Abstract:
PurposeThe aim of this study is to determine the impact of different dimensions of consumer engagement in social media on firm performance in social media.Design/methodology/approachBeyond likes and comments, combined with the interactive behavior of consumer engagement with firms on social media, we proposed a set of metrics for consumer engagement on social media, namely personal engagement, user-interactive engagement, and fan-interactive engagement. We used the fixed-effect model and validated the impact of consumer engagement in different dimensions on firm performance.FindingsThe result shows that personal engagement and user-interactive engagement significantly correlate with firm performance; however, the same effect was not observed in fan-interactive engagement.Originality/valuePrior researches on consumer engagement in social media are mainly about consumer engagement in firm-initiated social media page. In this study, we consider the consumer engagement behavior in firm-initiated and consumer-initiated social media pages, then validate the impact of different dimensions of consumer engagement on firm performance.

Abstract:
Purpose More and more firms are utilizing social media as a distribution channel to sell products. By establishing business accounts on social media firms provide information service to strengthen their relationship with customers and boost sales. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the pricing, information service provision and channel strategies of firms who sell products through social media. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a game theoretical model to study a dual-channel supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer. Two scenarios are considered – under one scenario the manufacturer and under the other the retailer, respectively, solely provides information service. Both firms’ pricing decisions and profits are compared. Findings The authors find that in the dual-channel model with either the manufacturer or the retailer providing information service to enhance the demand: a firm that has stronger social ties with customers is willing to provide more information services; when the manufacturer provides information service, it charges a direct price higher than the wholesale price, and whether the direct-channel price exceeds the retail price depends on the strength of the manufacturer’s social ties with customers; when the retailer provides information service, the direct price is equal to the wholesale price, both lower than the retail price; and a firm always prefers itself rather than the other firm to provide information service. However, the whole supply chain is better off if the manufacturer rather than the retailer provides information service. Research limitations/implications Besides the relationship between firms and customers, the peer relationship among customers also impacts the supply chain performance, which might be studied in the future. Originality/value The study is novel in theoretically exploring the influence of firms’ social relationship with customers on firms’ pricing and channel strategies.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to: first, examine why companies create brand pages in social media, how they use them, what policies and strategies they follow, and what outcomes do they expect; and second – from firms’ point of view – how users are benefited from such pages. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study approach was employed for this study. Data were collected from personal interviews with 14 marketing managers responsible for the social media activity of their company, providing preliminary evidence about the actions firms take, the motivations that led them to getting involved, and the derived outcomes. Findings – The main actions of the firm are making prize competitions, announcing new products/services, interacting with fans, providing advice and useful information, and handling customer service issues. The basic motivations are the increasing popularity of social media, competitors’ presence, headquarters’ strategy, and cost reduction pressure. Interact with customers, create/enhance relationships with customers, brand awareness, customer engagement, promote products/increase of sales, and the more targeted acquisition of new customers, were referred to as the main expected outcomes for companies. Research limitations/implications – Given the qualitative nature of the study and the emerging field of research about social media, findings should be considered as preliminary and exploratory. Interviews with companies from more sectors and also with social media users will provide a more comprehensive view of the topic. Practical implications – The paper identifies several opportunities for company managers, suggesting practices for effective social media handling. Originality/value – Considering the rapid development of social media and their penetration in business marketing actions, this paper is an exploratory step toward the ways firms utilize social media channels.

Abstract:
Purpose – Social media has transformed conventional marketing methods. This medium offers a unique blend of asynchronous communication, opportunities to co-create and customer empowerment far removed from traditional firm-to-consumer, push-vs-pull marketing messages. The purpose of this paper is to examine how a company developed long-term effective relationships and sales growth by using their blog to generate and enhance viral word-of-mouth message diffusion. Design/methodology/approach – The exploration of the blog includes analysis of both content and metrics for a real technology firm with an assumed name. Content and the ripples from blog posts were analysed to determine diffusion and use of messages. Findings – Seven critical success factors for utilising blog marketing to maximum effect are presented to firms considering a similar strategy. Suggestions for managerial implications are also presented. Research limitations/implications – There are two limitations, the focus on a single company which restricts generalisability. The advantage of the case study approach to research does afford depth into this topic. Second, the research questions addresses a small part of the whole social media and corporate marketing sphere, however, this focus allows for depth and richness of data. Originality/value – The paper’s focus provides a unique opportunity to explore the effect of a company who manages points of connection, blogs and viral marketing, on customer relationships. Further, the study responds to the need for practical guidance for managers in relation to the management of blog marketing to facilitate customer relationships and enhance the viral impact of blogs.

