 1977. To answer the issues we watched the movie and implemented semi-structured interviews with seven 10-11 year old children. The children in this study gave us both different and interesting interpretations in terms of the metaphors and semiotics which could depend on different experiences in life and backgrounds. This study also shows that the children’s perception of the narrative structure in the movie varies which could mean that their story scheme sometimes is more or less developed in this age.

Abstract: Subarachnoid hemorrhage results in critical motor and cognitive impairment which leads to dysfunctions causing a negative impact in quality of life. The functional independence measure (FIM) scale is the most widely accepted functional assessment measure in use in the rehabilitation community. The aim of this study was to describe the rehabilitation outcome after a surgical aneurysm occlusion realized in patients admitted in the Clinical Hospital of Campinas State University ¿ UNICAMP. Patients were submitted to the Hunt-Hess and Fisher assessment scales after admission in to the hospital; to the FIM after surgery; and to FIM and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) after hospital discharge. The days in the hospital were counted, patients had physical therapy twice a day and the injured arteries were identified. Thirteen patients, 12 woman¿s (92,31%) with aneurysm predominant in middle cerebral artery (53,85%) were evaluated. The mean age was 51, 62 (DP 13,04) years old. The mean FIM rate, between the admission and the discharge period, was 34,85 (DP 20,85), with average of 5-69 points (p<0,001). There was non significant correlation between the FIM, Hunt-Hess, Fisher and GOS. The subarachnoid hemorrhage is a catastrophic neurologic event that results in motor and cognitive impairment. The FIM could have an important role in predict the neurorehabilitation outcome in acute aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Film, like the printed imagery inaugurated during the Renaissance, spread ideas – not least the idea of the power of visual art – across not only geographical and political divides but also strata of class and gender. Moving Pictures and Renaissance Art History examines the early flourishing of film, from the 1920s to the mid-1960s, as partly reprising the introduction of mass media in the Renaissance, allowing for innovation that reflected an art free of the control of a patron though required to attract a broad public. Rivalry between word and image, between the demands of narrative and those of visual composition, spurred new ways of addressing the compelling nature of the visual. The twentieth century also saw the development of the discipline of art history; transfusions between cinematic practice and art historical postulates are part of the story told here.

Abstract:
This book investigates the interrelations between aesthetics, ethics, and politics in a variety of visual media forms ranging across art installations, film and television, interactive documentaries, painting, photography, social media and videogames. An international mix of emerging and established authors, with interdisciplinary expertise, explores how different ethical questions, political implications, and aesthetic pleasures arise and shape one another in particular ways in distinct visual media. Investigating themes such as the use of cinema as a medium for ethical and political thought, how documentary subjects both conceal and reveal truth, the new ethical challenges arising from interactive media and the role of images in responding to political events and trauma, this is a groundbreaking work about the interrelations of aesthetic, ethical and political values in visual media.

Abstract:
Scarce attention has been paid to the dimension of sound and its essential role in constructing image, culture, and identity in Chinese film and media. China in the Mix fills a critical void with an original, pioneering study of the connections and intersections of film, media, music, and popular culture in contemporary China under postsocialist reform, capitalist globalization, and hybridization. It explores fascinating topics, including appropriations of popular folklore in the Chinese new wave of the 1980s; Chinese rock ’n’ roll and youth cinema in fin de siècle China; the political-economic impact of free market imperatives and Hollywood pictures on Chinese film industry and filmmaking in the late twentieth century; the reception and adaptation of hip hop; and the emerging role of Internet popular culture and social media in the early twenty-first century. This book examines the articulations and representations of mass culture and everyday life, concentrating on their aural/oral manifestations in contemporary Chinese cinema and in a wide spectrum of media and cultural productions. The research offers the first comprehensive investigation of Chinese film, expressions, and culture from a unique, cohesive acoustic angle and through the prism of global media-cultural exchange. It shows how the complex, evolving uses of sound (popular music, voice-over, silence, noise, and audio mixing) in film and media reflect and engage the important cultural and socio-historical shifts in contemporary China and in the increasingly networked world.

