Artificial Intelligence has been a concept that has infatuated humankind for millennia. Since antiquity, humans have been obsessed with the idea of creating a perfect artificial human for different aims such as companionship or domestic help, and ancient cultures have devoted foundational texts to the artificial human. This literary occupation gradually evolved into proto-fantasy or proto-Science Fiction literature in the early middle ages. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that Mary Shelley’s influential work Frankenstein (1818) brought together different aspects of creating an artificial human discussed within a broader social and psychological understanding. With the advent of audiovisual media in the 20th century, such representations of artificially created humanoids or other creations with some degree of consciousness have populated both the silver screen and television. This thesis focuses on the societal connections between such representations of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on the TV show Black Mirror (Charlie Brooker, 2011) as well as the films Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2014) and Her (Spike Jonze, 2014) by analyzing the Artificial Intelligence - human relationships from a variety of different perspectives and paradigms. The audiovisual analyses of the selected works are then followed by an examination of how such recent technological developments are taking place in our current society. These texts under examination exhort us to beware the potential dangers of AI technology, which require implementation of strict regulations around the Artificial Intelligence framework in order to alleviate human anxieties about technology. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, technology, technology and society, Science Fiction, dystopia, film studies, society.

Full textHow do history classes reflect the ways in which teachers and students in Cape Town schools are dealing with their nation in transition? I ask through this research. To address this question, I developed a methodology based on ethnographic methods in the belief that I could gain a unique perspective by being in the history classrooms and in schools themselves for sustained periods of time. I spent three weeks in each of four schools with different histories: Peninsula High, Transkei High, Plain High, and Central High. I have presented my representations of these schools each as a separate case study. Through extracts from interviews with teachers and students, moments of classroom lessons and discussions, and descriptions of informal interactions in various school settings, I have constructed narratives to explore what is going on in schools in a time of transition. I have used the textual devises of narrative and rhetoric to highlight the situations of teachers and students in schools and to contextualise and to problematise the different ways in which they were dealing with an education system in transition. I trace the common threads that ran through history teaching in each school and juxtapose the thoughts and actions of teachers and students. In so doing, I have attempted to create conversations between teachers and students from different schools. These conversations seek to mirror first how teachers and students were dealing with education and history teaching in a time of transition, not only in isolation, but also collectively; and, secondly, to examine what was working, what wasn't, and why. It is an endeavour to provide an always unfinished, yet thought-provoking, discourse about where education and history teaching might go from here.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to present an approach for good practice with regards to using cost benefit analysis (CBA) as a value-adding activity in the information security investment process for large enterprises. The approach is supported by empirical data.
From a MIO model perspective, this report is focused on the phase of strategic choices regarding organization, i.e. trying to find optimal investments for efficient operations. To assess, improve and monitor the operational effectiveness and management’s internal control environment is essential in today’s business execution. Executive management and boards are increasingly looking for an information security governance framework that encompasses information technology and information security: a single framework through which all information assets and activities within the organisation can be governed, to provide the optimum capability for meeting the organisation’s objectives, in terms of functionality and security.
The investment decision is one of the most visible and controversial key decisions in an enterprise. Some projects are approved, others are bounced, and the rest enter the organisational equivalent of suspended animation with the dreaded request from the decision makers to “redo the business case” or “provide more information.”
The concept of cost benefit analyses of information security helps management to make decisions on which initiatives to fund with how much, as there needs to be an approach for measuring and comparing different alternatives and how they meet business objectives of the enterprise. Non-financial metrics are identified using different approaches: governance effectiveness, risk analysis, business case analysis or game theory. The financial performance metrics are driven by the main value disciplines of an enterprise. These lead to the use of formulas enabling the measurement of asset utilisation, profit or growth: ROI (ROIC), NPV, IRR (MIRR), FCF, DCF, Payback Period, TCO, TBO, EVA, and ROSI.
The author shows research in the field of good corporate governance and the investment approval process, as well as case studies from two multinational enterprises. The case from Motorola demonstrates how IT governance principles are equally applicable to information security governance, while the case from Ericsson demonstrates how an information security investment decision can be supported by performing a cost benefit analysis using traditional marketing approaches of business case analysis (BCA) and standard financial calculations.
The suggested good practice presented in this thesis is summarised in four steps:
1. Understand main rationale for the security investment
2. Identify stakeholders and strategic goals
3. Perform Cost Benefit Analysis (non-financial and financial performance metrics)
4. Validate that the results are relevant to stakeholders and strategic goals