Abstract:
3593 Background: FIRE-3 compared first-line therapy with FOLFIRI plus cetuximab (cet) or bevacizumab (bev) in KRAS exon 2 wild-type (wt) patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Recent analyses showed mircoRNA-21 (miR-21) expression level may be a predictive biomarker for anti-EGFR-therapy raising the question whether miR-21 influences gene expression in the EGFR signaling pathway. Methods: Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay identified quantitative miR-21 expression. Median expression was defined as a threshold value to discriminate FIRE-3 population into miR-21 low and high groups. Differential gene expression based on additional mRNA microarray data (Almac Inc, Xcel Array) was calculated by linear models adjusted for multiple testing followed by single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) to compare differentially enriched hallmarks of cancer gene sets. Overall response rate (ORR) was compared using Fisher´s exact test. Median progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier estimation and log-rank test. Results: 333 RAS wt patients provided material for miR-21 expression analysis. In these patients, low miR-21 expression was associated with higher ORR (80.0% vs. 57.9%; p = 0.005) and longer OS (35.8 months (mo) vs. 25.9 mo; p = 0.005) when cet vs bev was added to FOLFIRI. High miR-21 expression was associated with comparable ORR (74.6% vs. 64.0%; p = 0.21) and OS (24.5 mo vs. 23.8 mo; p = 0.4). There was no significant difference in PFS in either group. By comparing miR-21 low and high groups using normalized mRNA microarray data, 538 genes were found to be significantly differentially expressed in RAS wt patients after adjustment for multiple testing. Including data from the two groups into ssGSEA yielded 23 hallmark of cancer gene sets that were significantly differentially enriched; among them, KRAS-signaling showed higher enrichment in the miR-21 high group (adjusted p = 2.09 E-13). Conclusions: MiR-21 expression level might be a predictive biomarker for anti-EGFR-therapy by modulating KRAS signaling in FIRE-3 patients.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore ethical issues related to pharmaceutical marketers’ social media efforts including the prevalence and forms of direct-to-consumer web 2.0 advertising (eDTCA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) messages across social networking sites (SNSs). One goal is to determine if these eDTCA posts comply with draft guidelines issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Design/methodology/approach Content analysis of ten pharmaceutical marketers’ SNS posts documented the frequency and types of posts devoted to eDTCA, drug risks and benefits, CSR, and other purposes. Findings eDTCA represents about 35 percent of all pharmaceutical firm SNS posts and primarily communicates help-seeking messages via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Firms also promote their ethical image through CSR-related posts. These posts primarily highlight employee-focussed and community-focussed initiatives. Analysis of consumer behavior in response to each post shows that eDTCA affects only liking of YouTube videos, but CSR increases behavior responses on all SNSs except LinkedIn. Social implications Despite absence of final guidance, pharmaceutical marketers seem to abide by FDA draft social media guidance. In line with the FDA’s draft fair-balance regulations, almost all product-claim eDTCA posts state both benefit and risk information. Nevertheless, the FDA should issue final eDTCA guidance without delay consistent with traditional media direct-to-consumer advertising guidance. This should benefit consumers through consistency with their existing advertising literacy competencies. Originality/value The study represents an initial attempt to document ethical issues in the current state-of-the-practice of pharmaceutical social media marketing related to eDTCA and CSR.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the interplay between board-level governance characteristics, ownership concentration and firm performance in the Italian corporate landscape, which is characterized by high (though varying) degrees of ownership concentration. The empirical setting of this study is the Italian stock market and specifically a sample of non-financial firms included in FTSE MIB and mid-cap index of Milan stock exchange, spanning a five-year time period from 2011 up to 2015. We regressed an accounting proxy for firm performance, namely the return-on-asset (ROA) ratio, on several board-level governance variables and specifically board size, board independence, CEO-chairman duality and audit committee (ACD) full independence. In doing so, we also controlled for the impact of different levels of ownership concentration by partitioning the sample into firms with lower and-higher-than-median values of ownership concentration (OC). The empirical results indicate that board characteristics differently impact performance in firms with lower levels of OC compared to firms with higher OC. Specifically, in lower-OC firms, board independence and AC full independence have a negative impact, whereas CEO duality (either alone or interacted with board independence) has a positive impact on performance. Conversely, higher-OC firms benefit from a large board size and are negatively affected by AC independence, while the remaining variables are not significant. The key insight to be gained from our evidence is that the individual and interaction effects of board-level mechanisms may be contingent on the presence of other governance mechanisms (in this instance, the degree of ownership concentration). As such, this research adds to the existing literature questioning the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to corporate boards. In terms of practical implications, our findings support the notion that firms might consider the potential interaction and substitution effects between governance mechanisms and structure boards accordingly.

Abstract:
Large-scale training sets enabling quantitative reconstructions of past fire parameters are needed to better assess potential effects of increased fire hazard under global warming conditions. The aim of this article is to validate recently developed continental regression equations for the reconstruction of fire number, intensity and size. These transfer functions were built by linking satellite data and charcoal collected in annually sampled sediment traps. We apply these European regression equations to four annually layered lakes located on a North–South gradient in Europe. Down-core annual microscopic charcoal (MIC) and macroscopic charcoal (MAC) influx values were compared with satellite-derived time series of fire number, fire intensity and area burned. Results show that the match between predicted and observed values improves when the overall mean and median of sampled years (12 and 9 years) are considered. Especially, the comparisons of median values show a very good agreement between charcoal-inferred and satellite-observed fire-regime parameters. MIC-based predictions underestimate the variability of the observed fire parameters and MAC-based predictions overestimate it. Our results imply that median values of the fire parameters can be reconstructed well by using MIC and MAC, while it is more difficult to infer the variability of fire-regime parameters. However, when MIC- and MAC-based predictions are pooled together, the fit between observed and predicted values increases for both medians and variability. This finding suggests that MIC and MAC are complementary proxies, thus best sedimentary fire reconstructions may be achieved when they are used together. We conclude that sediment traps can be used for the construction of continental-scale training sets and that their results can be applied to Holocene sedimentary charcoal sequences.

