Abstract:
For my BFA Capstone exhibition Preying For a Miracle I analyzed the Biblical book of Job found in the Old Testament in relation to my own life. My interest in the Book of Job stems from a human desire to understand suffering, especially suffering that is unprovoked. At the beginning of the book of Job, Job is described as “blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil”. (Job 1:1) As the first chapter of the book progresses, Satan comes to God and presents a wager. Satan insinuates that Job is only faithful to God because God has “put a hedge around him”. (Job 1:9) Satan proposes that he can make Job curse God’s name if he removes the abundant blessings he has received. God accepts this wager and declares that as long as Job’s life is spared Satan can do with him as he wants, which begins a series of brutal trials. I found myself asking how can such violence and human suffering be justified?

Abstract:
My research focuses on how the Church of Milan related in many ways with the industrial labour’s world during the transformations triggered by the economic development that hit some part of Italy between 1953 and the mid-Sixty’s – and by the Second Vatican Council (1958-1965) from its calling to its completion. I mostly referred to original papers stored in the Archivio diocesano di Milano (Archive of the diocese of Milan) and in the Archivio per la storia del movimento sociale cattolico in Italia (Archive for the history of the catholic social movement in Italy) at the Università cattolica di Milano (Catholic University of Milan) analysing them through the comparison with reviews and journals of the time, also exploiting the main critical studies related to these issues. Within this frame, my research contributes to reveal the conflicts but also the dynamism of the Ambrosian Catholicism mostly supported by the political debate and by the economical and social transformations that the Italian society was undergoing in those period. The Milanese dioceses presents itself – in the time span between the mid Fifties and the 1965 – as a laboratory that anticipated some of the tensions and trends followed by the worldwide Catholicism after the end of the Second Vatican Council.

Settis, Bruno.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation deals with the complex evolution of theories and practices of industrial relations between the interwar years and postwar growth. “Fordism” is the catchword usually associated with relations between the corporation, labor and government in this period and, more generally, with the supposed social compact arising from the very structure of mass production and its supposed virtuous circle with mass consumption. In this wider sense, Fordism has often been coupled, sometimes overlapped, with Keynesian macroeconomics, government economic interventionism, and the welfare state. The dissertation attempts to disentangle and discuss this supposedly simple notion of “Fordism” by tracing its manifold history and international circulation. Therefore, it involves a wide discussion of the conflict between labor and management in the mass production industries, and a focus on three case studies: the history of Elton Mayo’s “human relations” doctrine, from its origins in Australia to its applications in Europe; the evolution of the surveillance system at Fiat factories in Turin, from the last years of the Fascist regime to the late 1960s; labor scholar Gino Giugni’s experience as a student at Madison, Wisconsin, and later as a translator of American theories of the labor movement and of industrial relations, in the 1950s and 1960s

Abstract:
This thesis reports the results of a study designed to investigate the influence of exposure to televised medical dramas on perceptions of medical miracles. Four hundred and eighty-one college students participated in a survey in which they responded to different questions about their medical drama viewership and their different beliefs with regard to medical miracles. Results found that heavy medical drama viewers perceived belief in medical miracles to be less normal than non-viewers. Similarly, heavy viewers perceived medical miracles to occur less often than non-viewers. Interestingly, heavy viewers perceived medical dramas to be less credible than non-viewers. In addition, this study found that personal experience with medical miracles affected responses across all three measured viewership levels. The study concludes that, when compared to no exposure to medical dramas, heavy exposure has the potential for creating a more realistic view of medical miracles. Future research should continue to study genre-specific cultivation effects with regard to health perceptions.

Mendoza, Waldo. "The Peruvian Miracle: Good luck or good policies?" Economía, 2014. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/117224.

Full text
Abstract:
The Peruvian economy has performed extraordinarily over the last 10 years. The 2012 per capita GDP is 66 percent above that of 2002, and more than double its 1992 level. In a long term perspective, the cumulative growth of GDP per capita recorded in the last 10 years has been the strongest since 1900. This is the «Peruvian miracle». This paper aims to find the determinants of the Peruvian miracle. In theory, countries’ macroeconomic performance can be determined by two factors: i) the «good (bad) luck effect» that relates to the international context, which may be favorable or unfavorable, and ii) the «good (bad) policies effects», associated with short-term macroeconomic policies or structural reforms, which are policies that alter the current development model. The hypothesis of this work is that the Peruvian miracle of the last 10 years has much to do with good luck, and, in part, with good short-term macroeconomic policies.