The rapid rise of social network sites (SNSs) changes the distance between people and the way of life. SNSs have become the most popular platform in which Internet users interact with each other. Therefore, SNSs have drawn tremendous amount of attention from both academic and businesses. This study applied Social Cognitive Theory as the fundamental theory to explore the SNSs’ influence on its users’ positive and negative perspectives in which subsequently influence their behaviors. The SNSs users were divided into three groups—“moderate,” “fanatic,” and “apathetic.” The results showed that, among all groups, connecting with old friends influences SNSs users’ interactions. SNSs users’ interactions significantly affect individuals’ positive perspectives but not the negative ones. SNSs users’ perspectives positively correlate with their behaviors. However, SNSs users’ behaviors significantly differ from one group to another. Flow experience, enjoyment and angry have mediating effect between SNSs users’ interactions and their behaviors.

In recent years, the leisure lifestyle has become increasingly popular; the leisure expenditure on the part of the public has increased significantly, and the trend of watching performing arts also continues to rise year by year. Currently, performing arts groups rely mainly on the sale of tickets as their source of revenue to sustain their operation. Hence, audience satisfaction and methods of attracting new potential audiences have become very important topics of study. Another challenging question faced by these groups is whether government policies value the promotion of performing arts. Taiwan’s theatrical groups are diversified and include magic shows; they have become very popular in recent years. Due to their promotion through television programs in recent years, Taiwan’s magic show business has gradually flourished. Many magic lovers began to show off their skills on television, whereby numerous magic performance artists and groups have thus gained popularity. However, a common factor among magic and other performing arts is that, one has to personally watch it in order to experience the overwhelming power. This study focused on the business characteristics, management and operational issues of the magical theatre group, “The Mirror Theatre”. The study also analyzed the marketing issues faced by the performing arts group and proposed solutions; in addition, the directions required to expand its customer base were also investigated. Through an in-depth understanding of the problems faced by the magical theatre group the study aimed to propose an appropriate marketing strategy. The study found that: 1. Developing new potential audiences is essential in order to increase the theatre group’s popularity and profit. 2. The theatre group should make use of the Internet to explain its characteristics and focus in order to better reach out to its viewers and enhance their interest in the performances. 3. In combination with street performances and impromptu performances, the activities and reputation of the theatre group can reach more people. 4. In the future, theatre operators should observe the trend of the audience groups and society, and selectively increase their performances and services in order to increase profit and a knowledgeable population. Henri Lefebvre’s Space Theory opposes simply treating space as the container to store materials. He believes that there are other elements existing in the space that affects relationships between each component. This article tries to analyze new media and how theatre space changes and its ups and downs after the introduction of the new media using Henri Lefebvre’s Conceptual Triad theory in his work The Production of Space. McLuhan Marshall thinks that all media is the extension of human race. And theater is the vehicle to broadcast that information and actors, space, and all other elements become the extension of the information in the eye of audience other than just illusions. The article uses Spatial Practice, Representations of Space, and Spaces of Representation to demonstrate the complex relationships among materials, spiritual, and society. The first part is to analyze and compare new media. The second part is using Black Mirror to investigate and find evidence for existence of space. The third part is to understand and summarize the possibilities of new media extension through interviewing media workers and cross examinations. This three- part then in the space theory Lefebvre order to discuss the development of " Black Mirror " .The unlimited expansion and extension is inevitable in today’s world where the media is constantly changing.

A qualified product whose critical quality should be met by customers’ requests. The critical quality involves many items. In usual, the process capability index is a useful tool for evaluating the product’s quality. But the past researches aimed to the single characteristic quality. This research considers the advantage of Cpm that could measure processes’ loss to propose a new index which could evaluate multiple characteristics. In advance, we use the concept of six sigma to establish the table of level for quality control personnel used easily. Then the MPCAC (Multiple characteristics process capability analysis chart) is constructed for quickly finding out the relationship between precision and accuracy. Eventually, a case for assembly process of is used to illustrate the DMAIC process of six sigma with . The is used to measure the driving mirrors and MPCAC can analyze qualities characteristics’ precision and accuracy. Then the cause and effect diagram could find out the the most important factor which should be improved. Finally, the control chart with process precision and accuracy is used to monitor the quality after the improveing. The proposed method can quickly evaluate the product with multiple characteristics and indicate directions for improving to the related manufacturer.