Abstract:
In 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration investigated the sources of multiple outbreaks of salmonellosis. Epidemiologic and traceback investigations identified Maradol papayas as the suspect vehicles. During the investigations, the genomes of 55 Salmonella enterica that were isolated from papaya samples were sequenced. Serovar assignments and phylogenetic analysis placed the 55 isolates into ten distinct groups, each representing a different serovar. Within-serovar SNP differences are generally between 0 and 20 SNPs, while the median between-serovar distance is 51 812 SNPs. We observed two groups with SNP distances between 21 and 100 SNPs. These relatively large within-serovar SNP distances may indicate that the isolates represent either diverse populations or multiple, genetically distinct subpopulations. Further inspection of these cases with traceback evidence allowed us to identify an 11th population. We observed that high levels of genomic diversity from individual firms is possible, with one firm yielding five of the ten serovars. Also, high levels of diversity are possible within small geographic regions, as five of the serovars were isolated from papayas that originated from farms located in Armería and Tecomán, Colima. In addition, we identified AMR genes that are present in three of the serovars studied here (aph(3’)-lb, aph(6)-ld, tet(C), fosA7, and qnrB19) and we detected the presence of the plasmid IncHI2A among S. Urbana isolates.

Abstract:
The object of the study is the movie "One Hundred Days after Childhood", one of the most famous Soviet films of the mid-1970s, dedicated to school and schoolchildren (the so-called "school cinema"). The subject of the study is the cultural meanings new to this genre, broadcast by the film, the phenomena of Soviet culture that made this broadcast possible and significant for Soviet cinema, as well as the expressive means of the film, indicating changes in Soviet culture and, in particular, in pedagogical strategies compared with the early 1960s ("thaw era"). The purpose of the study was to identify the role played by this film in the development of the theme of the school in Soviet cinema, as well as to establish those trends in Soviet culture of the 1960s and 1970s that made this development possible. As the main research method, a theoretical and cultural analysis of the most significant elements of the plot was used, representing both the key ideas of the Soviet "school cinema" and the most significant phenomena for Soviet culture of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result of the study, the role of classical Russian literature in the education of the most significant human qualities of Soviet schoolchildren for the period under consideration was established. In addition, the very fact of the appearance of this film suggests that the model of socialization peculiar to the Soviet school up to the early 1960s has lost its relevance, and the new model was still in the formative stage.

Abstract:
Film music varies tremendously across genre in order to bring about different responses in an audience. For instance, composers may evoke passion in a romantic scene with lush string passages or inspire fear throughout horror films with inharmonious drones. This study investigates such phenomena through a quantitative evaluation of music that is associated with different film genres. We construct supervised neural network models with various pooling mechanisms to predict a film’s genre from its soundtrack. We use these models to compare handcrafted music information retrieval (MIR) features against VGGish audio embedding features, finding similar performance with the top-performing architectures. We examine the best-performing MIR feature model through permutation feature importance (PFI), determining that mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and tonal features are most indicative of musical differences between genres. We investigate the interaction between musical and visual features with a cross-modal analysis, and do not find compelling evidence that music characteristic of a certain genre implies low-level visual features associated with that genre. Furthermore, we provide software code to replicate this study at https://github.com/usc-sail/mica-music-in-media. This work adds to our understanding of music’s use in multi-modal contexts and offers the potential for future inquiry into human affective experiences.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between customer participation, co-created value and customer engagement as well as customer motivation involved in this process. Design/methodology/approach Respondents were randomly exposed to one of the six types of social media scenarios. A total of 181 respondents were drawn from an MTurk opt-in survey panel of individuals who resided in America and were over the age of 18 years. Findings Overall, the results of this study showed that as the level of customer participation increased, the level of co-created value decreased. The relationship between customer participation and customer engagement was fully mediated by co-created value. Extrinsic motivation was found to moderate the relationship between customer participation and co-created value but did not moderate the relationship between customer participation and customer engagement. Moreover, customer engagement was at its highest when an external reward was not offered, in other words, when customers were intrinsically motivated. Furthermore, when an external reward was offered, a significant effect of privacy concern on customer engagement was observed. Originality/value The study extends the current understanding of customer engagement through value co-creation, customer participation and perceptions of privacy in firm-initiated activities in social media.

Abstract:
In the period between 1965 and 1967, a series of acts of violence took place against Italian capelloni (young men with long hair). These attacks frequently ended with an attempted or actual cutting of these young men's hair. This article analyses how these incidents were represented in newspapers, teen magazines, and in the short film Il mostro della domenica by Steno (Stefano Vanzina, 1968) featuring Totò. Drawing on literature about the shaving of French and Italian collaborationist women in the aftermath of the Second World War (Virgili 2002), it explores the potential gender anxieties caused by young men's long hairstyles, as represented by the media. The attacks on the capelloni are interpreted as a punishment for the male appropriation of a traditionally feminine attribute of seduction: the cutting of young men's hair symbolically reaffirmed an ideal of virile masculinity in a moment of ‘decline of virilism’ (Bellassai 2011) in Italian society.