Tran, Cong, and Yuriy Seleznyov. "A study of Pond's Age Miracle Customer Perceived Value." Thesis, Mälardalen University, Mälardalen University, School of Business, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-4318.

Full text
Abstract:

Background

After a successful launch in early 2007 Pond’s Age Miracle, Unilever Vietnam’s anti-aging skincare product, is now experiencing falling sales and a declining market share having failed to complete its mission of counter-attacking its main competitor – P&G’s Olay Total Effect. This predicament poses a question of how Unilever Vietnam can improve market performance of this product.

Purpose

To determine Pond’s Age Miracle customer perceived value and propose recommendations on how to improve it.

Method

A combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches was pursued. In-depth interviews with consumers were used to discover relevant attributes of anti-aging skincare. A consumer survey was employed to measure relative importance and relative performance of the identified attributes – a basis for determining Pond’s customer perceived value.

Findings, Analysis and Conclusion

Customer perceived value of Pond’s Age Miracle was found to have a negative character on the entire market scale and across most of the listed consumer groups.

Recommendations

A re-launch of the upgraded version of Pond’s is suggested to maintain the current consumers and recruit the potential anti-aging skincare users.

Matisonn, Heidi. "Miracle or misery? : understanding democratic participation in South Africa." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2010. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/290/.

Full text
Abstract:
On 27 April 1994 the most hated flag in Africa was lowered, signifying the end of the Apartheid regime. As the world watched the transformation of South Africa taking place – without the bloodshed that the state‟s direst cynics had predicted – words like "miracle" and "inspirational" abounded. Since then, the world has continued to watch South Africa‟s transition to democracy and even those who were its greatest supporters have begun to ask questions about the quality and quantity of democratic reforms. The increasing centralisation and monopolisation of power by the African National Congress, declining rates of formal participation by citizens and considerable failures in service delivery are major factors contributing to the concerns about the long-term prospects for democracy in South Africa, especially given the record of democratic failure across the rest of the continent. While significant contributions have been made to the study of South African democracy – both theoretical and empirical – there are few, if any, that have sought to combine both these methodologies and hence the scholarship is not, in my view, paying the dividends it should. This research thus explores contemporary politics in South Africa, examining its assets and liabilities in order to provide a clearer picture of the state of democracy in the country. It does so by measuring practices in South Africa in terms of the role accorded to participation in three conceptions of democracy: liberal representative accounts, deliberative accounts and what I term the "categorical" account. In so doing the research will show that although concerns about democracy in South Africa are justified, if we shift our focus from the instrumental value of participation to its categorical one we may find a way to ensure that the miracle continues.

Full text
Abstract:
At the end of the Middle Ages, the miracle was at the crossroads of fundamental religious beliefs and practices : cult of the Virgin Mary and of the saints, devotion to images and relics, vows and pilgrimages. Since the Reformation has rejected the miracle as such and everything connected with it, it is often regarded as a crucial step in the « disenchantment of the world » which results in the progressive purification of Christianity of its magical elements. The analysis of miracle during the period from 1500 to 1620 in France shows that this was not the case. The theoretical comprehension of miracle remained practically unchanged through over the considered period. The same should be stated concerning the practices connected with the miracle. The relations that people had with supernatural beings whose assistance they hoped for were based on the principle of gift and counter-gift codified long time ago, which underwent no change during the sixteenth century. Even the protestants, supposed to have rejected the miracle and the beliefs and practices attached to it, shared to some extent traditional attitudes. On the theological level, a radical providentialism allowed to reintroduce the possibility of direct divine interventions in the material world. As for the simple believers, great number of them continued to rely on saints, vows and relics, which appeared to them as an efficient help against the vicissitudes of existence