Abstract:
Media narratives in popular culture often ascribe interchangeable characteristics to childhood and old age. In the manner of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By, the authors in this volume envision the presumed semblance between children and the elderly as a root metaphor that finds succinct articulation in the idea that “children are like old people” and vice versa. The volume explores the recurrent use of this root metaphor in literature and media from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The authors demonstrate how it shapes and is reinforced by a spectrum of media products from Western and East-Asian countries. Most the media products addressed were developed for children as their primary audience, and range from children’s classics such as Heidi to recent Dutch children’s books about euthanasia. Various authors also consider narratives produced either for adults (for instance, the TV series Mad Men, and the novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) or for a dual audience (for example, the family film Paddington or The Simpsons). The diversity of these products in terms of geography, production date, and audience buttresses a broad comparative exploration of the connection between childhood and old age, allowing the authors to bring out culturally specific aspects and biases. Finally, since this book also unites scholars from a variety of disciplines (media studies, children’s literature studies, film studies, pedagogy, sociology), the individual chapters provide a range of methods for studying the connection between childhood and old age.

Abstract:
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. The distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music and its critiques have become something of an industry in film music studies lately. There are articles, sections of journal issues, conference sessions, and other activities organized on the topic. As I argued inHearing Film(2001), I have never found the terminology particularly useful, though as many have suggested, we can’t throw out all sense of the distinction that the vocabulary tries to describe. The problem, however, amps up exponentially when video games and Web sites are added to the mix. The use of music in “new media” challenges most of film music studies’ assumptions and presumptions, and these new practices demand new approaches and vocabulary. This chapter focuses on the challenges posed to film music studies models by digital media practices.

Abstract:
The Computer-Animated Film: Industry, Style and Genre is the first academic work to examine the genre identity of the computer-animated film, a global phenomenon of popular cinema that first emerged in the mid-1990s at the intersection of feature-length animated cinema and Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). Widely credited for the revival of feature-length animated filmmaking within contemporary Hollywood, computer-animated films are today produced within a variety of national contexts and traditions. Covering thirty years of computer-animated film history, and analysing over 200 different examples, The Computer-Animated Film: Industry, Style and Genre argues that this international body of work constitutes a unique genre of mainstream cinema. It applies, for the very first time, genre theory to the landscape of contemporary digital animation, and identifies how computer-animated films can be distinguished in generic terms. This book therefore asks fundamental questions about the evolution of film genre theory within both animation and new media contexts. Informed by wider technological discourses and the status of animation as an industrial art form, The Computer-Animated Film: Industry, Style and Genre not only theorises computer-animated films through their formal properties, but connects elements of film style to animation practice and the computer-animated film’s unique production contexts.

Abstract:
Cinema Expanded: Avant-Garde Film in the Age of Intermedia is a comprehensive historical survey of expanded cinema from the mid-1960s to the present. It offers an historical and theoretical revision of the concept of expanded cinema, placing it in the context of avant-garde/experimental film history rather than the history of new media, intermedia, or multimedia. The book argues that while expanded cinema has taken an incredible variety of forms (including moving image installation, multi-screen films, live cinematic performance, light shows, shadow plays, computer-generated images, video art, sculptural objects, and texts), it is nonetheless best understood as an ongoing meditation by filmmakers on the nature of cinema, specifically, and on its relationship to the other arts. Cinema Expanded also extends its historical and theoretical scope to avant-garde film culture more generally, placing expanded cinema in that context while also considering what it has to tell us about the moving image in the art world and new media environment.

This chapter examines how hybrid conceptions of language and media come to challenge representations of literary character and narrative in the modernist period. Understanding Virginia Woolf as a film theorist situated within the ferment of avant-garde film culture in London in the mid-1920s—a period which saw the formation of the journal Close-Up and the London Film Society—the chapter argues that Woolf’s engagement with film and its ‘hieroglyphs’ in her essay ‘The Cinema’ transforms her understanding of language and character in To the Lighthouse. Throughout the late 1920s, Woolf imagines writing as emulating the material and visual form of hieroglyphs, revealing the inscriptions graven upon the ‘sacred tablets’ of the minds and hearts of her characters.

Abstract:
This book traces the historical evolution of Indian cinema through a number of key decades. The book is made up of 14 chapters with each chapter focusing on one key film, the chosen films are analysed in their wider social, political and historical context whilst a concerted engagement with various ideological strands that underpin each film is also evident. In addition to exploring the films in their wider contexts, the book analyses selected sequences through the conceptual framework common to both film and media studies. This includes a consideration of narrative, genre, representation, audience and mise en scène. The case studies run chronologically from Awaara (The Vagabond, 1951) to The Elements Trilogy: Water (2005) and include films by such key figures as Satyajit Ray (The Lonely Wife), Ritwick Ghatak (Cloud Capped Star), Yash Chopra (The Wall) and Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!).