Abstract:
Fire severity, defined as the degree of environmental change caused by a fire, is a critical fire regime attribute of interest to fire emissions modelling and post-fire rehabilitation planning. Remotely sensed fire severity is traditionally assessed by the differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR). This spectral index captures fire-induced reflectance changes in the near infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral regions. This study evaluates a spectral index based on a band combination including the NIR and mid infrared (MIR) spectral regions, the differenced normalized difference vegetation index with mid infrared (dNDVIMID), to assess fire severity. This evaluation capitalized upon the unique opportunity stemming from the pre- and post-fire airborne acquisitions over the Rim (2013) and King (2014) fires in California with the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) instrument. The field data consist of 85 Geometrically structured Composite Burn Index (GeoCBI) plots. In addition, six different index combinations, respectively three with a NIR–SWIR combination and three with a NIR–MIR combination, were evaluated based on the optimality of fire-induced spectral displacements. The optimality statistic ranges between zero and one, with values of one representing pixel displacements that are unaffected by noise. The results show that the dNBR demonstrated a stronger relationship with GeoCBI field data when field measurements over the two fire scars were combined than the dNDVIMID approaches. The results yielded an R2 of 0.68 based on a saturated growth model for the best performing dNBR index, whereas the performance of the dNDVIMID indices was lower with an R2 = 0.61 for the best performing dNDVIMID index. The dNBR also outperformed the dNDVIMID in terms of spectral optimality across both fires. The best performing dNBR index yielded median optimality statistics of 0.56 over the Rim and 0.60 over the King fire. The best performing dNDVIMID index recorded optimality values of 0.49 over the Rim and 0.46 over the King fire. We also found that the dNBR approach led to considerable differences in the form of the relationship with the GeoCBI between the two fires, whereas the dNDVIMID approach yielded comparable relationships with the GeoCBI over the two fires. This suggests that the dNDVIMID approach, despite its slightly lower performance than the dNBR, may be a more robust method for estimating and comparing fire severity over large regions. This premise needs additional verification when more air- or spaceborne imagery with NIR and MIR bands will become available with a spatial resolution that allows ground truthing of fire severity.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to marketing communications literature by exploring consumer responses to covert advertising (CA) in a social media context. Design/methodology/approach The persuasion knowledge model was used to explore the impact of CA on brand evaluations. A factorial design experiment was conducted in a social media context (YouTube). Findings The results of the study show that triggering knowledge about CA changes the way consumers respond to unfamiliar brands that use such tactics. This implies that for unfamiliar brands, with future development of persuasion knowledge, CA in social media will not only be ineffective but also detrimental with damaging effects on the brand. Research limitations/implications An important contribution of this study lies in the application of the persuasion knowledge model to social media context. Practical implications The results indicate that firms should desist from covert product and brand communications in social media contexts, and instead employ disclosed brand communications. Originality/value Given that the effects of CA have not been investigated in an online context, this study makes a unique contribution to brand communications research by providing valuable insights and better understanding of the effects of CA in social media, specifically YouTube.

Abstract:
The California strawberry industry has unfairly suffered through two food safety events in the past 2 years. In June 1996, an outbreak of a parasitic disease, Cyclospora, involved consumers in several cities in the United States and Canada. Initial reports linked the disease to consumption of strawberries from California; however, it was later determined that the likely source of the outbreak was raspberries imported from Guatemala. The impact of the initial reports implicating California strawberries was severe and resulted in industry losses of $20 to $40 million. In Mar. 1997, children in Michigan became ill from the consumption of frozen strawberries grown in Mexico and processed by a California firm. The incident clearly did not involve fresh strawberries nor California fields. Again, initial reports were not specific and the industry suffered losses estimated at $15 million. Comments will focus on the California Strawberry Commission's crisis preparedness plan, how the industry responded to these food scares, what the strawberry industry has learned, and the resulting and continuing government response to these events.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to put forward a definition of corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) which is relevant to the study of complex organizations and in particular, the multinational enterprise (MNE). This paper then offers a framework as a foundation to discuss the institutional complexity of CSI to aid international business (IB) scholars, practitioners and policymakers achieve a clearer understanding of the mechanisms that may penalize and subsequently deter MNE irresponsibility. Design/methodology/approach In presenting the approaches taken by social regulation researchers and IB policy scholars to understand MNE irresponsibility, this paper proposes a definition of CSI and explicates the various mechanisms associated with deterring MNEs from behaving irresponsibly. Findings Therefore, how can MNEs be deterred from behaving irresponsibly? To further the research agenda concerning CSI in IB, far less common are a definition of CSI relevant to the complex IB context; and a framework that explicates both the legal and social components of CSI, particularly as they unfold in a complex, diverse and often divergent institutional landscape. Overcoming these two primary obstacles is important because when complexities associated with CSI emerge, researchers need to be able to ascertain and expound upon what they are observing so that comparisons can be made and more MNE CSI research can be accrued over time. Research limitations/implications To help the development of future research, we offered a more precise definition of CSI, one which is more relevant to the study of the MNE and the complex contemporary IB environment. By embracing complexities, this paper also outlines an institutional complexity approach, one which highlights both the role of formal and informal regulatory institutions. Though IB has traditionally focused on the role of formal regulation, there is much more to be unearthed by exploring the additional and concurrent influence of social regulatory institutions. Practical implications There is a high level of heterogeneity in the motivations and modes used by MNEs to enter international markets, which likely influence efforts made by these firms to adapt to different types of formal and social institutional pressures. When firms invest significantly in a market, they have a greater economic dependence in that market and institutions have a greater opportunity to exert pressures. For instance, foreign direct investment requires a higher level of (longer-term) commitment, transfer of capital, exchange of expertise and learning, meaning that firms depend much more on local authorities to perform in the market and accomplish their goals. Social implications Enabled by new technologies and, particularly, social media platforms, stakeholders can now engage in organized forms of regulatory activities, as is evident in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, black lives matter and gender equality social activist movements. Through prominent collective actions, the impacts of globally organized social movements may be increasingly non-location bound, placing MNE managers at the heart of new challenges and opportunities to engage with global stakeholders. Infomediaries such as the press, have always been of historical importance, due to their role in shaping stakeholder expectations and opinions of the firm and thus, the reputation and legitimacy of that firm. Originality/value This study enriches the understanding of what CSI is, why we are likely to observe it in practice and how it affects MNEs. This paper offers a definition of CSI that is sufficiently nuanced to capture the complexity of the contemporary IB environment, as well as a framework that, this paper proposes, presents a clearer understanding of the institutional mechanisms that may deter MNEs from behaving irresponsibly. By encouraging scholars to examine the institutional complexity of MNE CSI, the paper hopes to contribute toward building a bridge which connects the IB policy and social regulation research streams.