Due to time and space constraints, it is likely for subtitle translators to adopt simplification strategies. This study chooses season one of the anthology series Black Mirror as the research material. Six simplification strategies proposed by Blum and Levenston (1978), namely superordinate terms, approximation, synonymy, transfer, circumlocution, and paraphrase, are applied to draw a comparison between the official version Netflix and the fansubbed version YYeTs and to explore how the two versions utilize simplification strategies. The study shows that the fansubbed version tends to adopt simplification strategies more frequently than the official version. However, the official version is generally more concise when simplification strategies are applied to the subtitles. On the contrary, the fansubbed version is not necessarily more concise when simplification strategies are applied to the subtitles. The underlying reason may be the simplification strategies that translators choose and the expressions that translators choose to translate. In sum, six simplification strategies proposed by Blum and Levenston (1978) are effective in terms of making subtitles more concise; however, the extent to which simplification strategies successfully applies to subtitles depends on how translators render the source texts.

Driven by the trend of globalization, information and communication technology (ICT) has become essential infrastructure for countries to develop. ICT always played an important role in the evolution of the government, the innovation of industry, and even people’s lives. With the advantage of the electronic industry, the significant resources from the government and the civil, ICT has been the key developed and successful industry in Taiwan. Along with the close cooperation of industry, government, academia, and research, the forward-looking technology has broken through. Because of the manufacturing side, the supply side, and extension to the usual server ICT applications are so diverse that always create more values with various industries. Technology commercialization is often seen as a process of value creation which completed only by one company or a unit. In the technology commercialization process, each stage needs some capacities to do some work and different due to different industrial cooperation. The main purpose of this research of ICT was developed by Chung- Shan Institute of Science and Technology (CSIST), applies in bathroom equipment. It is the case of Wireless Mirror Display and Digital-Controlled Shower System. According to Jolly’s technology commercialization process be a major framework for recording the practice process of the R&D side of CSIST, FullWell etc. ,and the market side of Wellpoint Group. Then I will analyze the relationship of the abilities and their practices between alliance units and each stage. I expect that can supply suggestions and increase the rate of success for technology commercialization.

Optical Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have recently emerged as a powerful means of implementing such functions in compact and low-cost form, owing to the unique capability of this technology to integrate optical, mechanical, and electrical components on a single wafer. Various optical MEMS components, such as laser printer, display, and optical cross connects, have been demonstrated. However, how to used planar fabrication for commercialized optical MEMS device is one of key challenges. This work integrated two-poly MUMP’s process, multi-depth DRIE etching and bulk micromachining to accomplish superior poly-Si micro-optical systems. The thickness and depth-difference of the devices was significantly increased using the trench-refilled structure. In addition, the space between the devices and the substrate was remarkably increased to ~100µm by bulk silicon etching. Moreover, the self-aligned vertical comb actuators were available through the multi-depth DRIE etching for high performance out-pf-plane actuator. In applications, he scanning mirrors driven by self-aligned vertical comb actuator were demonstrated. These multi-depth optical devices can further integrate with the MUMP’s devices to establish a more powerful MOEMS platform.

