Two significant rain events of greater than 100 mm 24 h-1 occurred over Japan in direct association with tropical moisture transport from Typhoon (TY) Roke in September 2011. The first event occurred over Misawa Air Base, Japan during 1719 September 2011. Based on analysis of satellite imagery and numerical simulations, the Misawa rain event is classified as a predecessor rain event (PRE). A PRE is defined as a region of heavy rainfall that occurs thousands of kilometers poleward of a tropical cyclone (TC).