Abstract:
This article explores interviews with eighteen Norwegian English teachers about the learning value of films in the lower secondary classroom. The films that these teachers talk about are mostly fiction films about conditions in the English-speaking world or film adaptations of literary texts. This article focuses on the teachers’ reasoning about fiction films. I use perspectives from critical discourse analysis (CDA) to explore how the teachers justify their choices and what notions of films they can be seen to rely on. There appears to be some sort of general agreement in the field of English teaching that films deserve a place in the classroom. Still, notions about the value of classroom film use might represent a blind spot that has escaped scrutiny. Keywords: fiction films, EFL teaching, critical discourse analysis, teachers’ discursive practices

Abstract:
As Italian society struggles to come to terms with the presence of Chinese immigrants and with changing global patterns of industrialisation and shifts in the dynamics of industrial power, the question of Sino-Italian relations is increasingly present in Italian cultural representations across media and genre. Among the themes which recur within Italian discourse on Chinese industry are Made in Italy vs Made in China, tradition vs modernity, and environmental responsibility. In this paper, I offer a reading of the complex and, at times, ambivalent treatment of these themes in Gianni Amelio's 2006 film, La stella che non c’è (The Missing Star), and Alessandro Perissinotto's 2014 novel, Coordinate d'Oriente (Oriental Coordinates). Central to my analysis of the two works is an examination of the trope of contacts between the economies and societies of the two countries being sublimated in the fictional narratives into relationships between Western men and Chinese women. Against this backdrop, I propose an interpretation of the power dynamics which underpin the narratives.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to help develop the understanding of the nature of coopetition (collaboration as well as competition) and is set in the context of a Taekwondo organisation. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were undertaken with 25 instructors in various clubs within New Zealand’s “International Taekwondo” (ITKD) together with 25 students and supplemented with triangulation against secondary data such as websites and media reports. Findings – The findings suggest that coopetition can be seen from various perspectives in order that the organisation as a whole benefits. Specifically, while the ITKD is a not-for-profit firm, individual clubs may compete for revenue from students joining them as opposed to rival clubs. However, clubs collaborate in various way such as once registered, students can train free at rival clubs and resources are to some extent pooled so the ITKD as a whole benefits, e.g. sending competitors overseas and bringing in senior people to undertake a promotion grading. Originality/value – The contribution is to offer insights into the nature of coopetition at the sports marketing/entrepreneurship interface by suggesting that the potential paradox of collaboration and competition can be explained by considering the benefits to an overall organisation as opposed to individual clubs within it.

Abstract:
Purpose – Supply chain disruptions have dominated business planning and performance since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to mar organizations through 2022. This research carefully examines the role of organizational culture in developing both supply chain resilience and market performance amid supply chain disruptions. Design/Methodology/Approach – An empirical study of over 200 South Korean firms were tested. The model is tested using PLS-SEM; furthermore, mediation effects enrich the quality of the findings. This research is framed utilizing the stimulus-organism-response model; thus, emphasizing the highly dynamic business environment that has ensued. Findings – The research confirms that supply chain disruption orientation, a strategic orientation and a proxy for a well-prepared organizational culture, leads to both supply chain resilience and market performance. Results also confirm that resilience reinforces market performance throughout the supply chain. Study contributions suggest that firms should consider themselves as organisms within a highly dynamic environment and develop a highly prepared organizational culture in order to bolster supply chain resilience and market performance. Research Implications – Scholars can further employ the stimulus-organism-response model in firm-level research and further study the link between organizational culture and supply chain performance amid COVID-19. Finally, the results of this research provide guidelines for organizations when they decide on operational procedures during the pandemic, as they aim to produce greater returns for their ventures.

AbstractThe mid-Holocene (ca. 8000–4000 cal yr BP) was a time of marked aridity throughout much of Minnesota, and the changes due to mid-Holocene aridity are seen as an analog for future responses to global warming. In this study, we compare the transition into (ca. 9000–7000 yr ago) and out of (ca. 5000–2500 yr ago) the mid-Holocene (MH) period at Kimble Pond and Sharkey Lake, located along the prairie forest ecotone in south-central Minnesota, using high resolution (∼ 5–36 yr) sampling of pollen, charcoal, sediment magnetic and loss-on-ignition properties. Changes in vegetation were asymmetrical with increasing aridity being marked by a pronounced shift from woodland/forest-dominated landscape to a more open mix of grassland and woodland/savanna. In contrast, at the end of the MH, grassland remained an important component of the landscape despite increasing effective moisture, and high charcoal influxes (median 2.7–4.0 vs. 0.6–1.7 mm2 cm− 2 yr− 1 at start of MH) suggest the role of fire in limiting woodland expansion. Asymmetric vegetation responses, variation among and within proxies, and the near-absence of fire today suggest caution in using changes associated with mid-Holocene aridity at the prairie forest boundary as an analog for future responses to global warming.