Introduction: Stroke is an important health issue worldwide. Patients with stroke commonly have unilateral upper-limb (UL) motor impairments which result in long-term dependence of patients. Action observation therapy (AOT) is a new rehabilitation approach based on the mechanism of mirror neuron system (MNS). During AOT, patients were asked to observe the actions performed by another healthy person in the videos and imitate the actions intentionally. Mirror therapy (MT) is another recent prominent rehabilitation intervention. MT required patients to look at the reflection of the unaffected hand in the mirror and imagine it as the affected one, which is known as mirror visual feedback. Both AOT and MT apply different patterns of visual feedback but involve motor observation and imagery and share some similar neural bases of MNS. However, their effectiveness in stroke rehabilitation is equivocal. Therefore, there were two purposes of this study. The first study aim was to investigate and compare treatment effects between AOT and MT on UL motor function measured by clinical scales in patients with subacute stroke. The second aim was to examine neural mechanisms between action observation related task and mirror related task by using the Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Methods: Eleven participants were recruited in this study to receive AOT or MT intervention for 60 minutes per day, 5days per week for 3 weeks. The clinical outcomes were selected based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Body functions level was assessed by the upper-limb subscale of Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA-UL), Box and Block Test (BBT) and revised Nottingham Sensory Assessment (rNSA). The Activity and Participation levels were assessed by the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Motor Activity Log (MAL) and physical function domains of Stroke Impact Scale (SIS). Mann-Whitney U test was applied to evaluate the treatment effects between the 2 groups. Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test was applied to examine within-group changes. In the MEG experiment, four participants were recruited to execute 6 conditions in action observation related task and mirror related task. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to examine the differences on the beta oscillation activity with different conditions of the 2 tasks. Mann-Whitney U test was used for the post hoc analysis. Results: There were 6 participants randomly assigned to the AOT group and 5 participants assigned to the MT group. The AOT group significant improved on the total score (p = .05) and distal part score (p = .04) of the FMA-UL and BBT (p = .05). Besides, the AOT also improved on the WMFT-Time (p = .03), the total score (p = .03) and motor subscale (p = .03) of FIM, MAL-AOU (p = .03), MAL-QOM (p = .03), and hand function subscale (p = .04) and physical domains (p = .05) of the SIS. MT could significantly enhance on the WMFT-FAS (p = .04), the total score (p = .04) and motor subscale (p = .04) of FIM, MAL-AOU (p = .04), MAL-QOM (p = .04), and hand function subscale (p = .04) of the SIS. In addition, the results of MEG recordings showed significant differences in different conditions of action observation related task (p = .03). The post hoc analysis showed that the beta oscillation activities of “combined video and action” (p = .03) and “action only” (p = .03) conditions had significant decline compared to the “resting” condition. The beta oscillation activity of “combined video and action” condition decreased more compared with the activity of “action only” and “video only” conditions, although no statistically significant differences were found between these conditions. The comparison of beta oscillation activity among in the conditions of mirror related task also showed significant difference (p = .04). In the comparison between “mirror” condition and “no mirror” condition, there was no significant difference (p = .69). Further, no significant difference of beta oscillation activity was found in “combined video and action” condition compared with “mirror” condition (p = .49). Conclusion: Both AOT and MT improved UL motor function and daily function in patients with subacute stroke. AOT have more improvement on UL motor function than MT. The findings of MEG suggested that both action observation and mirror conditions can facilitate activation of primary motor cortex in patients with subacute stroke. Further studies to enroll more participants and administer a follow-up assessment are suggested.

Background and objectives: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation for changing the damaged cortical excitability of stroke patients. It is a promising therapeutic technique in neurorehabilitation. Mirror therapy (MT) has been effective for improving sensorimotor functions of the upper extremity in stroke rehabilitation. To verify whether tDCS may be combined with MT for augmented treatment effects, this study was designed to investigate the effects of hybridizing tDCS with MT in patients with stoke. Methods: A randomized, double-blinded and sham-controlled study was conducted. Ten participants with chronic stroke were randomly assigned to receive tDCS combined sequentially with MT, or sham-tDCS combined with MT. All participants in the two groups received the intervention for 90-min five times a week for 4 weeks. Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), revised Nottingham Sensory Assessment (RNSA), and Motor Activity Log (MAL) were administrated as primary outcomes, moreover; Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Grip and Pinch Strength, kinematic assessment and actigraphy were secondary outcomes at pre- and post-treatment. Moreover, tDCS adverse effects questionnaire was applied in the study for monitoring the adverse effects. Results: For primary outcomes, tDCS + MT group had significant changes and large effect on the distal subscale of FMA (P = .048, r = .577); and the quality of movement subscale (P = .028, r = .596) and the amount of use subscale of MAL (P = .048, r = .562) for between-group comparisons. Sham-tDCS + MT group compared to another group were statistically different on the proximal subscale of FMA (P = .016, r = .681). Although there were few statically significant findings on secondary outcomes in both groups, MT+ tDCS group compared to Sham-tDCS + MT group may have trends of greater changes on lateral pinch strength, angular change of kinematic assessment; and caloric consumption and activity counts for actigraphy. Sham-tDCS + MT group showed a superior trend in tactile sensation and sterognosis of RNSA, the proximal subscale of MAS, and the time subscale of WMFT. Conclusion: The research supports the positive effects of tDCS combined with MT on motor and daily functions after stroke. With the case series designed in the study, the conclusion should be carefully inferred. Further studies with more sample size or long-term follow-up are needed to examine the present findings.

With the popularity of mobile devices and mobile Internet, consumers use trivial time to watch movies on the Net and sharing them through community websites. Therefore, the prevalence of micro-film is resulted. This study explores the effects of micro-film story marketing from the perspective of Heuristic theory and wants to know if micro-film storis would evoke customers’ empathy and emotion reaction, thereby affect the perception of their brand image and purchase intention. This survey were limited for Taiwan's Internet users, and had simultaneously Internet and paper questionnaire respondents . Removing invalid samples, the total recovery was 375 copies. This study took a main view of consumers’ perception and the results showed that the story which has stronger narrative and close to the self-relevant of customerst can trigger emotional responses of consumers and enhance the brand image and stimulate buying interest.