How French have perceived the economic miracle of Italy after second world war, in spite of accumulated resentment between the two countries ? It's only at the end of fiftee's that tese difficulties disappeared realy. Why this italian take off from extreme end of fortee's ? And how its reasons were perceived by french leaders ? In the same direction we are looking for the moment from which these leaders have understood this remarkable development of Italy. We are looking for the inflluence of interne debates of our neighbour on the french leaders way of approaching french problems. The question of housebuilding is particularly revealing of this italian influence at the beginning of fiftee's. As such the study of three problems implying the two countries, is very important : the union customs at the end of fortee's, the italian emigration and the tunnel of Mont Blanc. But all these requires to stop our study to 1963-1964 who are strategics years in Italy, economic and politic speaking

This dissertation has as main objective to deal with the pilgrimages and the cult of the Apostle James the Greater in Santiago de Compostela, from the Liber Sancti Jacobi, a codex elaborated in the twelfth century, and which encloses in itself all the nuances of reverence for the disciple in the Galicia region. In order to do so, we are guided by theoretical methodological assumptions for the analysis of the representations in the present source, according to the aspects of the myth and the Social Imaginary, present in the quotidian of the century. From the revelation of the existence of a sepulcher made in the ninth century, attributed to the disciple who would have been according to the Holy Scriptures, one of the closest of the Messiah, a cult that according to tradition has been forgotten for centuries, would thus have resurfaced. Since then, a series of narratives and the itinerary towards the Galician city, were being written and perfected. At the apogee of the cult of relics in the twelfth century, the Compostela Cathedral under the prelate Diego Gelmírez, there was an extension to the elaboration of these documents aimed at legitimizing the presence of the relics of the apostle in "Hispania", among the most notable of these chronicles, is the Liber Sancti Jacobi or Codex Calixtinus. Based on the narratives present in the codex, information about the presence of James the Greater in the Iberian Peninsula was expanded. Thus, our research developed from the research on the writing and the origin of the tradition of the narratives reproduced in the codex. As well, we turn our attention to the relevance and influence of the pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome, primordial to the investigations that investigate the amplitude and importance of the trips and pilgrimages in Average Age. Finally, the attention is directed to the analyzes of the myth of St. James and his miracles narrated in the Liber Sancti Jacobi and their interferences, motivations and inspirations for the construction and promotion of the way of Santiago de Compostela.

A produção do arquiteto carioca Sergio Bernardes (1919/2002) é tão vasta quanto desconhecida.
The production of the Brazilian and native of Rio de Janeiro architect Sergio Bernardes is as vast as unknown. Assertive and questioner, since the beginning of his career, he presented himself against the conceptual, stylistic and projective formats. Graduated in 1948 at the Universidade do Brasil, he worked until 1990s in the large field of the project with abrupt change in the architectonical scale of the 1960s and 1970s. Starting from the experimentation of more restrict and defined programs, he interspersed a complex universe of the megastructures and headed prospective and visionary to the territory scale. By experimenting steel as structural source of architecture, he threw himself into the universe of the non euclidianas geometries; he hung pavilions as bridges, houses as cable cars; tested light materials in the construction, and increased the industrial production through the development of elements for series manufacturing. Through an ambitious way of multidisciplined associations of knowledge, laboratorial research and experimental investigation of the construction site, he pursued a type of systemic idealism, based on a technological virtuousism. From architect to a social inventor , he reassured his belief in the modern individual, in the power of reason, in the potency of the project and in a preventive action of future. In the Brazilian architectonical context of the 1960s and 70s, he truly believed in the renovation of his architecture, taking advantage of the good relationship he had with the Military, especially, during a period of economical force (concentration of incomes) and the progressive development of the country during the Dictatorship era, the Brazilian Miracle (1968/73). A moment in which, the architect takes over the protagonism of the just built, Federal Capital, Brasilia. This research is about four of the Sergio Bernardes emblematic projects for Brasilia– Instituto Brasileiro do Café – IBC (1968/71); Ministério da Marinha – MM (1970/73); Escola Superior de Guerra (1970/74); Monumento ao Pavilhão Nacional (1972) – all destined to the military government and finished within the period of time called the miracle , in order to understand how much of a possibility without precedents they meant for his architecture, and at the same time, how much of this opened the way to a curse that haunts his work since then.