Abstract:
These days, the eradication of bacterial infections is more difficult due to the mechanism of resistance that bacteria have developed towards traditional antibiotics. One of the medical strategies used against bacteria is the therapy with drug delivery systems. Non-ionic vesicles are nanomaterials with good characteristics for encapsulating drugs, due to their bioavailability and biodegradability, which allow the drugs to reach the specific target and reduce their side effects. In this work, the antibiotic Rifamycin S was encapsulated. The rifamycin antibiotics family has been widely used against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but recent studies have also shown that rifamycin S and rifampicin derivatives have bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. In this work, a strain of S. aureus was selected to study the antimicrobial activity through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) assay. Three formulations of niosomes were prepared using the thin film hydration method by varying the composition of the aqueous phase, which included MilliQ water, glycerol solution, or PEG400 solution. Niosomes with a rifamycin S concentration of 0.13 μg/g were satisfactorily prepared. Nanovesicles with larger size and higher encapsulation efficiency (EE) were obtained when using glycerol and PEG400 in the aqueous media. Our results showed that niosomes consisting of an aqueous glycerol solution have higher stability and EE across a diversity of temperatures and pHs, and a lower MIC of rifamycin S against S. aureus.

The article examines Soviet film politics in the context of socio-cultural processes. The ambivalence of the impact of personal-personal, institutional, and geopolitical factors, the «cold war» is shown. The creation of unique films of high artistic value took place against the backdrop of the imagogical and ideological conservation of the Soviet media space. Therefore, in the period under review, there was an escalation of tension in relations between the authorities and the cinematic intelligentsia. This stage became a kind of «autumn marathon» of Soviet cinema politics, associated with the coexistence of counter tendencies – the formal-ritual reproduction of the system and the increasingly manifested ideological and intellectual rejection in order to gain creative and political freedom.

Abstract:
In her ”true” stories Buried Alive and Asylum Granted Liza Marklund, Swedish journalist and crime writer, acts as a ghost writer for Maria Eriksson’s presumed life story of abuse, hiding and flight to the USA where she, according to Marklund’s novel, was granted asylum. In 2008 the journalist Monica Antonsson published Mia – The Truth About Buried Alive. In the book she questions the factual background of Buried Alive. Marklund argued that although some changes were made to make identification of the characters more difficult, the bulk of the story was factually correct. Antonsson’s book initiated a heated debate in webloggs in 2009. When faced with Antonsson’s critique, former fans of Marklund accused her of being a liar, protected by politicians as well as the so called media elite. In this article, the debate about Buried Alive and Marklund’s position as a popular and influential feminist, is analyzed as a manifestation of a mediatized logic consisting of the ongoing intimization, feminization and commercialization of the public sphere, which ultimately deprofessionalizes the traditional role of the writer as well as the journalist. The users of social media precipitate this development. It is argued that this intimization process is part of a desire for a new realism, elaborated in ”true stories” in both literature, film, reality shows and the art world. Buried Alive and Asylum Granted are a mixture of fact and fiction – faction – which has its roots in contemporary reality culture as well as tabloid journalism. When negotiating about truth and lies in these books, thus reconstructing a traditional discourse of accusation, the bloggers forced Marklund to defend herself. This shows that Marklund’s Buried Alive not only creates a naive emotive reader craving for the truth, but also a new ”fourth estate” public position for amateur users of social media.

While rust can be protective under passive and inert regions found on the Pourbaix diagram, it becomes interesting to see whether its stability is compromised under harsh conditions that lead to active dissolution of this porous interface. Thermodynamics calculations can predict phase transformation, which nucleation and growth is governed by the chemical activity of the porous interfaces as well as by the saturation of the electrolyte solution. Understanding the electrochemical interface is a major challenge to unravel the corrosion mechanism of porous systems. The heterogeneous nature of the oxide structure as well as the development of amorphous gel regions influences the formation of active sites and point defects with a high lability for reacting with gas phases dissolved, entrapped, or occluded within interfacial substructures. The stabilization and corrosion protection of the rust interface requires to understand the adsorption of corrosion inhibitors on the surface of the active site on the electrode ‒ creating a stable protective passive film. Enthalpy and entropy of the dissolution process can explain the spontaneous formation of a rust layer as well as the displacement of water molecules, which ultimately will result in the effective physico-chemical adsorption of the inhibitor molecules. In summary, this communication is aimed to present the role of rust at a glance, and its implications on the electrochemical corrosion mechanisms on porous interfaces. The application of electrochemical fundamentals and first principles combined with state of the art electrochemical, chemical and surface characterization techniques provides a comprehensive vision and mission on current trends in corrosion and protection of steel in porous media.