Abstract:
AbstractA relatively small number of global Internet giants—Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Netflix—have come under intense and ongoing fire for precipitating a twin crisis of journalism and the media, destroying democracy, and centralizing control over the Internet. In response, a new wave of Internet regulation is now in the making in one country after another. This chapter agrees that a forceful response to the platforms is overdue but raises concerns that the case against GAFAM + has become orthodoxy, anchored in cherry-picked evidence and a tendency to see these firms as the cause of all perceived woes. I also argue that while attempts to regulate digital platforms by the standards of broadcasting regulation may be politically expedient, this approach rests on superficial analogies. It also ignores the fact that the media industries have developed in close proximity to the vastly larger telecoms, consumer electronics and banking firms since the mid-nineteenth century. The last sections of this chapter offer four principles of structural and behavioural regulation drawn from this history as guides for a new generation of internet regulation today: structural separation (break-ups), line of business restrictions (firewalls), public obligations and public alternatives.

Abstract:
AbstractNew employment demands of a burgeoning Indian software service industry are spawning neo-educational structures, especially in the domain of data sciences through vibrant market mechanisms offering a scalable and industry-focused learning system. Since the 1990s, Indian software firms have developed expertise in carrying out outsourced back-office tasks and mid-level IT services like data entry, managing call centres, and performing software quality testing for foreign companies taking advantage of a technically trained local workforce. The trend of automating manual work practices in the IT industry has generated a different kind of demand for data sciences directed at upskilling and job readiness. India is witnessing a market-oriented groundswell of data science and IT skill tutoring ‘shops’, resituating science and engineering education. In this chapter we report from ethnographic research conducted in two IT skill training parks to underpin arguments about emerging neo-educational learning structures suited to a data science education for new livelihood opportunities in an IT-accredited India. Our chapter makes a case for looking at ‘data studies’ from an ethnographic perspective uncovering a ‘program’ of upward mobility through IT skilling and employment. What directions might data studies about tutoring data science skills in the Indian context lead to? Excerpts presented here from field research imagine new livelihoods, aspirations, and technology skills that are more often than not a reflection of the power of data science education.

This chapter interrogates the ways in which Top Gun’s status as filmic reference point for Hollywood ‘high concept’ of the 1980s has informed speculation around its new millennial reboot, Top Gun: Maverick. With the new film still unreleased at the time of writing, the essay focuses not on the reboot (or even its promotional materials) but on the anticipation of the reboot as ‘discursive project’. Attending to the paratextual arrays that inform and prefigure media events, it focuses on the period in the mid-2010s leading up to the first official publicity still for Top Gun: Maverick to investigate the dynamics of speculation and nostalgia that accompany the ‘anticipation’ of Hollywood reboots.

The rapid spread of mis/disinformation on social media creates a need for teachers to be better educated in how to navigate social media. The existing research suggests that there is a lack of formal requirements to teach about this phenomenon, and this paper helps to answer the call by reviewing the literature. This chapter also provides a helpful new mnemonic device for teachers and a theoretical framework to help justify a critical approach. Ultimately this chapter outlines the need for further study and reinforces the call for further instruction across diverse levels of instruction and curricula to help combat the spread of mis/disinformation.

Jack Benny was not only radio’s biggest star after the mid-1930s, but he was the most visible celebrity in Hollywood. This chapter examines the many ways that Benny’s radio program, and Benny’s performance career, intertwined radio and film, two powerful media industries that were often said to be at war with one another. While media conglomeration today means that performers and story ideas are moved freely across media, there were many impediments to do so in the past. Benny’s radio show was the first to parody popular movies, but he could not mention the radio stars who sold rival products. Benny’s radio-themed films made at Paramount between 1939 and 1941, met with significant box office success and even greater critical disparagement.

Abstract:
This study uses the correlated-k (c-k) and Mie scattering theory to evaluate absorption and scattering properties of participating media for fire suppression environments. In this approach the irregular spectral distribution of the radiative properties is reordered into cumulative distribution functions on a narrow band basis increasing the speed of property evaluation when compared to line-by-line calculations. The spectral properties are determined from the HITEMP database for carbon dioxide and water vapor, along with Mie and Rayleigh scattering theories for water droplets and soot particles, respectively. Results are presented for radiative heat transfer in a 1D domain for several mixtures and show that the attenuation of the radiation is highly sensitive to the water droplet size, mass loading and soot particle concentration.