Abstract:
Masters of Art
study analyses the concept of al-Karāmah al-Sūfīyah (the Sufi Saintly Miracle) in both its religious and literary dimensions. The researcher will shed more light on this genre of narrative literary phenomena by developing its definition and placing it in the social and historical context of the Sufi thought as a whole. Many communities in the Islamic world embrace and practice the Sufi doctrine and also believe in the Ṣūfī Sheikhs’ saintly miracles and its paranormal aspects, which they also consider to be parallel in its sacredness to the miracles of the Prophets. Furthermore, in this study the researcher will not only focus on the religious significance of the saintly miracle but also on their literary approach and aesthetic dimensions. In fact many of the contemporary Arab scholars and Litterateurs categorize this narrative discourse to fall under the cloak of al-Adab al-‘ajāibī (miraculous literature) due to the nature of its narrative style and structure from which it achieves its goals, such as: Myth – Legend – Superstition – Storytelling, etc. The study will be mainly qualitative. It is a content analysis study in the sense that the researcher will analyse the stylistic, formal and rhetorical techniques of the saintly miracles’ discourse with specific reference to extracts taken from al- Sheikh al-Hassan al- Shadili and al-Sheikh Abdelssalam Bin Machich. The study will use an eclectic theoretical and conceptual framework which combines the historical approach with the reception theory.

Millou, Yves. Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMR008/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The miraculous can be understood as a category of event, either profane or religious. Only the latter, in its Christian perspective, will be dealt with in this present work. But in order for this believer’s point of view to mean anything to the impartial observer, the choice has been made to examine the reactions of surprise and wonder felt by the beneficiaries of these unusual events. Could these reactions inform us about what supposedly takes place in the miraculous? The phenomenological methodology which has been implemented in order to answer this question relies on two corpuses: one consists in a set of New Testament texts, in which the reactions of surprise and wonder which accompany the miracles are evaluated to understand how they operate in the mechanism of revelation at work in those texts; the other is composed of narratives told by beneficiaries of miracles who have been interviewed within the frame of the micro-phenomenological 1st person method. Once they have been transcribed and analyzed for their emotional content, these narratives make available experiential resources which exemplify how the miraculous is lived by the beneficiaries, how it surprised and overwhelmed them. The phenomenology of surprise thus brought forward and confronted to that which can be drawn from Scripture narratives enables, first, to understand better how affects of surprise and wonder operate during so-called miraculous irruptive events, and how their materiality, can account for such an experience. But the work also aims at characterizing surprise and wonder as full-fledged phenomenological tools usable for the understanding of the human reality confronted to what exceeds it