Abstract:
Annotation. Due to the uncontrolled use of antibiotics, the issue of antibiotic resistance has become vitally important. Search the alternative antimicrobials preparation is urgent question. Despite significant achievements in dentistry, the quality of root canals endodontic treatment remains relevant issue. Enterococcus faecalis is one of the ESKAPE group pathogen as well as one of the most common causative agents of intracanal caries. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) have shown high efficacy against several polyresistant strains. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to evaluate the possibility of AgNPs using to create composite dental materials with antimicrobial activity. Statistical processing of the obtained results was performed using the software package for statistical data processing Graph Pud Prism 8 with the definition of the Student's criterion. The antibacterial effect of Ag NPs was evaluated against the clinical strain of E. faecalis by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (serial dilution method) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (direct inoculation of the microorganism from liquid onto solid media). The influence of AgNPs on the multiplication of the bacterial population and on the processes of biofilm formation were investigated. The MIC and MBC were 2.5 µg / ml. Time-kill curve of E. faecalis strain indicates the need for prolonged contact of microorganisms with the nanosilver preparation and reflect a gradual decrease in the number of bacteria in the sample. AgNPs inhibit the formation of biofilms in the early stages and effectively affect 3-days biofilms. The action of the silver nanoparticles at the initiation stage reduced the total volume of the unformed biofilm by 2 times at concentrations of 10 and 20 MICs. The inhibitory effect of silver on the formed 3-day biofilm was dose-dependent and increased with increasing concentration. The obtained results show AgNPs inhibit the growth and reproduction of planktonic and film forms of E. faecalis and can be used to create dental composite with antimicrobial activity.

Abstract:
Abstract Autologous (AuSCT) and allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) are well established post-remissional strategies for patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). However, there is still a debate ongoing about the relative merit of each of these options in first CR. Minimal residual disease (MRD) may be a useful tool to stratify AML patients into categories of risk which can benefit from differentiated post-remissional approaches. To address this issue, we analysed retrospectively, a series of 123 patients affected with AML in whom flow-cytometry serial determinations of MRD were available, at established time-points (post-induction, post-consolidation, post-stem cell transplantation). All were entered into the EORTC/GIMEMA protocols AML10/AML12 (age <61 yrs) or AML13 (age>61 yrs), all consisting in intensive induction and consolidation cycles, and, for patients aged <61 years, AuSCT or SCT. Median age was 52 years (range 18–78), no APL cases were included in the study. The “Maximally Selected Rank Statistic” analysis was used to select the MRD level and the time-point of analysis achieving the best prognostic significance in terms of overall survival (OS) and relapse free survival (RFS). This test was specifically developed to find out the optimal cut-off for a given biological variable correlating with clinical parameters of interest. This approach confirmed the threshold of 3.5x10−4 residual leukemic cells after consolidation therapy, as a discriminator between MRD− and MRD+ cases with different 5-years OS (64% vs. 14%, P<.001) and RFS (68% vs. 13%, P<.001). Therefore, among these 123 patients, we enucleated 2 groups of patients which underwent stem cell transplant procedure, 53 AuSCT and 11 SCT. The two subgroups were balanced in terms of FAB categories, WBC count, karyotype and expression of MDR-1 phenotype; 34/64 (53%) were MRD+ (9 SCT, 25 AuSCT) and 30/64 (47%) were MRD− (1 SCT, 28 AuSCT). Among the 53 patients submitted to AuSCT, MRD− had a significant better outcome than those MRD+, both in terms of 5-years OS (68% vs. 24%, P=0.003) and RFS (68% vs. 11%, P<.001). In the SCT group the low numbers hampered any firm conclusion; however, when the category of post-consolidation MRD+ patients was separately analysed, the use of SCT was associated with a better RFS (49% vs. 11%, P=NS); we assume that the lack of statistical significance was merely due to the few cases in the SCT group. In conclusion, the threshold of 3.5x10−4 at post-consolidation check-point is critical to predict disease outcome; MRD− patients have an excellent outcome regardless of the post-consolidation therapy; in the MRD+ group, AuSCT seems not to improve the prognosis whereas the use of SCT is associated with a superior outcome, although a larger number of patients is required to confirm this assumption. Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 2720 Treatment strategies based on second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as Nilotinib, have improved overall chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment results, with a rapid and major molecular remission (MCR), at 12 months rate ranging 75%. Therefore, the detection of residual leukemic cells by measuring BCR-ABL1 transcript level is absolutely required to monitor minimal residual disease. To investigate the molecular therapeutic efficacy of nilotinib 400 mg BID in previously untreated, ECP, Philadelphia-positive CML patients, the Italian GIMEMA CML Working Party is conducting an multicenter phase II study (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00481052). The primary endpoint is the CCgR rate at 1 year. The kinetic of molecular response is being studied by Q-PCR at baseline and after 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months from treatment start by a TaqMan absolute quantitative PCR (Applied Biosystems 7900HT Fast Real-Time PCR System) and by the 12.765 Digital array (Fluidigm) which is is a nanofluidic biochip consisting in twelve panels, each containing 765 individual reaction chambers of 6 nL volume. Fluidigm analysis was done in parallel on same samples (at diagnosis,1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, and were possible at 18 and 24 months). Patient with longest follow up was 727 days. A Major Molecular Response, defined as a BCR-ABL:ABL ratio <0.1% according to the International Scale, and obtained by conventional RT-PCR was already achieved in 52% at 3 months, 66% at 6 months 73% at 9 months and 85% at 12 months. The median BCR-ABL transcripts level at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months was 0.063, 0.018, 0.018 and 0.006, respectively. On 73 patients with the longest follow up, a complete molecular response (CMR) defined as a BCR-ABL:ABL ratio <0.0032%IS and a negative nested PCR, was achieved in 7 patients at 12 months. The log-reduction in BCR-ABL/ABL level at 3 months was predictive of the probability of MMR at 12 months. Probability to obtain a MMR at 12 months was of 42%, 62% and 95%, respectively. The molecular results achieved in our study strongly support the notion that in early chronic phase CML patients molecular responses to nilotinib are substantially faster and “deeper” than those to IM. More rapid reduction of residual disease might help to reduce failures and to improve the late outcome of therapy. Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the contribution of social media teams to firm social media performance. Although social media teams are tasked with planning, executing and optimizing the social media marketing effort of firms, little systematic research has examined their roles. Drawing on social cognitive theory, the present study develops collective social media efficacy as a key mechanism to explain the contribution of social media teams to firm social media performance.Design/methodology/approachThe study tested a conceptual framework in which social media team members' previous experience, short-term training and online resources use contribute to collective social media efficacy. In turn, collective social media efficacy is hypothesized to enhance firm social media performance. The study employed primary data and PROCESS macro to test its proposed hypotheses.FindingsThe findings revealed that previous social media experience, short-term training and online resources use contributed to firm social media performance by enabling social media teams to build strong collective social media efficacy.Originality/valueThe findings offer novel insights into how firms can optimize their social media marketing effort by systematically managing their social media teams. The findings add to the nascent literature on the organizational influences of social media performance.