Abstract:
The scattering of a plane transverse-electric electromagnetic wave with a nonlinear dielectric thin film, which is embedded between two semiinfinite linear media, is theoretically studied. We assume that the nonlinear film can be characterized by an intensity-dependent dielectric constant with a negative Kerr coefficient, and the wave is monochromatic. Exact analytical solutions to Maxwell’s equations for the fields are derived in terms of the Jacobian elliptic sine function. The solutions contain four integration constants, and they are determined by imposing the necessary boundary conditions on the fields. We also find that the reflection and transmission coefficients can exhibit optical bistable and multistable behaviors as a function of the intensity of the incident wave. For a given film thickness and at particular values of the incident intensity, induced transparency and induced resonances can also exist. (12 min)

Abstract:
In this paper we develop an approach to reduce the noise in stationary and quasi-stationary imagery. Temporal filtering consists of two parts; in the first, a motion detector or estimator is applied to determine the displacement fields, and a 1-D filter is applied along the temporal direction. To date, researchers have approached the problem of restoration of time-varying images using FIR filters; however, simpler and more efficient nonlinear filters can be designed. Median filters have been used for image restoration, but they still possess a considerable amount of computational complexity. Therefore we propose the use of max and of min–max ranked temporal filtering, which requires a very small computation effort. In using the temporal max or min–max estimator we consider a model which consists of k consecutive noisy frame observations: [Z n-k (x,y),…, Z n (x,y)]. Each observed frame is Z n (x,y) = S n (x,y) − N n (x,y) where S n (x,y) is the nth signal and N n (x,y) is the added noise. For stationary images, the noisy observation becomes Z n (x,y) = S(x,y) + N n (x,y). Our aim is to estimate the original signal S n (x,y) from k observations [Z n-k (x,y),…, Z n (x,y)]. The max filter is Ŝ n,k = max(Z n-k ,…, Z n ), which produces a biased estimation of S n (x,y). However, the bias is a known random variable hence the original signal can be recovered. Similarly the min-max temporal filter is Š n,k = ½min(Z n-k ,…,Z n ) + ½max(Z n-k ,…,Z n ). The advantage of the min–max over the max filter is that it yields an unbiased estimate of S n (x,y). We derived the output distribution of the filtered signals and found a performance criteria for selecting the number of consecutive frames needed to produce sufficiently accurate estimates of S n (x,y). In particular, letting q n,k = Ŝ n +1 ,k − Ŝ n,k we select k so that q is arbitrarily small with a given probability. This class of filter is suitable for real-time implementation in applications such as electron microscopy and image coding.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The strategy of protecting the traditional glass fibre HEPA filtration train from it’s blinding contamination and the recovery of dust by the means of self cleaning, pre-filtration is a proven means in the reduction of ultimate disposal volumes and has been used within the Fuel Production Industry. However, there is an increasing demand in nuclear applications requiring elevated operating temperatures, fire resistance, moisture resistance and chemical composition that the existing glass fibre HEPA filtration cannot accommodate, which can be remedied by the use of a metallic HEPA filter media. Previous research suggests that the then costs to the Department of Energy (DOE), based on a five year life cycle, was $29.5 million for the installation, testing, removal and disposal of glass fibre HEPA filtration trains. Within these costs, $300 was the value given to the filter and $4,450 was given to the peripheral activity. Development of a low cost, cleanable, metallic, direct replacement of the traditional filter train will the clear solution. The Bergman et al work has suggested that a 1000 ft^3/min, cleanable, stainless HEPA could be commercially available for $5,000 each, whereas the industry has determined that the truer cost of such an item in isolation would be closer to $15,000. This results in a conflict within the requirement between ‘low cost’ and ‘stainless HEPA’. By proposing a system that combines metallic HEPA filtration with the ability to self clean without interrupting the process flow, the need for a tradition HEPA filtration train will be eliminated and this dramatically reduces the resources required for cleaning or disposal, thus presenting a route to reducing ultimate costs. The paper will examine the performance characteristics, filtration efficiency, flow verses differential pressure and cleanability of a self cleaning HEPA grade sintered metal filter element, together with data to prove the contention.

Abstract:
Poly-,Per-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are versatile chemicals that were incorporated in a wide range of products. One of their most important use was in aqueous film-forming foams for fighting liquid fuel fires. PFAS compounds have recently been identified as potential environmental contaminants. In the United States there are hundreds of potential military sites with PFAS contamination. The ERDC designed and constructed a mobile treatment system to address small sites (250,000 gallons or less) and as a platform to field test new adsorptive media. The PFAS Effluent Treatment System (PETS) has cartridge filters to remove sediments and a granular activated carbon (GAC) media filter to remove organic compounds that might compete with PFAS in the ion exchange process, although it may also remove PFAS too. The last process is an ion exchange resin specifically designed to remove PFAS to a target level of 70 ng/L or less (equivalent to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drinking Water Health Advisory). The system was tested at Hurlburt Field, a US Air Force facility in Florida and at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South in Millington, TN.