Plastic trash is an increasingly significant source of pollution in the world's oceans. In some remote ocean regions, it is aggregating by the ton. This thesis investigates plastic trash as an emerging marine contaminant, with a specific focus on: the history of plastic trash in the ocean; areas of aggregation; potential sources; remediation efforts; behavior of the material in terms of degradation in the marine environment; impacts to sea life and marine ecosystems; and scientific research, both ongoing and planned, that will attempt to determine further potential impacts to marine ecosystems and human health. The second part of this inquiry provides a brief explanation of what plastics are, the history of plastic polymer development and the significance of the material's incredible contributions to society. It explores briefly the growing social backlash against plastic as a result of the publicized impacts of plastic ocean trash, and concludes with an argument, which states that the problem of plastic marine pollution is not due to the nature of the material itself, but rather lies in the ways we have chosen to use it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to examine how liberalization and the introduction of pro-poor policies can be successful in post-conflict countries using the Rwanda coffee market as a case study. My research supports the notion that economic development, political stability and peace can be a result of liberalization when policies that are pro-poor and focus on the largest sector of the population are created. The study examines why and how Rwanda chose to liberalize their economy in the way they did by focusing on the intentions of the actors and the effects their actions have had on the coffee market and country as a whole. The findings suggest that Rwanda’s coffee market liberalization has been successful and has contributed to stability and economic development in Rwanda. The conclusion indicates that pro-poor liberalization policies with the assistance from a variety of actors and institutions can lead developing countries on the path to development in ways the international community has not seen before.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the centrality of monastic sources to debates about social and political transformation in post-Carolingian Europe, few studies have approached the political and economic status of monasteries and their saints' cults in this context, to which this thesis offers a comparative approach. Hagiography provides an interesting point of analysis with respect to the proposition of mutation féodale, and more importantly to that of the mutation documentaire and its relation to monastic 'reform', which Part I discusses. Parts II and III consider Bobbio and Conques, and their miracula (dedicated to San Colombano and Sainte Foy) within their respective socio-political environments, since the best of the recent scholarship concerning the millennial period has emphasized the specificity of regional experience. At Bobbio the closeness of the king physically and some continuity in royal practices between the tenth and eleventh centuries shaped monastic experience. It directed and sometimes restricted monastic discourse, which maintained an older tradition of general service to the kingdom, although innovations in relic usage helped monastic negotiations with the sovereign. At Conques, the waning of royal control created space for literary and cultic advances that served to bolster the monastery's position within local power structures. In this landscape older forms of public authority were purposefully minimized and hierarchy and landownership were negotiated between aristocrats, including Sainte Foy at the head of Conques. Whilst the categories of the 'feudal transformation' debate can offer a useful framework for the analysis of two very different monasteries and their local societies, the comparison demonstrates that placing monasteries at the centre of our debate is crucial to understanding the documents they produce, and therefore questions the potential that these have to shed light on wider societal change. Concerns over land and autonomy were central to both institutions, although these operated on different conceptual planes, because of different bases of landed patrimony dating back much further than the tenth century. Each monastery negotiated hierarchy and clientele through their miracula and according to local socio-political rules. Therefore, whilst related documentary and cultic transformations were inseparable from socio-political pressures, these were not necessarily pressures simply reacting to mutation féodale, but were formative processes in the direction and shape of social change.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis considers how religious literature represented sickness and disability in Anglo- Saxon and post-Conquest England. Based on Gospel accounts of Jesus's healings, narratives of miracle-cures were highly valued within medieval Christian culture. By analysing a selection of miracle-cure narratives from the main period of miracle writing in England, from the age of Bede to the late twelfth century, this project considers the social significance of such stories. All miracle-cures followed the pattern of a spiritual triumph over the material world, but this thesis focuses on how hagiographers represented human experiences of sickness and disabilities. The first two chapters of this thesis address the conceptual structure of the project. The first explains the two areas of scholarly theory that underpin this thesis. These are the use of narrative sources for historical study; and sociological conceptualisations of bodily difference. The second chapter orientates the case-studies selected for this project in their context. Miracle-cures were recounted in relation to other aspects of the culture of medieval England, most importantly the theology of sainthood and of sin. The remaining three chapters of the thesis provide detailed thematic analysis of selected miracle-cure narratives. The third chapter asks how the spiritual experience of bodily difference was understood. The next chapter considers the physical understandings of a body that was affected by either sickness or disability, and the links between miracle-cure narratives and contemporary medical theory. The fifth and final chapter addresses the representation of social aspects of sickness and disability in these texts, in particular the moralising rhetoric of such texts in favour of community support. This thesis concludes with a discussion of how modern Disability Studies and scholarship on medieval culture benefit from interaction with one another.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation revisits Brazil's experience with multiple exchange rates (MERs) between 1953 and 1961. Exchange controls such as MERs were common across the world during the early days of the Bretton Woods arrangement, despite the resistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which assumed they caused instability and balance of payments crises. Latin America’s use of exchange controls was widespread, with different exchange rates also adopted as instruments to stimulate import substitution industrialization (ISI). Brazil’s MER system was, however, a unique experiment, with all the country’s imports included in a regime of auctions of foreign exchange, resulting in a controlled depreciation process with different sectoral exchange rates. The experience had two phases, the first of which diverged from other cases in the region in lasting much longer, maintaining stable macroeconomic conditions, and avoiding IMF interventions. The second phase resulted in a decline of the system's macroeconomic effectiveness and its eventual collapse in 1961. This research investigates the peak and decline of Brazil’s MER systems by analyzing a new quantitative dataset that is further complemented by qualitative sources. The main thesis is that Brazil’s MER regime was a ‘successful’ experience during its first phase, with a singular design that supported the stabilization of macroeconomic conditions. Officials were ‘guiding the invisible hand’ of the market to help balance macroeconomic variables. The dissertation also shows that the MER system was not a protectionist instrument to stimulate import substitution in advanced sectors and did not generate distortions to sectoral industrial growth. It was, however, transformed during its second phase into a mechanism to subsidize private sector imports and increase the government’s direct participation in the industrial effort, which was an industrial deepening process with costly macroeconomic consequences.