Abstract:
Contemporary media industry and production studies takes a nuanced view of the relative independence and autonomy available to media producers. In this article, I apply this frame to the Australian independent screen production firm Kennedy Miller Mitchell. But rather than examining the firm through its commercial partnerships, I analyze its independence in respect of its historical relationship with Australian government agencies. I contend that it possesses negotiated dependencies with these government bodies, a term describing the nuances of a complex reciprocal relationship. While the firm’s activities have been shaped and constrained by government policy, I argue also that the firm has maintained agency through negotiations with the state. My analysis of Kennedy Miller Mitchell’s negotiated dependencies qualifies our understanding of this reputedly iconoclastic firm and treats the company as a significant case study of the limits of independence and autonomy in an industry underwritten by government intervention.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to use the institutional perspective to jointly explore the underlying motives that drive Chinese private small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in the developed economy of Germany and the role China’s institutional environment is playing in this context. Design/methodology/approach Given the lack of recent in-depth studies, the authors use multiple case study method to present rich insights from elite interviews with executives belonging to seven Chinese SMEs and industry experts, as well as the study of firm documents, social media and the latest governmental policies. Findings The results indicate not only market-, resource- and strategic asset-seeking motives, but contrary to the literature, also efficiency-seeking goals. Further driving factors are the integration in global value chains and high degrees of entrepreneurial orientation. The second major finding is that China’s institutional environment induces widely divergent effects. Its ministries established new outward foreign direct investments (OFDI) support measures that are beneficial for some SMEs’ post-entry operations. However, some firms are not aware of any support measures or suffer from discrimination that hinders innovation and from which they try to escape by investing abroad. Originality/value This paper considers different levels of analysis (firm, entrepreneur, institutional environment) to investigate Chinese SMEs’ motives in Europe’s largest market. By examining why and how these firms use OFDI to a developed economy, the authors address an essential question for China’s economy that is of primary political and academic concern (“How can China get that improved innovation that often seeds entrepreneurial growth?”). In addition, the study contributes to the growing discussion of institutional escapism in emerging markets by revealing five institutional hardships Chinese SMEs are facing and how this relates to their internationalization.

In the year 2000, the directors of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology decided to add moving images to their Library of Natural Sounds. By that time, the sound library had been building for more than 70 years and had become the world's largest archive of animal sounds. The decision to add video and film to the world-renowned audio archive expanded the mission of the Library toward the archival of animal behavior recordings writ large. The new multimedia archive was renamed the Macaulay Library, after our principal patrons Linda and William Macaulay, and was re-branded as a medium-agnostic resource for zoological natural history recordings.

Abstract:
Silver halide microfilm on a polyester base has been proven to last under reasonable storage conditions for in excess of 1,000 years. We would expect it to be the ideal choice for materials that we want for our “permanent” collections – that is for collections we expect to have, if not forever, then for a long time to come. Microfilm is, moreover, human-readable, which means that if in 1,000 years we no longer have the equipment we have today for getting to the information we have stored on discs or other storage media, good old reliable microfilm can still yield up whatever was stored in this fashion with nothing more sophisticated than a magnifying glass. Providing people still are able to read in a 1,000 years, if indeed people still exist.

Abstract:
This article explores how international over-the-top services impact the national feature film value chain in Canada and Australia. The main objective of this exploration is to interrogate the tendency to classify Netflix as television—whether in the context of broadcasting policy or in light of disciplinary biases that tend to separate media industry studies from the more cinephilic text-focused approaches of film studies. By equating entertainment services like Netflix with television, the discussion of how feature films will sustain themselves in a rapidly changing market becomes sidelined. Examining examples from Canada and Australia, we seek to draw attention to the ways in which film sustains and develops its industry and how services like Netflix relate to policy mechanisms designed to foster national cinema. This article offers an intervention into the developing discourse around Netflix as television to ask the question: what does it mean to consider Netflix as cinema?
